What is the car skirt?

The car skirt is a panel component installed under the doors on both sides of the vehicle and connecting the front and rear wheel arches. It belongs to the aerodynamic kit and its main function is to reduce the airflow entering the vehicle bottom to lower the resistance and enhance the stability at high speeds. It also has the functions of aesthetics and anti-scuff protection.
Location: at the bottom of the left and right doors, connecting the front wheel arch to the rear wheel arch.
Core function: to guide the lateral airflow, reduce the turbulence at the bottom of the vehicle, lower the high-speed lift force, and enhance driving stability.
Additional function: to beautify the side lines and prevent splashing of mud and sand from scratching the threshold paint.
Common materials: originally, it is mostly made of ABS engineering plastic (lightweight, corrosion-resistant, impact-resistant), and for modification, carbon fiber or fiberglass can be selected.
Classification: it is part of the car exterior body wrap kit (often used in combination with the front lip and rear spoiler).
The car skirt is not just for decoration. A reasonable design can improve the handling safety by optimizing the airflow distribution during high-speed driving. If only for decorative installation without aerodynamic matching, the effect will be limited and even increase the wind resistance.
The main functions of the car skirt include optimizing aerodynamics, protecting the lower edge of the vehicle body and enhancing its appearance. It is installed under the doors and is an important part of the body aerodynamic kit, combining functionality and practicality.
When driving, it can reduce the airflow entering the bottom of the vehicle, creating a turbulent effect to lower the air resistance. At high speeds, it can increase the pressure under the chassis, prevent the vehicle from drifting, and make the handling more stable. Some performance models use the front and rear spoilers in combination, further optimizing the airflow and enhancing driving stability.
It can prevent side scratches. As a protruding structure at the bottom of the doors, it can contact obstacles in narrow parking spaces or sections. The repair of the car skirt's concavity requires first determining the material (plastic/metal integrated/aluminum alloy) and whether the paint surface is damaged. For minor non-destructive concavities, the preferred method is non-destructive concavity repair (PDR), which retains the original factory paint. For cracks/missing parts, small cracks can be repaired with plastic welding, and for large-scale fragmentation or stressed points, it is recommended to directly replace the assembly (the cost is usually lower than repair).
For metal car skirts (integrated with the vehicle body, with original factory paint), if the primer is not damaged (only concave), the preferred method is non-destructive concavity repair (PDR), which restores the original electroplating layer and rust resistance, avoiding subsequent rusting and depreciation of the used car.
If the primer is damaged (exposed iron/rusting), it must be done with metal spraying. The process is: sanding and rust removal → stretching and shaping → sanding putty → spraying epoxy primer → color paint and clear coat → it is necessary to spray particle glue (anti-stone impact coating) to prevent the tire from throwing stones and puncturing the rust.
For severe folds/edge fractures, non-destructive repair is difficult to restore, and it is recommended to cut and weld new corner materials or replace the entire assembly.
For aluminum car skirts, minor concavities can be repaired with special tools; if severely deformed or cracked, it is usually impossible to repair perfectly, and it is recommended to directly replace it. Welding is extremely difficult and prone to cracking.
Key precautions: Do not blindly perform metalwork: If the paint layer is intact, traditional sanding and painting will damage the original factory anti-corrosion layer, causing internal rusting from the inside out of the side skirt, and reducing the vehicle's residual value.
Do not neglect the particle coating: After painting the metal side skirt, the bottom's granular anti-crash coating must be restored; otherwise, the ordinary paint surface is very likely to be damaged and rusted by sand and stones.
Cost assessment: If the repair cost exceeds 40%-50% of the original price of the parts, or if the structural reinforcement beam is deformed, it is safer and more economical to directly replace it; for accident vehicle repairs, it is necessary to check if the internal anti-collision beam is damaged.
DIY limitations: The hot water method and suction cups are only applicable to plastic parts or very shallow metal dents; for metal parts, improper operation can easily cause secondary stretching and hardening, and it is recommended to have a professional technician assess it.

Inspect the material: Plastic texture and no paint layer → try hot water/suction cup; metal paint layer → check if the base paint is exposed.
Examine the paint layer: No damage → find a PDR scratch-free repair shop; with damage/surface rust → find a professional body shop (confirm the particle coating process).
Check the structure: High impact force → disassemble and inspect the internal reinforcement beam, and if necessary, correct or replace the beam.
Calculate: Compare the "scratch-free repair cost", "body painting cost" and "replacement part cost", and decide based on the vehicle's age.
