What is the function of the interior components of the car rearview mirror?

Among all the safety features of a car, the interior components of the rearview mirror is one of the most underestimated core components by car owners. It is not merely a simple reflective mirror on the front side of the windshield, but a multifunctional safety unit integrating optics, circuits, and mechanical structures. It directly determines the driver's control ability over the rearward view of the vehicle. Many daily driving maneuvers such as lane changes and hazard avoidance heavily rely on this seemingly insignificant interior component. Many car owners do not realize the significant impact of this component on driving safety until problems like loose mirror lenses or ineffective anti-glare features arise.
The core fundamental function of the interior components of the rearview mirror is to provide the driver with unobstructed rearward view. Unlike the convex external rearview mirrors on the sides of the car, the interior rearview mirror adopts a low-distortion flat mirror design, allowing the driver to accurately determine the true distance of the vehicles behind without turning their head or deviating from the forward driving line of sight. Especially when preparing to change lanes and overtake at high speeds, the external rearview mirrors often have blind spots, while the internal rearview mirror can fully observe the entire lane of vehicles behind, confirming the speed and distance of the following vehicle, significantly reducing the risk of collision during lane changes. When following closely in congested urban road sections, encountering an emergency brake from the vehicle in front, the driver can synchronously observe the movements of the following vehicle through the internal rearview mirror, predict the braking state of the following vehicle in advance, and promptly adjust their own braking force, effectively avoiding the risk of rear-end collision. In addition, it also enables the driver to observe the state of children in the rear seat easily, without having to turn around to confirm the safety of the rear passengers, which is particularly practical when traveling with children.
Today's mainstream car models' interior components of the rearview mirror are no longer just a simple reflective mirror. They integrate a large number of practical additional functions. The manual anti-glare version of the rearview mirror uses a bottom lever to switch the mirror surface reflection angle. When strong light from the rear vehicle shines directly at night, it can reflect the dazzling far light to the driver's line of sight outside, avoiding sudden glare-induced operational errors. The more advanced automatic anti-glare version integrates a light-sensitive sensor and an EC color-changing layer inside the mirror. When detecting strong light from the rear, it will automatically adjust the transparency of the mirror, reducing the intensity of reflected light within a few seconds, without requiring manual operation by the driver. Many mid-to-high-end car models' interior components of the rearview mirror also integrate features such as a car-mounted video recorder camera, a car-mounted Bluetooth microphone, and a road passage sensing module, becoming a key hub connecting the interior electronic systems and driving safety.
During long-term use, the faults of the interior components of the rearview mirror are mostly gradual and easily overlooked by car owners as minor issues. The most common basic fault is a loose fixed ball joint. The installation base of the rearview mirror is fixed to the windshield through a spherical joint. After long-term use, the plastic at the joint area will wear out, and when the vehicle passes over bumpy roads, the mirror lens will shake and shift, causing the originally adjusted rearward view to completely deviate. Many car owners need to repeatedly raise their hands to adjust to clearly see the rear road conditions, seriously distracting their driving attention. These faults are mostly caused by frequent bending of the rearview mirror or plastic aging and lubricant loss due to long-term summer exposure, and some old models even have the situation where the rearview mirror directly falls off the windshield.
The second type of frequent faults is the failure of the anti-glare function. The faults of the manual anti-glare rearview mirror are mostly due to the wear of the internal prism's positioning and wear of the bottom lever. When moving the bottom lever, the reflection angle cannot be switched, and when the strong light from the rear vehicle shines at night, it completely fails to weaken the light. The faults of the automatic anti-glare version are more complex. If the photosensitive sensor is covered by dust, the internal circuit wiring is loose, or the EC color-changing layer ages and fails, the lens will not be able to darken properly. Many car owners will find that after enabling the anti-glare function, the lens either shows no reaction at all or remains in a dark state. When observing the rear view during the day, the picture becomes dim and blurry, which actually affects normal observation of the road conditions.
In addition, the aging of the lens and the detachment of the base of the rearview mirror interior components are also common problems. The mirror surface exposed to direct sunlight will undergo oxidation of the coating, resulting in light spots and unclear reflections in the picture. Some rearview mirrors with integrated electronic functions may also experience internal circuit short circuits, causing the integrated parking recorders and sensing modules to frequently crash and even have abnormal power consumption problems. During daily use, car owners only need to clean the lens and sensor surfaces with a soft cloth regularly, avoid frequently and forcefully twisting the rearview mirror, and check the firmness of the base once every two years. This can significantly reduce the probability of faults and keep this "rear-view eye" for safe driving in the best working condition.
