The structure and working principle of the buffer block

Most people's understanding of the buffer block still remains at the level of "a rubber pad". In fact, the buffer blocks of modern passenger cars have already formed a very precise graded energy absorption structure. Currently, the buffer blocks of mainstream models basically all use micro-pore polyurethane materials instead of traditional rubber, with a weight only 50% of the rubber buffer block of the same volume. The compression deformation can reach 75% of its own height, which is 1.5 times that of ordinary rubber. Its internal structure is not a solid one, but is designed as a gradient density honeycomb layered form: the outermost layer of material is the softest. When encountering small bumps or slight bottoming out in daily life, only the outer layer is compressed, and most of the fine impact can be absorbed; the middle layer has a gradually increasing hardness, and when the vehicle quickly passes through deep pits or speeds over减速带, the middle layer begins to participate in collapse energy absorption, gradually dissipating the huge instantaneous impact force; the innermost core layer has the highest hardness, and only in the extreme working condition where the suspension is about to touch the bottom will it be fully compressed, ultimately preventing the metal parts from having a hard collision. This graded energy absorption design allows a palm-sized buffer block to cover all scenarios of protection from daily minor bumps to extreme impacts. From the installation position, the core layout position of the buffer block is at the top of the piston rod of the shock absorber, nested inside the dust cover, directly acting on the limit travel of the shock absorber; in addition, some hard off-road vehicles' frame and front axle between them, the connection points of urban SUV's sub-frame, even the lock positions of the tailgate and engine hood, will also be equipped with different specifications of buffer blocks, respectively undertaking the functions of chassis bottoming protection, vibration filtering, and collision closure.
The 9 core practical values of the buffer block
Many car owners do not know that the experience improvement brought by a well-maintained buffer block is far more than just "no noise when crossing bumps": It can directly solve the problem of the weak spring of the shock absorber after long-term use, restore the original factory-set suspension support performance, and make the originally "shaky" chassis become firm again; relying on the graded buffering principle, the originally hard impact is filtered into a gentle sinking sensation, significantly enhancing the driving luxury; the most crucial point is that it can directly protect the oil seal and piston rod of the shock absorber, avoiding the deformation and oil leakage of the oil seal caused by the hard collision under a large impact, and the actual measurement shows that it can extend the service life of the shock absorber by more than twice. In addition, it can reduce the chassis abnormal noise during driving, filter out the high-frequency and fine vibrations transmitted from the road surface; restore the original factory standard height of the vehicle body by 3-5 centimeters, improving the vehicle's passability; during cornering, it can suppress the excessive compression of the suspension, reduce the side roll, and improve the cornering stability; in emergency braking, it avoids the shock absorber touching the bottom directly, shortening the braking distance; during long-distance driving, it filters out the extra chassis tremors, significantly reducing the fatigue of the passengers; and the replacement and installation process does not require loosening the original factory suspension screws, the operation is simple and will not affect the four-wheel alignment parameters.
Common faults and hidden hazards of the buffer block
The fault of the buffer block is a typical "progressive hidden damage". Many car owners discover abnormal noise when they check, but the fault has actually been latent for tens of thousands of kilometers. The most common fault is aging and powdering. After using the vehicle for more than 6 years, the polyurethane material that works under high temperature, oil stains, and repeated compression in the working conditions will gradually lose elasticity, and the surface will first appear fine cracks, then gradually harden and crack, and eventually turn into powder scattered inside the dust cover. In many repair scenarios, when car owners replace the new shock absorber, they do not simultaneously replace the aged buffer block. During the high-speed reciprocating motion of the piston rod, these powders will be squeezed into the oil seal gap, and within just a few thousand kilometers, they will scratch the oil seal, causing the new shock absorber to directly leak oil and be scrapped. This kind of human-caused damage to the shock absorber accounts for nearly 30% of the early faults. The second most common failure is subsidence and displacement. The material density of the inferior auxiliary buffer blocks does not meet the standards. Within 1-2 years of use, local permanent subsidence occurs, and the buffer travel on both sides is inconsistent. When driving over bumpy roads, the vehicle will exhibit irregular deviation. Many car owners repeatedly perform four-wheel alignment adjustments but still cannot solve the problem. The root cause is the subsidence of the single-sided buffer block. Even more seriously, the buffer blocks may completely detach, losing the buffering medium. After this, every time the vehicle crosses a bump, the metal components of the shock absorber directly collide with each other. Minorly, it may cause the shock absorber base cover to deform and make abnormal noises. Severely, the impact will be directly transmitted to the ball joint of the steering arm and the welding points of the chassis, triggering a chain of chassis looseness faults. Another easily misjudged hidden fault is the partial delamination of the buffer block. The outer layer material and the inner core body separate. Under minor bumps, it is completely normal, but only when encountering a major impact will there be a "empty travel". Many car owners mistakenly believe that the shock absorber has failed and spend thousands of yuan to replace the shock absorber assembly, only to find out later that it was just the buffer block that cost only a few hundred yuan that was the problem.
Guidelines for Daily Maintenance and Replacement of Shock Absorber Blocks
The cost of inspecting the shock absorber blocks is extremely low. During each routine minor maintenance, the maintenance worker only needs to shine a flashlight through the gap in the wheel arch and look at the dust cover on the outside of the shock absorber to visually see the condition of the buffer block: if the surface has obvious cracks and pressing it with your hand has no rebound feeling, there is no need to wait for abnormal sounds to occur before replacing it. When replacing, be sure to avoid two misunderstandings: Do not buy cheap three-no auxiliary buffer blocks priced at a few yuan. These products use recycled polyurethane materials, which have either too high or too low hardness. Too hard means no buffering, and too soft means insufficient support. Installing them will instead cause new chassis abnormal noises. Do not blindly pursue so-called "reinforced and thickened modified buffer blocks". These products will change the suspension travel set by the original factory, compressing the normal working range of the shock absorber, and instead make the shock absorber constantly operate under high load, accelerating component damage. Choose and use regular brand shock absorber blocks with exactly the same hardness and size as the original factory's. This is the most cost-effective maintenance method. This small part, priced at only a few hundred yuan and hidden deep in the chassis, silently bears the hardest part of each impact, using extremely low cost to protect the lifespan of the entire suspension system. It is an invisible safety guardian that every car owner who values chassis quality should not overlook.
