Failure consequences
If the dust cover is cracked or aged, external impurities will quickly grind the internal parts, causing loss of lubricating grease, joint looseness, and increased abnormal noise, ultimately leading to early failure of the joint and even affecting driving safety. Therefore, if damaged, it is necessary to replace it in time.
Common failure phenomena and judgment
Visual inspection: The rubber/thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) of the dust cover shows cracks, holes, or is covered with a large amount of black/yellow lubricating grease that has been ejected.
Dynamic abnormal noise: A "clicking" sound is emitted from the front wheels when turning (fault of the ball cage), or there is a loose metal impact sound from the chassis when passing over bumpy roads (fault of the ball head or tie rod).
Gap detection: Shake the wheel or tie rod with your hand. If you feel a significant looseness gap, it indicates that the internal joint has been damaged due to lack of oil.
Functional abnormality: Steering becomes heavier, the vehicle veers or the shock absorber leaks oil (failure of the dust cover causes sand and dust to wear out the oil seal).
Core hazards
Lubrication failure: The internal lubricating grease is ejected, the joint is dry and wears, and the service life is shortened by several times.
Secondary damage: Dust, sand enter and accelerate the wear of bearings/ball heads, small problems (replacement of the set) evolve into major repairs (replacement of the entire joint assembly/constant velocity joint), and the cost increases sharply.
Safety hazard: Severe wear may cause the transmission shaft to get stuck or the steering tie rod to fall off, affecting driving safety.
Treatment plan
Minor damage (early detection): If there is no wear or gap in the internal joint, the old grease can be cleaned, a special dust cover kit can be replaced, and the lubricating grease can be re-added.
Severe damage (abnormal noise/looseness): If there is already abnormal noise or gap, it indicates that the internal mechanical parts have been damaged. It is necessary to replace the entire joint assembly (such as the constant velocity joint assembly, tie rod head), and replacing the dust cover alone is ineffective.
Construction note: When installing, ensure that the clamp is tightly sealed to avoid secondary oil leakage; for some models, special tools are required to remove the half shaft, and it is recommended to be operated by professional technicians to prevent damage to the oil seal.
Suggestion: During regular maintenance, focus on checking the rubber parts of the chassis. If the dust cover shows oil leakage or cracks, repair it immediately, do not drive with a faulty vehicle.
