What is the sound insulation panel located at the lower left part of the car dashboard?

The lower left part of the car dashboard (often referred to as "dashboard underlay" or "front panel sound insulation and heat insulation pad") is a layer of composite sound-absorbing/anti-vibration material located at the junction between the engine compartment and the driver's cabin, beneath the dashboard. Its main function is to block the transmission of engine noise, heat, and vibration into the passenger cabin.

Location: It is close to the firewall (front panel), in the lower left corner of the dashboard (above the driver's footrest), usually covered by the dashboard assembly and not visible.

Material: It is typically a composite structure of shock-absorbing board + sound-absorbing cotton (such as linear cotton, polyester fiber) + heat insulation layer. Some models may also include an aluminum foil heat protection layer.

Function: It suppresses the transmission of mid-low frequency noise (such as idle rumbling) from the engine compartment, reduces heat conduction, and absorbs resonance, thereby improving the quietness and comfort of the passenger cabin.

Non-standard detachable parts: The original factory usually installs it, but the thickness/efficiency varies by model; during modifications, this area is often reinforced with materials like "STP" or "European standard shock-absorbing board" to enhance sound insulation (note: not referring to the decorative pieces on the dashboard surface).

If you see a black/grey sponge-like or aluminum foil composite board, it is this component; if it is damaged or fallen off, it may cause abnormal noise or increased noise. It is not a collision part and does not contribute to structural safety, but it affects NVH (noise, vibration, and acoustic roughness) performance.

The lower left part of the car dashboard (usually located inside the engine firewall and beneath the dashboard) mainly functions to block the transmission of engine compartment noise (especially high-frequency operating sounds) into the driver's cabin and suppress the vibration and resonance of the metal structure, thereby improving quietness and comfort.

Noise reduction and sound insulation: This position is close to the engine firewall and is one of the main paths for engine noise (such as high-speed rumbling, detonation) to enter the cabin. The sound insulation board absorbs or reflects sound waves through damping materials, significantly reducing mid-high frequency noise.

Shock absorption and vibration suppression: It prevents the dashboard brackets or metal plates of the firewall from resonating due to engine vibration, avoiding abnormal sounds (such as "buzzing" or "clicking") and improving structural durability.

Heat insulation assistance: Some designs also have a slight heat insulation function, reducing the transmission of engine heat to the passenger cabin (but not the main responsibility; the main heat insulation is provided by the firewall itself).

Sealing and buffering: If it contains rubber or foam components, it can fill gaps, reduce wind noise or frictional noise generated by wiring/pipe lines.

This component is typically a black damping pad (butyl rubber + aluminum foil or non-woven fabric composite), non-detachable decorative piece, belonging to the original factory passive noise reduction/vibration suppression structure. If it is damaged or falls off, you may hear vibration noises coming from the dashboard area when accelerating or driving at low speeds.

The lower left part of the car dashboard usually does not have a "sound insulation board". If there are abnormal noises, looseness, or detachment in this area, it is more likely caused by failure of plastic trim, snap fasteners, or friction between wiring/brackets, rather than a "sound insulation board failure".

First, confirm if it is truly a "sound insulation board": The lower left part of the dashboard is usually a plastic trim, air conditioning outlet duct, wiring sheath, or steering column guard, while the main sound insulation materials are found in the chassis or engine compartment; there is usually a small amount of sound-absorbing cotton inside the dashboard, but it is rarely called a "sound insulation board" and is not easily "faulty".

Common real problems: Abnormal noises (such as buzzing or clicking sounds) are mostly caused by aging and breaking of plastic snap fasteners, loose trim, wiring friction, or thermal expansion and contraction. Pressing on this area if the noise disappears indicates loose trim.

Self-check method: After turning off the engine, gently press the lower left part of the trim and try to reproduce the noise; check for missing snap fasteners, loose screws (if there are visible fixing points), or use a flashlight to check if the wiring is rubbing against metal brackets.

Temporary solution: You can replace with a special plastic snap fastener, fix the wiring with nylon ties, or apply a silicone/membrane strip (do not use glue) at the friction points. If it involves the steering column, air conditioning ducts or near the safety airbags, do not attempt to disassemble forcefully.
Professional advice: If the abnormal noise is obvious, accompanied by vibration or suspected to involve structural components (such as instrument panel brackets, steering column guards), it is recommended to have it diagnosed at a 4S store or professional repair shop. Avoid mistakenly touching safety systems or causing further damage.
If it is actually a damage to the bottom sound insulation cotton at the side of the engine compartment or the foot pedal area of the driver's seat (often mistakenly called "the lower left part of the dashboard"), it belongs to the chassis/firewall sound insulation parts. The vehicle needs to be lifted for inspection. It is usually not a mandatory repair item and only affects the noise experience. Please clearly determine whether the abnormal noise is only in the interior dashboard area and occurs with bumps/temperature changes, in order to make an accurate judgment.
