Product knowledge

What is the heat insulation layer on the right rear panel of the car?

"The right rear panel insulation layer" is not a standard term. If referring to the insulation layer of the right rear window (the glass on the rear side), it generally refers to the "side rear insulation film" (sunshade) that is attached to the inner side of the glass; if referring to the insulation material inside the metal panel of the vehicle (such as the right rear fender or the door), it is mostly the factory-pre-installed sound-absorbing/insulation cotton or damping layer.

If referring to the window area: The right rear panel insulation layer is actually the insulation film (part of the "side rear film") attached to the right rear window, made of PET substrate with metal/ceramic coating, used to block infrared radiation, filter ultraviolet rays, and enhance privacy and explosion safety.

If referring to the interior of the vehicle panel: Some models will install shock-absorbing insulation cotton/ asphalt damping sheet inside the right rear fender or door to reduce noise and insulation (not the film, but a structural material), but this is not the "panel" itself, but is attached to the inner side.

Please note: "Panel" in the automotive context usually refers to the vehicle body covering (such as fenders, door panels), and if the insulation layer is used for the glass, it is called "insulation film"; if it is used for the inner side of the metal/plastic panel, it is called "insulation/sound insulation material". When saying "side rear film" in daily life, it only involves the right rear window glass, not the vehicle panel itself. If you mean the right rear window, it is the side rear film; if you mean the inner side of the door or wheel arch, it is the original factory insulation cotton.

The right rear panel insulation layer of the car (usually referring to the insulation/sound insulation material inside the vehicle body panel or wheel arch) mainly functions to block the heat from the exhaust pipe, road heat radiation, and engine residual heat from being transferred to the cabin, while also having noise reduction and protection functions for wiring/pipe lines.

Insulation protection: Prevent the high temperature from the right rear (near the exhaust tailpipe or rear wheel arch) from being conducted through the panel to the cabin, reducing the temperature of the side panel, and improving the comfort of the passengers, especially in long-distance driving or in high-temperature environments.

Sound insulation and vibration reduction: Most insulation layers contain sound-absorbing/damping materials, which can absorb exhaust noise, road noise, and resonance sounds from the wheel arch, improving the quietness.

Protecting components: Prevent high temperatures or splashing objects (such as stone strikes, water vapor) from damaging nearby components such as the fuel tank, brake lines, wiring, or fuel evaporation control system (EVAP).

Auxiliary anti-corrosion: Some insulation layers have anti-corrosion coatings or sealing functions, reducing the risk of corrosion of the panel due to alternating heat and humidity.

Please note: If the "right rear panel" referred to is actually the "side rear window film" (often mistakenly called "insulation layer"), its function is to block infrared/ultraviolet rays, provide insulation and sun protection, and enhance privacy; but the insulation layer of the vehicle metal panel (not the film) of the panel itself is mainly for heat conduction and noise reduction, not for direct sunlight. The positions and materials are different - the former is inside the door/afterbody fender, and the latter is attached to the inner side of the glass.

The "right rear panel insulation layer failure" of the car usually refers to the loosening, damage, or detachment of the insulation board near the exhaust pipe or the three-way catalytic converter (not the window insulation film) rather than the "panel" itself having an insulation layer - most models only have a metal insulation board below the exhaust system.

Common manifestations: Abnormal heating of the right rear wheel arch or the right side floor of the vehicle, metallic knocking/shaking sounds (especially in cold engines or low speeds) in the vehicle, and significant temperature increase in the right rear area (such as the driver's right foot area or the rear seat area) inside the vehicle.

Root cause: The insulation board deforms, cracks, or shakes due to high temperature oxidation, stone strikes, or loose/fallen fixing screws, rather than the "side panel" built-in insulation layer (the passenger side body panel of a sedan generally has no dedicated insulation layer, except for electric vehicle battery insulation).
Risk warning: Continuous friction may burn the wiring, oil pipes, or interior; high temperature conduction may cause unpleasant odors, decreased comfort, and even safety hazards (such as melting carpets or near the fuel pipe). Self-check method: After the vehicle has come to a complete stop and cooled down, observe from the inner side of the right rear wheel arch or the bottom plate of the trunk if there are any sagging or broken metal plates (often wrapped around the exhaust pipe/silencer), and gently shake to see if they are loose; listen for abnormal sounds when the vehicle is started to see if they change with the engine speed.
Treatment suggestions: Do not ignore it for a long time - if it is only slightly loose, you can try to reinforce it (use heat-resistant clamps or replace the bolts); if it is damaged or falls off in a large area, you must replace the original factory or compatible heat insulation board (about 200–800 yuan, depending on the vehicle model), and do not remove it directly.
If it actually refers to the failure of the right rear window heat insulation film (such as bubbling, peeling off, or heating wire short circuit), it is a different issue: if the rear windshield heating wire fails, it can be determined by "the glass is not heated after turning off the defogging switch + seeing the broken wire with the naked eye", and the rear windshield needs to be replaced; for the film issue, it can be repaired locally or reattached.
It is recommended to go to the repair shop as soon as possible to lift the vehicle and check the condition of the exhaust system heat insulation board to avoid increasing the risk during night or high-temperature driving.
