The function of the car rearview camera component
The core function of the car rearview camera component is: to automatically start when in reverse gear, capture real-time images of the rear and display them on the interior screen, helping the driver intuitively identify obstacles in blind spots (such as pedestrians, low objects, vehicles or curb), significantly improving the safety and accuracy of reversing.
Visual blind spot compensation: Through a wide-angle (usually 120°–140°) lens to cover the rear area, it compensates for the blind spots of the rearview mirror and the rearward glance.
Automatic triggering: Linked with the reversing lights or gear position signal, it activates without manual operation; engaging the R gear activates it.
Assistive decision-making: Most systems overlay dynamic guiding lines to estimate the distance between the rear of the vehicle and obstacles, assisting in steering control.
Night vision and environmental adaptation: Integrated with infrared illumination or image optimization, it supports imaging in low-light, underground garages, etc.; it has waterproof, shockproof, and temperature-resistant vehicle-grade design.
ADAS foundation: As one of the input sensors for advanced driver assistance systems (such as 360° panoramic parking, blind spot monitoring), some models also support automatically activating the side view when reversing.
This component is typically composed of a wide-angle lens, CMOS/CCD image sensor, protective housing (IP67/IP68 level), video output module, and installation bracket. It does not work independently and needs to be integrated with the display, wiring harness, and control unit to form a complete reversing image system. Since 2025, China has mandated that new passenger vehicles must be equipped with reversing images, highlighting its status as a basic safety feature.
Common causes of failure of this component and troubleshooting steps are as follows:
First, check if the camera is blocked by dirt, mud, or snow or if the lens is damaged: Use a soft cloth (dipped in a small amount of lens cleaner) to gently wipe the lens. If the picture returns, it is not a hardware fault.
Confirm if the reversing lights are normally illuminated after engaging the R gear: If the reversing lights do not light up, it may be a problem with the gear switch, fuse (refer to the manual for location), or the triggering circuit for the reversing lights, causing the camera not to be powered on.
Check if the wiring plug of the rear door/backup camera harness is loose, oxidized, or broken (especially at the area where the door opens and closes, prone to wear), reinsert it and test for continuity with a multimeter (if possible).
Observe the abnormal display on the central control screen: Black screen/blue screen (possibly no power supply or signal line break), snowflakes/image distortion (damage to the image sensor of the camera or electromagnetic interference), no light at night (infrared LED light broken).
Try restarting the vehicle system (press the power button for 10 seconds or disconnect the negative terminal of the power supply for 10 minutes) to rule out software freeze; check if "reversing image" is mistakenly turned off in the central control settings.
If cleaning, wiring, and restarting are ineffective, and the power supply is confirmed to be normal (reversing lights are on, fuse is intact), then the camera or the vehicle's video module may be damaged hardware, and an OBD diagnostic tool should be used to read the fault codes of the body control module (such as B2004, U1000 type) or the image system (if available, contact a 4S store for free repair).
Adding equipment or if there is a water immersion/collision history, it is necessary to carefully check for short circuits/corrosion of the wiring; for original factory vehicles, if they are part of a recall model (such as General Motors' 2023–2025 Malibu), contact a 4S store for free inspection.
If one cannot solve it by themselves, do not continue to rely on reversing without an image; immediately go to a professional repair shop or 4S store to use specialized diagnostic tools for testing to avoid blindly replacing parts. Daily attention should be paid to avoiding direct high-pressure water jets on the rear door camera, and regular inspection of the wiring protection.
