The function of the vehicle control module

The vehicle control module (typically referred to as the Body Control Module, BCM) is one of the core components of modern automotive electronic systems, primarily responsible for centralized management and intelligent control of the electrical appliances in the vehicle body, enhancing vehicle safety, convenience, and energy efficiency. Its core functions can be summarized as follows:
Power Management: Integrating the power supply of all vehicle electrical devices within the module, reducing the number of wiring harnesses, lowering the risk of short circuits, and optimizing power distribution.
Lighting Control: Managing headlights, turn signals, interior lighting, etc. Some models support the "Guiding Home" delayed off-light function; in the event of overloading or short circuits in the circuit, it automatically cuts off the power supply to prevent wire damage.
Wiper Control: Automatically adjusting the wiper speed based on rainfall and supporting manual adjustment of intermittent gears, simplifying the hardware structure.
Centralized Door Locking and Remote Control Reception: Achieving automatic door locking (such as when the vehicle speed is ≥ 10 km/h), remote opening and locking, tailgate opening, and car search functions.
Vehicle Body and Engine Anti-theft: Triggering alarms (siren, flashing lights) in case of illegal intrusion and preventing unauthorized keys from starting the vehicle through interaction with the engine ECU.
Fault Self-Diagnosis: Detecting abnormalities in itself or associated components, alerting the owner through the instrument fault light and storing fault codes for maintenance and diagnosis purposes.
In addition, the BCM works collaboratively with other control modules (such as the engine ECU, TCU, etc.) via onboard networks (such as CAN/LIN), being a key node for achieving vehicle intelligence.
If there are issues such as abnormal lighting or malfunctioning windows, it is recommended to first check the BCM-related fuses and connectors. In cases where necessary, professional personnel should use diagnostic equipment to read the fault codes to avoid accidental disassembly causing static damage.
The vehicle control module includes various types, and the failure manifestations of different modules vary significantly. The core issue is that the vehicle fails to start, functions fail, or the fault indicator light illuminates. Mainly divided into the following categories:
Engine and Power Control Module
Engine Control Unit (ECU): As the vehicle's brain, when faulty, the vehicle cannot start or has difficulty starting, suddenly stalls while driving. Engine power decreases, acceleration becomes weak, warning lights on the dashboard illuminate, and even communication or power supply abnormalities occur.
Fuel Pump Control Module: Causing a disruption in fuel supply, resulting in difficulty starting, stalling while driving, increased fuel consumption, and abnormal engine noise.
Body Electrical Control Module
Body Control Module (BCM): Controls the vehicle body electrical appliances. When faulty, the vehicle lights, wipers, window regulators, door locks, etc. fail to function properly. Remote keys fail to work, unable to unlock or lock the vehicle, dashboard indicator lights go out. Automatic transmission models may experience problems such as the trunk unable to open, the car key unable to be pulled out, or the P gear locked.
Centralized/AC Module: Display black screen or touch malfunction, inability to adjust temperature or wind speed of the air conditioner, weakened cooling and heating effects.
General Fault Symptoms
The fault indicator light on the dashboard is constantly illuminated, alerting the driver of a fault. The vehicle exhibits unstable driving, shaking, or abnormal sounds. Some electronic devices have no response or communication interruption, and power management is disordered. If any of the above symptoms occur, it is recommended to have a professional inspection and repair promptly to avoid potential safety hazards.
The warranty period after the replacement of the vehicle control module does not have a national standard. However, based on the current (April 2026) publicly available information, the following can be summarized:
General rules for replacement warranty after repair
‌Replacement within the original factory warranty period: The new control module inherits the remaining warranty period of the original module and continues to enjoy the same services.
‌Replacement outside the original factory warranty period at one's own expense:
Most brands offer a warranty period of 1 year or 10,000 kilometers (whichever comes first).
Some brands, such as Kia K2, provide a warranty period of 2 months after repair.
For specific models (such as Changan Ford Focus), if it is from a specific batch, the transmission control module has an extended warranty of 10 years or 240,000 kilometers.
Brand/Model Differences
Haval:
PHEV models: The first owner has a lifetime warranty, and non-first owners have an 8-year or 150,000-kilometer warranty (whichever comes first);
DHT models: The motor controller has a 8-year or 150,000-kilometer warranty;
Zeke (new energy):
Battery capacity ≥ 92% within 2 years or 50,000 kilometers of the motor controller, ≥ 70% within 8 years or 200,000 kilometers;
Tesla:
Vehicle warranty of 4 years or 80,000 kilometers, for the sixth-generation module, if used normally and not damaged by accidents, it can still enjoy the original warranty after repair;
Changan, Beijing Automotive:
Engine/body control module is usually included in the vehicle warranty, for 3 years or 100,000 kilometers.
Practical suggestions:
Refer to the "Warranty Manual": The most accurate warranty information is based on the vehicle files.
Keep maintenance vouchers: including replacement records, work orders, invoices, etc., for rights protection.
Contact the official 4S store or customer service: confirm specific policies through the brand's official website or customer service hotline.
Note the starting point of the warranty: usually calculated based on the vehicle's manufacturing date rather than the purchase invoice date.
If due to an accident, unauthorized disassembly, or non-authoritative repair, the warranty may be lost.
