The function of car fog lights

Headlights for foggy weather mainly provide penetrating illumination and alert others. They help you see the road clearly in low visibility and also enable others to see you.
How to illuminate the road in foggy weather
The light from fog lights is diffused and has a longer wavelength. It can penetrate tiny particles in thick fog, heavy rain or snow dust without forming a "light wall" like high beam lights, which can blind drivers. Front fog lights usually use yellow light sources, which have stronger penetrating power.
How to be seen by others on the road
The rear fog lights have high brightness and are similar in brightness from all angles. The light intensity is just right when seen through fog, allowing vehicles behind to clearly identify your position.
When to turn on fog lights
Turn them on when visibility is below 200 meters, in combination with low beam lights, position lights and tail lights. Do not turn them on on sunny days without fog. High brightness scattering can be dazzling and affect others.
Core faults of car fog lights include not working, constantly lighting or being unable to turn on. The main causes are concentrated on bulb burnout, fuse melting, relay/switch failure, circuit open/closed and control module abnormalities. They need to be checked in an "easy-to-hard" order.
Core fault causes and troubleshooting sequence
Bulb damage: One-sided non-functioning is mostly due to broken or blackened bulb filament. Replace with the same model bulb (note power matching to avoid fault codes from LED replacement).
Fuse melting: If both lights do not work, check the fuse box marked "Fog Light" first. If broken, replace with the same specification new part.
Relay/switch failure: Listen for a "click" sound when the relay operates; confirm the operation logic of the switch (most vehicles require opening position lights/near beam lights before activating fog lights).
Circuit and grounding issues: Check for loose plugs, damaged wire skins, corrosion or poor grounding. Use a multimeter to test continuity and voltage.
Control module (BCM) failure: If the above are normal but still not working, it may be a fault code reported by the vehicle computer module, requiring a professional diagnostic tool to read the fault code.
Key operation precautions
Preparatory steps: Before troubleshooting, make sure to turn off the engine and disconnect the power supply to prevent short circuits; avoid touching the glass part when replacing bulbs.
Specification matching: Fuses must be of the same amperage; bulbs need to be checked for model (such as H11/H21) and power. For LED modifications, additional decoding resistors may be needed.
Safety warning: When involving circuit cutting, module programming or uncertain circuit paths, go directly to a professional repair shop. Do not attempt to short-circuit test forcibly.
If the fog light icon is displayed on the dashboard but the light does not turn on, it is mostly due to bulb or local power supply issues; if the icon is not on but the light is on, it is mostly due to instrument indicator failure; if there is no response at all and the fuse is intact, focus on suspecting the switch or relay.
When fog lights fog up, first distinguish between normal physical condensation or sealing failure due to water ingress: Thin fog that disappears within 10-15 minutes after turning on the fog light is normal and can be handled by natural heat dissipation; large water droplets, water accumulation or persistent non-disappearance require inspection of sealing strips, cracked lamp covers or blocked ventilation pipes, and may need to remove the lamp for drying and replacement of seals.
Judgment criteria and corresponding measures
Minor fog (normal phenomenon): Thin fog appears after washing or when there is a large temperature difference, without large water droplets. Turn on the fog light/lights for 10-15 minutes and it will dissipate on its own. No disassembly is required; use heat to naturally discharge.
Severe water ingress (fault): There are obvious water droplets flowing or accumulating in the lamp, or the fog light does not disperse for 30 minutes or more. It may require checking the sealing strip, cracked lamp cover or blocked ventilation pipe, and may need to remove the lamp for drying and replacement of seals.
Emergency risk: If water contacts the circuit interface, the bulb flashes or fails to light up, immediately cut off the power supply and stop using it to prevent short circuits and corrosion, and send it for repair.
Specific handling steps Natural drying method: Park in a sunny area and expose to the sun for 2-4 hours, or turn on the fog lights/far headlights for 10-15 minutes and then turn them off. Let it stand for 30-60 minutes. Utilize the residual heat to evaporate the water vapor and expel it through the ventilation tube.
Auxiliary drying method: Remove the rear dust cover, use an electric hair dryer or a low-temperature setting lamp to blow at the lamp body at a distance of more than 20 cm for 10 minutes. Do not use high-temperature hot air to directly blow on the plastic lamp cover to prevent deformation and yellowing.
Deep repair method: If the above methods are ineffective, remove the lamp cover, pour out the accumulated water, thoroughly dry the inside, inspect and replace the aged sealing strips, repair cracks or clear the ventilation tube; within the warranty period, non-human damage can be claimed for free by contacting the 4S store. Notes for Attention
Do not insert desiccant packs into the lamp. This may cause blockage of the ventilation pipe and exacerbate the problem.
Avoid direct spraying of high-pressure water guns onto the fog lamp gap in daily use. Check the lamp promptly after getting wet.
If you need to disassemble the lamp yourself, you will need special tools and sealant. Improper operation may damage the lamp cover. For those without experience, it is recommended to have it handled by a professional auto repair shop.
