What is the automotive fuel pump assembly?
The automotive fuel pump assembly is the core component of the fuel supply system in an electronic fuel injection engine, responsible for drawing fuel from the fuel tank, pressurizing it, and delivering it to the fuel supply lines, while also cooperating with the fuel pressure regulator to establish a stable pressure, ensuring the continuous fuel supply to the fuel injectors.
Its main components include:
- Fuel pump assembly: usually refers to the fuel pump unit integrated in the fuel tank, consisting of the pump body, fuel level sensor, pump support, and fuel pressure regulator, etc.
- Core components:
- Pump body: the core structure, responsible for drawing fuel and transporting it through the impeller.
- Impeller/Rotor: rotates to draw fuel from the fuel tank and pressurize it to send it to the pipeline.
- Sliding valve/Sliding plate: controls the fuel flow and adjusts the supply volume according to the engine's requirements.
- Pressure limiter (Safety valve): prevents the system pressure from being too high, and opens the bypass when the pressure exceeds the limit to allow the fuel to flow back to the inlet.
- Check valve (One-way valve): keeps the "residual pressure" in the pipeline when the fuel pump is off to prevent fuel from flowing back to the fuel tank.
- Filter: filters impurities to prevent foreign objects from entering the pump body and the engine.
- Sealing parts and wiring terminals: ensure no leakage and connect the power supply and ground wire.
Points to note:
When the fuel pump is working, the motor is immersed in the fuel and lubricated and cooled by the fuel. It cannot be tested dryly - when it is disassembled and tested with power on, residual fuel may cause an explosion due to the spark from the brush, and new pumps tested dryly may also burn out the motor due to inability to dissipate heat.
The built-in gasoline filter is integrated on the fuel pump assembly in the fuel tank. Replacement requires disassembly and removal of the seat or opening the fuel tank cover. It is generally recommended to replace it every 5 to 8 thousand kilometers; failure to replace it for a long time will lead to poor fuel supply, weak acceleration, and increased load on the fuel pump, and in severe cases, damage to the fuel pump.
Common faults of the fuel pump: the vehicle fails to start, sudden engine shutdown during driving but other systems are normal, usually it is a lack of fuel supply, and the fuel pump may be damaged.
The core function of the automotive fuel pump assembly is to draw fuel from the fuel tank, pressurize it, and deliver it to the fuel supply lines, while cooperating with the fuel pressure regulator to establish a stable fuel pressure, ensuring the continuous normal operation of the engine.
Specific functions:
- Fuel suction and pressurization: draw fuel from the fuel tank and pressurize it, delivering it to the fuel supply lines and fuel injectors to ensure smooth fuel flow to the engine.
- Maintaining system pressure: cooperate with the fuel pressure regulator to control the fuel pressure within a stable range (generally about 0.4 MPa, depending on the engine model), ensuring the fuel injectors have good atomization.
- Preventing backflow: the check valve at the outlet automatically closes when the fuel pump is off to prevent fuel from flowing back to the fuel tank and maintaining the "residual pressure" in the pipeline, facilitating the next start.
- Safety protection: when the engine stops but the ignition switch is still on, the control module will automatically cut off the power supply to the fuel pump to avoid accidental ignition.
Component composition:
The fuel pump assembly is an integrated component, typically consisting of the following parts:
- Fuel pump body: the core component, consisting of an electric motor, pressure limiter, check valve, etc., responsible for fuel suction and pumping.
- Filter: including the fuel suction filter (coarse filter) and the fuel filter (fine filter), filtering impurities in the fuel to prevent the fuel injectors from clogging.
- Fuel pressure regulator: regulating and stabilizing the system pressure, opening the valve when the pressure is too high to allow the fuel to flow back to the fuel tank.
- Fuel level sensor unit: containing an oil float, used to detect the fuel level in the fuel tank and feed back to the dashboard.
