What is the function of the car water pump?
The main function of the car water pump is to make the coolant rotate within the engine to prevent overheating.
Core task: To increase the pressure of the coolant and force it to circulate between the engine and the radiator.
How it works: The engine drives the pump's rotor to rotate, drawing out the hot water from the cylinder block and pumping in the cooled water.
Electronic water pump: Electronic water pumps are commonly used in new energy vehicles. They are driven by an electric motor and can intelligently adjust the flow rate according to temperature, saving more electricity.
If the water pump breaks down, it is likely to cause high water temperature, water leakage, or abnormal noises.
The most critical symptom when the water pump fails is that the engine overheats, coolant leaks, and there are abnormal noises in the engine compartment that change with the engine speed. It is also accompanied by abnormal warm air, unstable idle speed, and other related manifestations. Failure to handle it promptly can easily cause serious damage to the engine, such as cylinder seizure.
Abnormal water temperature and circulation
The pointer of the dashboard water temperature gauge rapidly rises to the red zone, the water temperature alarm light lights up directly. In severe cases, steam may emerge from the engine compartment, and the coolant may "boil over".
After cold start, the water temperature quickly exceeds 90℃. Even if the cooling fan is running at full speed, the water temperature remains high. This indicates that the coolant is no longer able to circulate for heat dissipation.
Signs of coolant leakage
Pink, green, or blue liquid traces may appear at the bottom of the vehicle or at the junction of the water pump and the engine. This is an intuitive signal of coolant leakage.
The special ventilation and drainage holes of the pump housing will leave water marks with the color of the coolant, and the coolant level will continuously and slowly drop, requiring frequent replenishment.
Abnormal noises in the engine compartment
During idle, a "buzzing" or "squeaking" sound or metal friction sound can be heard. The frequency of the noise will increase synchronously with the engine speed as the engine speed increases.
The root cause of the abnormal noise is the wear and looseness of the internal bearings of the pump or the loosening and detachment of the impeller from the shaft. In severe cases, there may also be obvious vibration.
Other accompanying symptoms
The temperature of the air outlet in the cabin fluctuates unpredictably, or the warm air is not hot even when the water temperature is normal. This is caused by the inability of the coolant to circulate to the warm air heat exchanger.
The idle speed of the engine is unstable, and the speed pointer of the engine speed indicator jumps irregularly after starting. In winter, it may even cause unexpected engine shutdowns.
The engine enters an overheating protection state, showing symptoms such as lack of acceleration power and restricted power. If left untreated for a long time, it will directly cause deformation of the cylinder cover, burnout of the cylinder gasket, and other irreversible damage.
When the mechanical water pump of the car is broken, the most obvious symptoms are engine abnormal noise, abnormal increase in water temperature, and coolant leakage. Once discovered, it is necessary to repair it as soon as possible. Otherwise, it may cause severe damage to the engine.
What sounds to be alert for
Engine area abnormal noise: During idle or low speed, a "thumping thumping thumping" friction sound or "buzzing" sound can be heard, and the volume changes with the engine speed. This is a signal of bearing wear or loose impeller.
The sound becomes more obvious as the fault worsens: initially it may be slight, and later the noise becomes larger, even accompanied by belt vibration.
What is abnormal with the water temperature gauge
Large fluctuations in the water temperature pointer: The normal water temperature should be stable at around 90℃. During the fault, the pointer jumps within a certain range and cannot remain constant.
High water temperature or "boiling over": The pump's circulation capacity decreases, and the coolant cannot effectively dissipate heat. The water temperature gauge rapidly climbs to the red line, and the water tank may emit steam.
How to detect leakage and engine shutdown
Water marks on the ventilation holes of the water pump: Aging sealing rings cause coolant to leak from the ventilation holes, leaving pale yellow or green traces. There may be dripping liquid on the ground.
Idle instability or engine shutdown: The resistance of the pump's ventilation increases, affecting the belt, causing the speed pointer to jump during startup. This is more obvious in winter. In severe cases, the vehicle may directly shut down at a red light.
