The function of the car rubber cover

There are various types of rubber covers on cars, and their functions vary depending on the position. However, the core functions are to prevent water and dust from entering the vehicle, reduce vibration and noise, and protect internal components. In simple terms, these covers act as "little guards" for the holes, interfaces, and moving parts on the vehicle.

Sealing protection type (blocking covers)
Function: Seal the process holes, wiring holes, etc. reserved on the vehicle body to prevent rain, sand, and dust from entering the interior, avoiding rust and damage to the wiring.
Common positions: Chassis, engine compartment, interior panels.
Note: If these rubber covers age or fall off, they may accumulate water and rust when it rains or during water immersion. It is recommended to check the chassis.

Buffer and shock absorption type (comfort and noise reduction)
Function: Absorb vibrations and impacts through the elasticity of rubber, reducing direct collisions between metal parts and lowering abnormal noises and vibrations inside the vehicle.
Common positions: Suspension bushings, engine foot rubber, engine hood buffer rubber pads, etc.
Note: After aging, they may become hard and crack, potentially causing abnormal noises during driving, steering drift, or abnormal tire wear. Regular checks and replacements are recommended.

Sealing strip type (sound insulation and waterproofing)
Function: Fill the gaps in the vehicle doors, windows, and skylights to block wind noise, rain, and dust, improving the quietness and comfort inside the vehicle.
Common positions: Door frames, windows, edges of front and rear windshields.
Note: Regular maintenance can be done with a neutral cleaner to avoid direct sunlight; generally, replace them every 3-4 years or when cracks appear.

Interface protection cover type (dust and moisture protection)
Function: Protect exposed interfaces such as the diagnostic interface (OBD interface) on the vehicle from dust and water entering, causing poor contact or damage.
Common positions: Below the driver's seat, below the center console's OBD interface.
Note: Dust from car washing or floor mats can easily allow interfaces to get dirty. A dedicated silicone protection cover can be purchased and installed easily.

Common faults of rubber covers on cars include aging and cracking, hardening and deformation, resulting in poor sealing and subsequent oil leakage, water leakage, dust entry, or abnormal noises. This is a normal natural wear and tear, accelerated by high temperatures, alternating hot and cold conditions, and time.

To determine which specific rubber cover is faulty, the symptoms and solutions vary greatly depending on the position:
Engine compartment (valve cover pad, sealing ring): Oil leakage or oil sludge on the engine surface. Reapplying glue without replacing the gasket has a high recurrence rate; it is necessary to replace the new part and clean the installation surface.
Chassis suspension rubber sleeves, balance bar rubber sleeves: Abnormal noises when passing over speed bumps or bad roads, steering drift, uneven tire wear.
Engine foot rubber (engine bracket rubber pad): Obvious shaking of the steering wheel or seat during idling or waiting at a red light, strong impact when shifting gears.
Engine hood rubber pad: Loose closure of the engine hood, shaking or abnormal noises during driving.
Oil tank cover rubber ring: Smell of gasoline inside the vehicle, loose sealing of the oil tank.

How to determine and handle it yourself:
First, check without rushing to replace: Fine lines on the surface do not necessarily mean replacement is necessary. Confirm whether the rubber has cracked through, separated from the metal sleeve, or has a noticeable looseness, or if there is indeed abnormal noise, steering drift, or abnormal tire wear. Then, it is necessary to handle it.
Mild aging: You can use rubber maintenance agent or silicone-containing protective agent to wipe, restoring elasticity and luster, which can delay aging.
Severe cracking but not脱落: Small cracks can be repaired with rubber-specific glue in an emergency, but this is only a temporary solution.
Severe aging, cracking, deformation, and oil leakage: Replace the new part directly. This is the most thorough solution. Choose original factory parts or reliable brand parts; do not use inferior aftermarket parts, otherwise, it may recur soon.
For safety components (such as tires, transmission shaft rubber sleeves, brake-related), or when you are unsure, it is recommended to have it checked and handled at a formal repair shop or 4S store. The original rubber sleeves usually last for 50,000 to 80,000 kilometers. Even if they haven't broken down by then, it's still advisable to check them periodically.
