The function of the special-shaped plastic cover for the car
The special-shaped plastic covers on cars do much more than just "covering a hole". They are actually versatile components that aim to provide protection, sound insulation, heat insulation, and aesthetic appeal. Their specific functions depend on where they are installed.
Plastic cover in the engine compartment
This is the most common type, usually placed above the engine, and its main functions include:
Sound insulation and noise reduction: The inside of the cover usually has sound insulation material, which can absorb and block the noise generated by the engine, making the interior quieter.
Heat insulation and preservation: It isolates the engine's high temperature, preventing heat from penetrating the driver's cabin; at the same time, it can also protect the engine from heat loss, helping it reach the working temperature more quickly during cold starts, reducing carbon deposits.
Dust and water protection: It blocks dust, sand, and water from entering the engine interior, protecting sensitive components such as sensors and wire harness plugs from moisture and short circuits.
Airflow guidance: The original design has undergone wind tunnel testing and can guide airflow, allowing the engine to dissipate heat more evenly and avoiding local overheating.
Protection of wiring harnesses: It prevents the engine compartment's high temperature from accelerating the aging of rubber tubes and wiring harnesses, extending the lifespan of the parts.
Aesthetic and neat appearance: It makes the engine compartment look more organized and also facilitates the installation of maintenance positions such as oil filler ports and windshield washer filler ports.
It should be noted that some car owners think the cover blocks heat dissipation and remove it, which is actually a misconception. The engine's heat dissipation mainly relies on the radiator and coolant circulation. The cover does not affect heat dissipation; removing it will increase noise and the risk of dust intrusion.
Exterior plastic parts of the vehicle
These include bumpers, wheel arch liners, side skirts, etc., and their functions mainly focus on:
Lightweighting and fuel efficiency: Plastic is lighter than metal, reducing the vehicle's weight and fuel consumption.
Buffering and energy absorption: During low-speed collisions, it can deform elastically, absorbing impact force, and also providing a buffer for pedestrians.
Anti-corrosion and rust resistance: Plastic does not rust, and even if the paint is damaged, it is not afraid of corrosion.
Optimizing aerodynamics: Plastic is easy to be molded into complex shapes, which can better reduce wind resistance and noise.
Plastic parts inside the vehicle
For example, the decorative panel behind the center console, the door trim, etc., their main functions are:
Structural support and concealment: Hiding wiring, air conditioning pipes, etc., neatly.
Electromagnetic shielding: Reducing interference between electronic devices.
Collision buffering: It can act as a buffer during a collision, protecting precision electronic components.
In simple terms, special-shaped plastic covers are not just simple "covers", but design components that integrate multiple functions. During daily maintenance, it is important to keep them clean and intact, and not to remove them randomly.
Common faults of car special-shaped plastic covers usually manifest as:
Unable to open, broken locking mechanism, deformation, or abnormal noise, depending on which cover it is and to what extent it is damaged.
First, determine which type of fault it is:
Unable to open the cover: It is mostly due to dust and oil contamination adhering, lock mechanism deformation/spring failure, or plastic deformation due to temperature changes. You can spray the gap with WD-40 or similar lubricants and try to open it later; if the lock mechanism is broken, check and correct or replace it; if it deforms due to exposure to heat or cold, move the car to a suitable temperature environment and try again.
Broken or loose locking mechanism: This is the most common. If it is only loose, press it back into place or reinstall it; if it is broken, for mild cases, use 502 glue, hot melt glue, or epoxy resin to glue it back; for severely damaged cases, replace the locking mechanism directly, either original or universal, usually on the door, luggage compartment cover, or windshield.
Deformation of the cover: For slight deformation, use a hot air gun (150–200°C, 10–15cm away) or hot water (80–90°C) to heat and manually shape it; for severe deformation, remove it and repair it with plastic welding or molds, or replace it directly.
Strange noise: Press the cover to locate the source of the noise, then remove it and apply felt tape or double-sided foam adhesive at the snap or seam, which can solve most problems; for large gaps, you can apply tire repair glue.
Precautions for self-repair
Before operation: First, confirm the damaged area; if unsure, consult the vehicle user manual. When disassembling, turn off the relevant power supply, and if necessary, disconnect the battery to prevent short circuits.
Choose the right method: ABS and PP plastics have different tolerances for adhesives and welding temperatures. Before repairing, determine the material first; do not blindly use glue or heat.
If the cover involves safety structures (such as bumper brackets) or is severely damaged, it is recommended to replace the original part directly; do not use glue to patch it up, as it may fall off during driving and pose a risk.
