What are the components of the car scraper?

The automotive scraper assembly usually refers to the part within the windshield wiper that directly contacts the glass and is responsible for wiping the water. Based on its structure and function, it can be mainly classified into the following categories:
‌Rigid blade wipers‌: The traditional design consists of a metal frame and rubber strips. The rubber strips are pressed onto the glass by several support points on the frame. The advantage is that they are inexpensive, but the disadvantage is that the pressure is uneven, resulting in water marks and noise.
‌Flexible blade wipers‌: Currently the mainstream design, there is no exposed frame. The pressure is distributed by an internal elastic steel plate, allowing the entire rubber strip to fit the curved glass. They are quieter, wipe cleaner, and have a longer lifespan.
‌Composite/triple-section wipers‌: Combining the advantages of the above two, light steel strips and an unexposed shell are used to reduce wind resistance, and a small frame is used to evenly distribute the pressure, resulting in better adhesion and stability.‌
From the perspective of system composition, the scraper assembly itself can be further divided into:
‌Scraper blades (rubber/silicone parts)‌: The part that directly contacts the glass, which is the main wear component and needs to be inspected and replaced every one or two years.
‌Scraper arms (wiper arms)‌: The metal support arms that connect the motor and the scraper blades, responsible for transmitting the power.
‌Interfaces‌: The clasps that connect the scraper arms and blades, commonly in U-shaped or side-inserted types. When changing the wiper, a matching interface for the vehicle model should be selected.‌
The core function of the automotive scraper assembly is to remove rain, snow, and dust from the windshield, ensuring clear driving vision and directly related to driving safety. It usually refers to the direct contact scraper blade (rubber/silicone part) within the windshield wiper, which is the final execution component of the entire wiper system responsible for "working".
Specific functions
Clearing rainwater: Scrub the water film on the glass surface during rainy days to prevent water stains from blurring the view.
Cleaning dirt: Remove dust, mud spots, bird droppings, etc. to keep the glass clean even on sunny days.
Coordinating with water spraying: Work in conjunction with the washing system to clean stubborn stains for better results.
Related components and types
The scraper (wiper blade) is usually part of a complete wiper system along with the wiper arm, linkage mechanism, and motor. The motor drives the linkage, which in turn moves the wiper arm and the blade. The market offers two main types of scrapers:
Bone wipers: Supported by a metal frame, they are cost-effective but have an uneven pressure distribution.
Non-bone wipers: Supported by elastic steel sheets, they distribute pressure more evenly, wipe cleaner, and have a longer lifespan.
The wiper blade is an easily worn component. It is generally recommended to replace it after about one year or when it cannot be cleaned properly or makes abnormal sounds.
When replacing, make sure to first confirm the vehicle interface type (U-shaped or plug-and-pull type) and install it. Then start the vehicle to check if it wipes cleanly and if there are any abnormal sounds.
Wiper component failure (usually related to the wiper) can be investigated in the order of "first check the exterior, then the wiring, and finally the motor". Most minor issues can be handled by oneself.
Common fault troubleshooting
Not cleaning properly or with water marks: Most likely due to aging, hardening, or cracking of the wiper rubber strip. Just replace the rubber strip, not necessarily the entire wiper blade, unless the bracket is deformed or the latch is loose.
No movement of the wiper: First check if the fuse is blown, then listen for the motor's sound. If the motor makes sound but doesn't move, it is likely that the wiper linkage rod has fallen off or the screws are loose; if there is no sound at all, check the motor and wiring.
Abnormal sounds or vibrations: First check if the rubber strip is aging, then adjust the angle of the wiper arm. If it vibrates in that direction, turn it a little in that direction.
Stuck or unresponsive: Check if the sensor and sensing plate gap is too large, and also check if there is any poor contact in the wiring.
Self-repairing small tasks
Replace the rubber strip: Confirm the type and size of the wiper interface (U-shaped, dovetail, etc.). Most family cars can replace it themselves, and before doing so, place a towel to prevent the wiper arm from bouncing back.
Adjust the angle: Stand in front of the vehicle and move left to right to adjust the wiper arm.
Clean foreign objects: If there are foreign objects on the wiper arm or blade, it can cause the motor gear to break. Remember to clean them before use.
Special attention:
If after inspection it is found that the wiper motor is damaged (such as a burnt smell or broken gears), or the wiring problem cannot be identified, it is recommended to directly go to an auto repair shop for handling, do not try to disassemble it yourself.
Daily maintenance suggestions
Don't dry scrape: Dry scraping on a glass without water is very damaging to the rubber strip and the glass.
Regular replacement: The rubber strip is generally replaced every 6-12 months. Pay attention to not letting the wiper freeze on the glass in winter.
Choose the right type: Non-bone wipers have more uniform pressure and a longer lifespan, and are the current mainstream choice.
