The function of the front brake disc of the car
Core Function: The front brake disc is the core rotating component of the disc brake system, rotating synchronously with the wheel; during braking, the caliper pushes the brake pads to clamp the disc surface, converting the vehicle's kinetic energy into heat energy through friction, achieving deceleration or stopping.
Why are the front wheel brake discs more crucial?
Carrying the main braking force: Due to the engine being positioned at the front and the braking inertia causing the center of gravity to shift forward, the front wheels usually bear approximately 70% of the braking force of the entire vehicle, and they wear and heat up more than the rear wheels.
Adapted to high load: Most vehicle models use ventilated discs (with a cavity between the double-layer discs), using air flow to enhance heat dissipation, preventing heat fade, and ensuring continuous braking stability; the rear wheels usually use solid discs.
Extended performance advantages: Compared to drum brakes, the front disc brake system has faster response, better drainage, and balanced left and right braking forces, which better meets the requirements of ABS/ESP and other electronic systems.
Note: The actual effect is affected by materials (gray cast iron/carbon ceramic), structure (ventilated/holes/paint lines), and operating conditions; daily attention should be paid to thickness wear (edge pits > 1.5mm or total thickness reduction ≥ 2mm requires replacement), to avoid inferior parts that "become smaller and thinner" affecting safety.
Emergency Warning: If during driving there is brake drift, severe shaking of the pedal, abnormal noise, or significantly longer braking distance, please immediately slow down and pull over to the side of the road, contact professional maintenance; do not repeatedly brake hard on the highway or long downhill sections.
Common Fault Manifestations and Causes of Front Brake Discs
Brake shake (more obvious at high speed): Mainly due to brake disc deformation (thickness deviation > 0.05mm), mostly caused by rapid cooling after braking (such as immediately rinsing after braking), long-term heavy load, or uneven material.
Abnormal noise (sharp metal sound/squeaking sound):
Shallow rust or hard spots on the brake pads → can be worn off by light;
"Iron rubbing iron" sound → brake pads worn to the limit (≤ 3mm), back plate scraping the disc, → must be replaced → otherwise accelerate disc damage.
Brake drift: Uneven wear of the single-side disc, poor return of the caliper, or failure of the pump, resulting in imbalance of left and right braking forces.
Surface defects:
Depth of groove < 1.5mm and no step → can polish the brake pads or "polish the disc" for repair;
Grove > 1.5mm, visible cracks, bluish spots (deformation) or bright spots (quenching) → must be replaced.
Note: The lifespan of the front brake disc is usually 6–80,000 kilometers (intense driving/high mountain roads can be shortened to 40,000 kilometers), but thickness is the only hard criterion; both left and right wheels must be replaced in pairs to avoid braking force imbalance.
Emergency Handling and Follow-up Procedures
Temporary response: Continuously apply intermittent braking to establish pressure when the brakes become soft, downshift to utilize engine braking; when the brakes become hard, check the vacuum assist system.
Self-check before sending for repair:
Visual inspection for cracks/deep grooves on the disc surface;
Light touch to the surface to check if it is smooth (wear protection gloves to prevent scalding);
Check the brake fluid level and for oil leakage in the lines (oil stains on the hub inner side = pump failure).
Maintenance principles:
Replace the disc and simultaneously check the brake pads and caliper guide pins;
优先 choose original or certified brands (such as Brembo, Trane), refuse non-verified aftermarket parts;
Only for the thickness margin being sufficient and other conditions such as no groove → no more than 2 times.
It is recommended to measure the thickness at every 10,000 kilometers (mountainous areas/nomadic vehicles every 5,000 kilometers) when performing regular maintenance, and immediately repair when the ABS/brake warning light on the instrument panel is on. Safety is no small matter, do not sacrifice the big picture for the sake of small things.
