The function of the front steering knuckle of a car
The front steering knuckle (commonly known as the "shepherd's horn") is the core load-bearing and motion hub of the front axle/steering axle. Its core functions are:
Load-bearing and force transmission: It transmits and withstands the static loads of the vehicle's front part and the dynamic impact loads during driving, requiring extremely high strength and fatigue life;
Realize steering motion: As the hinge point for the wheels to rotate around the main pin, it drives the front wheels to deviate at a specific angle, converting the input from the steering wheel into the wheel steering action;
System integration connection: It synchronously installs components such as the wheel hub, brakes (disc/ drum), suspension tie rods, steering rods, and half shafts, ensuring the coordinated operation of steering, braking, and suspension;
Affecting handling and safety: Its structural stiffness and positioning parameters (such as the set reference for the camber angle) directly determine the steering sensitivity, straight-line stability, and tire wear characteristics. Failure can lead to loss of control, shaking, or veering.
Note: The modern trend is towards lightweighting (aluminum forging), and some new designs integrate shock absorption functions (as described in patent CN224644940U), but the basic mechanical functions remain unchanged; the rear axle of rear-wheel drive or independent rear suspension models may also have a similar structure, but "front steering knuckle" specifically refers to the steering execution end of the front axle.
Important reminder
Do not attempt the operations circulating on the internet such as "killing the steering wheel to reset" or "adding grease by yourself" (such as removing the steering gear tail cover for oiling), which can easily damage the seal, cause leakage or calibration failure, leading to secondary damage or even loss of control.
Maintenance priority: Safety > Diagnosis > Repair. Non-professionals should only perform exterior and tire pressure checks, and internal faults (sensors, ECU, steering gear assembly) must be handled by certified technicians using specialized equipment.
Prevention suggestions: Replace the assist oil (hydraulic type) every 2 years or 40,000 kilometers; avoid holding the steering wheel in place for more than 10 seconds; regularly perform four-wheel alignment and chassis tightening checks.
