What is the car stop block?
The car limiters are mechanical/elastic devices installed on the key moving parts of the vehicle to limit the travel range and prevent excessive displacement or collision. They are not a single part but are classified into various types based on their position and function:
Main types and functions
Door limiters (devices)
Located at the door hinges, they achieve 2–3 levels of opening positioning through metal rods + grooves/rubber structures;
Function: Control the opening angle to prevent scratches and collisions, stabilize the door on slopes or in strong winds, and reduce hinge wear and abnormal noises.
Shock absorber limiters (buffer blocks/underlay blocks)
Mostly made of rubber or polyurethane, they are either attached to the shock absorber body or installed at the top of the tower;
Core function: Limit the maximum compression stroke of the suspension to prevent the shock absorber from "underlaying" and hitting the cylinder, causing permanent deformation of the spring; at the same time, absorb extreme working conditions impact and improve NVH performance and handling stability;
Note: Some models during new vehicle transportation will be equipped with blue temporary protective blocks, which must be removed after delivery; otherwise, it will lead to increased vibration and damage to the suspension.
Other types
Drum brake brake shoe limiters: Restrict the return and expansion range of the shoe to prevent abnormal noise and deviation;
Rear trunk/hood support rods limitation device: Control the opening height to protect the hydraulic rod;
(Notes: The gearshift position limiters are electronic/mechanical locking logic and are generally not called "limiters".)
Fault symptoms and maintenance suggestions
Common failure manifestations: Hard impact "clang" when crossing uneven surfaces, no sense of segmentation when opening/closing the door/automatic sliding, abnormal noise or deviation when braking;
Check points: Whether the rubber is cracked, hardened, or deformed; whether the metal parts are rusted and stuck;
The replacement cost is low (especially shock absorber limiters), but it can protect thousands of yuan of suspension system. It is recommended to check and verify during maintenance.
Tip: In daily language, "limiters" often specifically refer to "shock absorber buffer blocks" or "door limiters", and the specific position and function need to be determined based on the context.
The core impact of damaged car limiters is the loss of control and retention ability over the door opening angle, directly threatening the safety and convenience of vehicle use.
Main consequences
Uncontrolled door opening - The door may open too wide (exceeding the normal 60°–75° range), easily colliding with surrounding vehicles, walls or pedestrians, causing paint scratches and door deformation.
In slippery slopes or crosswinds, the door may automatically slide closed, causing injury to personnel or making entry and exit difficult.
Abnormal door closing - Failure of limiters may lead to the door being partially open or unable to fully lock, causing unexpected opening risks during driving; severely, it may require repeated forceful door closing to accelerate door lock/hinge wear.
Worsened operation experience
Increased resistance when opening/closing the door, jamming, abnormal noise (mostly due to lack of oil or component wear); long-term neglect will exacerbate metal fatigue and even fracture.
Some models have the phenomenon of "automatic rebound closing", interfering with the normal vehicle entry and exit process.
Increased safety risks
If the limiters completely fail and the door is not locked, there is a risk of accidental opening causing the occupants to fall (although the probability is low, the consequences are serious).
Abnormal noise distracts the driver's attention, indirectly affecting driving safety.
Note: It is necessary to distinguish between "door limiters" and "seat limiters". The damage to the latter mainly affects the stability of seat fixation (such as sliding during driving, abnormal noise), reducing passenger comfort, but does not directly affect the safety of the door.
Handling suggestions
Minor faults (only abnormal noise, sluggishness): After cleaning, apply special lubricating grease (do not use ordinary engine oil/grease), most can be restored.
Structural damage (arm bracket deformation, fracture, complete disappearance of limit feeling): Must replace the assembly. It is recommended to be operated by a professional repair shop (about 30 minutes), ensuring it matches the original vehicle specifications.
Daily maintenance: Check the lubrication status every 6 months or 2-3 ten thousand kilometers. Avoid forcefully opening and closing the door.
Note: Some promotions claim that "the limit device will never break" only applies to cases where there is no external force damage and regular maintenance is carried out; actual metal parts have an aging fatigue limit, and the risk of fracture is real. It cannot be generalized.
