The automotive dashboard air duct assembly is a key component of the car's air conditioning system. Its core function is to convey and distribute the cold or hot air from the air conditioning, ensuring the normal operation of the air conditioning system and facilitating the adjustment of the interior environment. - Connecting and integrating the air conditioning system: The various components of the air conditioning are scattered in different positions of the vehicle, and the air ducts are responsible for connecting and integrating the scattered components such as the compressor, blower, and evaporator, allowing the entire air conditioning system to work in an orderly manner.
- Transporting and distributing cold or hot air: The cooled or heated air is sent to various outlets in the vehicle to ensure that the air conditioning can cover different areas of the driver's cabin and meet the air outlet requirements at different positions.
- Zone-specific individual adjustment: The air ducts on both sides of the dashboard correspond to the driver's and passenger's areas, supporting independent adjustment of the wind direction and volume. In mid-to-high-end dual-zone/multi-zone air conditioning models, independent temperature adjustment is also possible, meeting the temperature requirements of different passengers.
- Assisting in deicing to ensure safety: The air ducts on both sides near the windows on the dashboard can direct the air to deice the side windows and the rearview mirrors, ensuring clear vision for the driver in rainy or foggy weather and enhancing driving safety.
- Special auxiliary functions: Some models have interior temperature sensors behind the dashboard, which require a small air duct to provide airflow to help the sensors accurately monitor the interior temperature and ensure the normal operation of the automatic climate control system.
There are no universal replacement procedures in public materials. The disassembly and assembly vary greatly among different models. The following provides a general reference process based on common repair manuals. Specific adjustments need to be made according to your vehicle model:
- Preparation
Tools needed: plastic pry tool, socket wrench, Phillips screwdriver, new air duct assembly, disconnect the vehicle power supply before operation to avoid accidental damage.
- Disassembling exterior decorative parts
First, use a plastic pry tool to pry open the decorative cover on the right side of the dashboard, then remove the passenger seat glove box, exposing the installation space where the air ducts are located; if your vehicle model requires the entire dashboard to be disassembled, you also need to remove the A-pillar trim, steering column guard plate, CD host, and other peripheral components, unscrew the dashboard fixing bolts (there may be hidden bolts at the air outlet position that need to be removed), and move the dashboard to expose the internal air ducts.
- Removing the old air duct assembly
Locate the connection interface on the right air duct, loosen the fixed clips or bolts at the interface, disconnect the connection between the air duct and the HVAC unit, and slowly remove the old air duct assembly; be careful not to pull and damage the surrounding wiring.
- Installing the new component
Align the new air duct assembly with the installation position, connect the inlet and outlet interfaces successively, re-secure the clips, and tighten the fixing bolts. Confirm that the interface is installed properly without leakage or loosening.
- Resetting and testing
Reset all decorative parts and dashboard components in the reverse order of disassembly, reconnect the power supply, and turn on the air conditioning to test different air volumes and outlet modes. Confirm that the air flow is normal, there is no leakage or abnormal noise at the interfaces, and the replacement is complete.
Note: Replacing this component requires disassembling the dashboard or related interior. The disassembly and assembly precision is high, and non-professional personnel may scratch the interior or damage the wiring when operating.
