The function of car wheel rims and tires
The wheel rims and tires are the two core components of the wheel assembly. They work together in a coordinated manner: the wheel rims are responsible for supporting and fixing the tires, while the tires are responsible for ground travel and shock absorption.
Wheel Rim (commonly known as the wheel hub): It is a metal base used for installing, sealing, and supporting the tire bead, bearing the tire pressure, transmitting driving force/braking force, withstanding lateral forces, and assisting in heat dissipation; together with the spokes, it constitutes the wheel structure to ensure that the tires do not come off or deform.
Tire: It is a rubber elastomer that directly contacts the ground, bearing the vehicle load, buffering road impacts, providing grip (for driving/braking/steering), and maintaining driving stability and comfort.
If referring to "wheel rim protecting the tire" (not a standard term, but a tire with hub protection design), its special structure (thorn guard with thick and rigid rubber ring at the toe) mainly functions to contact obstacles first when scraping against curb stones, avoiding the wheel rim from being scratched, while also providing certain appearance enhancement, but does not change the basic functions of the tire. Both must match the specifications (such as the diameter/width of the wheel rim should be consistent with that of the tire); otherwise, it will affect the sealing, safety and performance.
Common faults of car wheel rims and tires need to be handled separately: tire problems are mostly related to wear, bulging, puncture, and air leakage; wheel rim faults are mostly caused by deformation, cracks, or chronic air leakage due to sealing failure.
Tire bulging, cuts, exposed cord, or cracks on the sidewall: Replace immediately as they cannot be repaired. High-speed driving poses a risk of tire blowout.
Tire punctures caused by nails or holes: If the hole diameter is ≤ 6mm and in the tire crown area, it can be repaired; if on the sidewall, multiple repairs, or the tire tread is worn to a depth < 1.6mm, a new tire must be replaced.
Abnormal wear (skewing, unilateral, zigzag, central/side polishing): Usually due to abnormal tire pressure, off-center four-wheel alignment, poor dynamic balance, or wear of suspension components, a four-wheel alignment and dynamic balance test must be conducted.
Wheel rim deformation or cracks: Can cause high-speed shaking, chronic air leakage, and inability to seal. Mild deformation can be attempted to correct (only for steel wheel rims); cracks or severe deformation must be replaced. Aluminum wheel rims are usually not repairable.
Sudden tire blowout or severe air leakage: Steer the vehicle steadily, release the accelerator, do not brake abruptly. Park the car and set up a warning sign. Replace the spare tire or seek assistance; the spare tire is not a full-size tire and has a speed limit of 80 km/h for short-term use.
Wheel rim and tire joint area air leakage (not tire body leakage): Check if the valve cap is aged, if the rim edge is rusted or deformed, and if the tire lip is damaged. Usually, the tire needs to be removed for reinstallation and sealing.
If the fault is accompanied by steering shake, vehicle drift, abnormal noise, or tire pressure warning light on, stop at a safe place immediately, use a tire pressure gauge to test each tire, and avoid continued driving to prevent further damage to the rim or tire detachment. Self-handling is only for replacing the spare tire or simple patching (emergency); wheel rim problems, bulging, and structural damage must be handled by a professional repair shop or 4S store.
Daily prevention: Check the cold tire pressure monthly (refer to the door frame label), replace tires every 10,000 kilometers, avoid hitting curb stones, and regularly perform four-wheel alignment and dynamic balance.
The solution for damaged wheel rims (usually the hub) depends on the degree of damage: Minor scratches can be handled by oneself; deformation, cracks, or structural damage must be professionally evaluated; severe cases require immediate replacement.
Minor surface scratches/scuffs (not affecting the rim structure, no deformation): Clean and use fine sandpaper (above 1500 mesh) to polish, apply matching wheel color repair paint or use a wheel repair rod, no tire removal is required; if only affecting the appearance and not leaking air, it can be temporarily left untreated but needs regular inspection.
Moderate damage (edge, shallow cracks, slight deformation but no air leakage): Need to remove the hub for professional assessment; it may be repaired through welding, cold pressing correction, or air tightness test, but aluminum wheel rims have reduced strength after welding and are at risk under high-speed or heavy-load conditions, not recommended for long-term use.
Severe damage (obvious bending, cracks, rim depression deformation, tire air leakage, abnormal steering due to off-center dynamic balance) : Must be replaced immediately - structural integrity has been damaged, continued use can easily cause tire blowout, loss of control, etc.
After repair, dynamic balance and tire air tightness tests must be conducted; otherwise, even if the appearance is restored, abnormal wear or vibration may occur; if often driving on rough roads or originally a forged wheel rim, slight deformation also suggests direct replacement.
Do not weld, heat correct, or use non-specialty putty to fill; household tools cannot ensure metal stress and sealing. The risk is extremely high.
If the wheel rim is the "rim" (the metal ring part for tire installation) rather than the entire hub, and there is a depression, crack, or inability to seal, it also belongs to structural failure and can only be replaced. It is recommended to find a 4S store, professional wheel repair shop, or tire store (such as Tu Hu, Michelin Center) using a wheel detector to determine if it can be repaired; do not blindly believe the quick repair advertisement that "spraying paint will fix it". Safety comes first, followed by cost.
