What is the insulation layer at the lower part of the car's front compartment?

The lower insulation layer of the car's front compartment usually refers to the composite insulation/material layer installed at the bottom of the engine compartment (such as the front side of the firewall, the inner side of the engine guard plate, or the bottom plate of the front compartment). Common materials are aluminium foil + glass fiber cotton/foam resistant to fire. Its main functions are to prevent the high-temperature radiation from the engine from being conducted to the cockpit and the wiring harnesses in the front compartment, and to assist in noise reduction and dew prevention. The location is mostly at the junction of the engine compartment and the cockpit (in front of the firewall), the bottom plate of the front compartment, or the inner side of the engine guard plate. It is not the chassis insulation cotton. The function is: insulation (preventing engine hood paint from aging, reducing heat conduction in the cockpit), noise reduction (suppressing high-frequency mechanical noise), and dew prevention (avoiding fogging of the hot engine hood during rainy days that affects visibility). The alternative name is often mistakenly called "insulation cotton", but the professional terms are usually "front compartment insulation board", "fireproof insulation layer", or "thermal shielding layer"; if referring to the metal guard plate, it belongs to "engine lower guard plate" (not the main insulation body).
Note: If referring to the metal/plastic guard plate visible at the front of the car's underbody (commonly known as "lower guard plate"), its main function is to prevent stone strikes and mud water, and it does not have insulation effect on its own. The insulation layer is usually on the inner side or the inner side of the engine hood.
This layer is not a standard feature for all models. It is more common in luxury or high-performance cars. If missing or damaged, it may exacerbate the high temperature in the front compartment, accelerate the aging of wiring harnesses or cause premature loss of gloss on the engine hood paint. The insulation layer is usually on the inner side or the inner side of the engine hood.
This layer is not all models' standard configuration. It is more common in luxury or high-performance cars; if missing or damaged, it may intensify the high temperature in the front compartment, accelerate the aging of wiring harnesses or cause premature loss of gloss on the engine hood paint. The insulation layer usually reduces the impact of high temperatures on intake air temperature (indirectly maintaining the air-fuel ratio stability) and helps the engine cool down after shutdown, shortening the preheating time for the next cold start; in electric vehicles, it can also protect high-voltage wiring harnesses or electronic control units.
It also protects against corrosion and cleaning. Some of the bottom insulation pads also have functions of directing airflow or preventing oil mist splashing, maintaining cabin cleanliness, and avoiding carbon deposits or oil stains on sensitive components.
This layer is usually located on the inner side of the engine compartment guard plate, the front of the firewall, or above the exhaust path. The materials are mainly aluminium foil composite insulation cotton, ceramic fibers, or metal shielding plates. It is not chassis armor (which focuses on mechanical protection). If damaged or missing, it may cause the engine hood to bubble, abnormal increase in cabin temperature, frequent electronic failures, or increased noise.
The failure of the lower insulation layer of the car's front compartment (usually referring to the insulation/cotton layer at the bottom of the engine compartment or near the exhaust pipe) is often manifested as abnormal noises, abnormal temperature rise in the cockpit, overheating of components, and a burnt smell (if the insulation layer is in contact with the exhaust pipe and carbonizes).
Typical symptoms: During driving, a "clattering" or "buzzing" abnormal noise is heard from the front compartment (especially during cold starts or acceleration); the control panel or floor is locally hot; the temperature of the engine compartment is significantly higher; a burnt smell is detected (if the insulation layer is in contact with the exhaust pipe and carbonizes). Common causes: Long-term high-temperature aging and cracking, stone impact or bottoming deformation, failure and detachment of snap-fit/glue bonding, improper installation after repair, or design/batch defects in some vehicle models (such as poor heat insulation plate bonding in some early Volkswagen/Audi models).
Risk warning: Failure of the insulation layer will cause heat to be conducted to the chassis wiring, oil pipes, brake pipes or inside the vehicle, accelerating the aging of rubber parts and increasing fuel consumption. In extreme cases, if the insulation plate shifts and adheres to the exhaust manifold/turbocharger, it may cause smoke or even fire (there have been recall cases).
Self-check method: After the vehicle cools down, use a strong light flashlight to observe from under the wheel arch or the front bumper if the insulation plate is missing, frayed, loose or discolored; pay attention to whether there are new abnormal sounds or heat sensations.
Treatment suggestions: Minor fraying can be attempted to be fixed (using high-temperature clamps or steel wires); severely damaged, collapsed, or carbonized must be replaced with original or equivalent high-temperature insulation parts; do not use ordinary aluminum foil or foam as a substitute; it is recommended to have the vehicle lifted by a repair shop to confirm the condition to avoid self-disassembly and damage to the oil circuit/exhaust system.
If the vehicle is within the last 10 years and is a German brand (such as Volkswagen, Audi, BMW), check if there is a free recall for the front cabin insulation plate (for example, in 2021, about 300,000 vehicles of FAW-Volkswagen/Audi were recalled due to the risk of insulation plate delamination and deformation). Daily, avoid using a high-pressure water gun to rinse the bottom of the front cabin immediately after high temperature/terrain driving to prevent thermal shock from accelerating material deterioration.
