What are the components of the car carpet assembly?

Automotive carpet assemblies (i.e., the original factory "car interior carpet assembly") typically consist of the following core components:
- Carpet surface layer: Commonly made of nylon tufting, polypropylene needle-punched, or PVC materials, responsible for wear resistance, appearance, and slip resistance;
- Intermediate cushion/insulation layer: Mostly EVA, PU foam, non-woven fabric, or composite rubber-plastic materials (such as EPDM), used for sound absorption, shock absorption, and heat insulation;
- Base layer/backing layer: Usually non-woven fabric (water-jetted or needle-punched) or PE/PP film, used for structural support and moisture prevention;
- Positioning and fixation components: Including clips (mother-child clips, U-shaped clips, hook clips), rivets, adhesive strips, or bolt installation points, used to fix the carpet to the vehicle floor sheet metal;
- Edge sealing/trim: Some models add rubber strips or fabric sealing on the edges of the carpet to prevent frayed edges and improve sealing;
- Integrated accessories (depending on the model): Such as wear-resistant sheets in the footwell area, opening guards for the shift area, sensor openings for seat belts, or wire routing channels, etc.;
- Structural components (sound insulation foam, shock absorption pads, floor sheet metal) are part of the vehicle chassis system and are not included in the carpet assembly itself.

The core functions of the automotive carpet assembly (original factory standard, not foot mats) are: protecting the chassis sheet metal, providing sound insulation, shock absorption, and heat insulation.

- Protective function: Prevents entry of dirt, water, and corrosive substances from the soles of shoes, directly protecting the metal floor of the vehicle, and delaying rust;
- Sound insulation and noise reduction: Its composite structure (including plush surface layer, EVA/PU foam or non-woven fabric sound-absorbing layer) can absorb tire noise, engine vibration, and mid-to-low frequency noise, improving the interior quietness;
- Comfort enhancement: The cushion layer alleviates the vibrations transmitted from the road surface, and in summer, it blocks the heat from the chassis, improving the foot sensation and temperature environment;
- Auxiliary fixation and decoration: As the base layer of the interior, it works with threshold trim, pedals, etc., to achieve sealing and aesthetics. Some integrate seat height adjusters or wire routing protection.

This component is a key component of the vehicle's acoustic and durability design. It is usually laminated with sound insulation foam and shock absorption pads on the vehicle sheet metal, not detachable foot mats (the latter are additional protective layers).
Carpet assembly failures typically manifest as dampness and mold, loosening and shifting, abnormal sounds, wire corrosion or odors. Common causes include leakage from the air conditioning/awning, aging seals, improper installation or damage to the fixation components, rather than the carpet itself being an independent faulty component (carpets are usually installed pieces, not modular assemblies).

- If the carpet is damp: The first step is to check for blockages in the drainage pipes of the air conditioning evaporator box (especially water accumulation in the rear footwell), aging sealing of the window/door/defroster glass, or leakage from the heating water tank/heater core (if the liquid has a sweet or sticky taste, it may be antifreeze); it is necessary to remove the carpet, dry it thoroughly, remove mold, and repair the source. Otherwise, it is prone to corroding wires (such as BCM, body control module) or triggering fault codes (such as B1633 related to body electronics, but not specific to the carpet).

- If the carpet is loose or makes abnormal sounds: Check if the carpet clips, edge sealing components are broken or detached, or if the base insulation foam shifts or is not evenly compacted; re-level and reinstall clips or apply sound-absorbing tape to alleviate the problem. Hard改装 floor is more likely to produce abnormal sounds due to gaps.

- If the carpet is damaged or worn: Minor damage can be repaired by cutting out the damaged area, attaching a patch, and smoothing the fibers. For severe damage, it is recommended to replace the entire carpet (remove the seats and interior, pay attention to protecting wires and seat belt anchor points). If a fault code is reported after installation: The carpet itself does not trigger an ECU fault, but if during the disassembly and reassembly process, there is contact failure of seat sensors, seat belt plugs, BCM wiring harness or ground wires (such as rust caused by water accumulation), it may trigger codes like B1633 (body circuit), etc. Use a diagnostic tool to read the codes and check the connection of the corresponding wiring harness.
If it is not due to waterlogging or obvious leakage, a simple "assembly fault" is mostly caused by improper installation or failure of fixation. It is recommended to first identify the specific phenomenon (wet? noisy? rotten? loose?) and then handle it specifically; for chassis drainage modifications (such as the extended duct for the RS5), they are specific vehicle model solutions and not universal. If there is a suspicion of circuit damage (such as a strange smell + electronic malfunction), do not power on by yourself. Wait for it to dry and then have it repaired by a professional.
