What is the right-side body controller of the car?

The Right Body Control Module (RBCM) is a domain controller responsible for managing the right side of the vehicle and some core electrical functions of the entire vehicle. It is one of the "nerve centers" of the vehicle body electronic system.
In traditional vehicles, the Body Control Module (BCM) is usually integrated as a whole and does not strictly distinguish between left and right sides; however, in modern domain architecture vehicles such as Tesla Model 3/Y, the Right Body Control Module (RBCM) is specifically responsible for the right side doors (windows, locks, rearview mirrors), right front/rear seats (heating/adjustment/safety belt detection), air conditioning system (HVAC fan/blower/temperature control), right rear tail lights, trunk lock/lights, rear defrosting, PTC heating, right-side electronic parking (EPB) and automatic parking ultrasonic radar (APA), etc.
It is not a simple "left-side mirror image" - the RBCM often integrates more high-load functions (such as air conditioning and APA), uses a higher-performance MCU (such as Renesas RH850), and undertakes part of the vehicle's power distribution and signal relay tasks.
The functions are coordinated with other ECU (such as safety and power domains) through CAN/LIN buses to achieve comfort, convenience, and some safety control (such as automatic unlocking in case of collision, seat belt reminder).
The position is usually below the dashboard on the right side or within the passenger side trim, and it is the key right half control unit in the vehicle body domain's "position partition" (rather than function partition) architecture.
There are significant differences in architectures among different brands: traditional vehicles (such as Volkswagen, Toyota) mostly use a single BCM; new forces (such as Tesla, NIO) tend to use left-right domain division, where the RBCM assumes asymmetric but highly integrated comprehensive control responsibilities.
The Right Body Control Module (RBCM) is a part of the vehicle body domain controller, specifically responsible for managing the right side of the vehicle and rear-related electrical loads and comfort/safety functions, and does not independently control the left side or power system.
Right Body Control: Controls the up and down movement of the right front/rear windows, the locking of the right front/rear doors, the adjustment of the right exterior rearview mirror (including heating/folding/anti-glare), the right front/rear seats (adjustment/heating/ventilation), the wiring and sensor signal processing of the right front/rear doors (such as seat belt latch detection).
Tail and rear load management: Controls the right tail lights, brake lights, reverse lights, license plate lights, rear fog lights, trunk/latch lock and external lighting; some models (such as Tesla Model 3) also integrate rear ultrasonic radar, electric parking brake (EPB) control.
Air conditioning and thermal management core (for specific models such as Model 3): Directly drives the fan, mode/temperature fan motor, processes temperature/humidity/air quality sensor signals, and is the main control unit of the HVAC system.
Power distribution and signal routing: Provides power management for right-side electrical appliances (such as OCS, rear entertainment, RCM, etc.) and serves as a "passthrough" hub for the wiring (reducing the complexity of vehicle wiring).
Integrated auxiliary functions: In some high-level architectures (such as Tesla), the RBCM may integrate 12-channel radar control for automatic parking assistance (APA), PTC heating, rear defrosting, etc.
Please note: Traditional vehicles mostly use a single central BCM with left-right symmetrical distribution; modern domain architecture vehicles (such as Tesla, Xpeng, Guangzhou Geely Xingling) have clearly divided left-right BCMs, and the RBCM is not a "mirror left BCM", but is assigned responsibilities based on function loads (such as air conditioning, rear system) rather than simply physical location. If the vehicle does not have a "right-side exclusive BCM", its functions are managed by the central or left BCM. The term "right-side vehicle body controller" is not a standard one. Usually, a vehicle only has one vehicle body control module (BCM). If the malfunction only affects the right-side functions, it might be a problem with the related wiring, module, or power supply rather than the BCM itself being damaged.
Common manifestations: failure of right-side turn signals, headlights, windshield wipers (if single-sided), right front/back window raising/lowering, right door lock, right rearview mirror adjustment or heating, or failure of the high-mounted brake lights (often controlled by the BCM) to light up.
Possible causes: water ingress or short circuit in the right-side wiring, burned-out fuse (specific for right-side lights/windows), corrosion of connectors, damage to the right-side output channel of the BCM, or failure of a sub-module communicating with it (such as the right door control module).
Diagnostic suggestions: Use an OBD decoder to read the fault codes (such as U04xx communication loss, B1xxx vehicle electrical code), check the related fuses and grounding on the right side, and observe if there is an accompanying dashboard warning (such as "right-side light failure"); Do not disassemble the BCM by yourself. Most require professional equipment to confirm whether it is a fault of the module itself or an external issue.
Safety reminder: If the right-side brake lights, turn signals, or headlights fail, stop using the vehicle immediately and repair it. This is a major safety hazard.
If the vehicle is clearly labeled as having a "right-side vehicle body controller" (such as some commercial vehicles or those with a regional control architecture), please provide the model year and brand to accurately locate it. Most family sedans have an integrated BCM for the entire vehicle, and the malfunction usually affects multiple sides, not just the "right side".
