The function of radial tires for automobiles

"Radial tires" usually refer to the "radial tires" (Radial Tire), whose cord fabric layer is arranged radially (i.e., from the sidewall through the center of the tread to the other sidewall), and it is the mainstream tire structure used by most passenger cars and commercial vehicles at present. It is opposite to "cross-ply tires" and has better performance.
Regarding the function of "automobile radial tires", it is actually the same as that of ordinary tires, but due to its structural characteristics, it has the following advantages:
The core function of radial tires
‌Supporting vehicle weight‌: Bearing the entire vehicle and load, and dispersing pressure through the high-strength cord fabric layer and rubber structure.
‌Transmitting power and braking force‌: Effectively transmitting the engine power and braking force through the friction between the tire tread and the ground.
‌Buffering vibrations and improving comfort‌: The radial structure makes the sidewall softer, which can better absorb road impacts and improve riding comfort.
‌Maintaining driving stability and handling performance‌: The tire tread has high rigidity, and the ground contact area is uniform. It has strong grip and small deformation during cornering and high-speed driving.
‌Reducing rolling resistance and saving fuel consumption‌: The cord fabric layer has less friction, resulting in low rolling resistance, which helps with fuel economy.
‌Adapting to various road conditions‌: Combined with different tread designs, it can be adapted to urban, highway, slippery, and even mild off-road scenarios.
The statement "automobile radial tire failure" may refer to the abnormal or damage that occurs to radial tires during use. Radial tires are the tire structure type currently used by the vast majority of passenger cars, with their cord fabric layer arranged radially (at a 90° angle to the tire crown center line), and they have the advantages of low rolling resistance, good wear resistance, and strong grip.
According to public information, combined with the current time (May 2026) and common failure modes, the following are the main failure types and handling suggestions for radial tires:
‌Common radial tire failures and response measures
‌Blistering
‌Reason: The sidewall or shoulder of the tire is subjected to severe impact (such as hitting a curb or pothole).
‌Risk: Cord breaks, and it is highly likely to blow out at high speed.
‌Handling: Must be replaced immediately; do not repair.
‌Puncture/ Hole
‌Reason: The tread is punctured by nails, screws, etc., sharp objects.
‌Handling suggestions:
If the hole diameter ≤ 6mm and is located in the center of the tread, it can be repaired;
If the same tire has been patched more than 3 times, or the patching location is on the shoulder or sidewall, it should be replaced.
‌Abnormal wear
‌Single-sided wear: The wheel caster angle is incorrect, requiring four-wheel alignment.
‌Central wear: The tire pressure is too high, and it should be adjusted to the manufacturer's recommended value (usually 2.0–2.5 bar).
‌Patchy wear: The tire has poor dynamic balance, requiring dynamic balancing.
‌Tread noise (such as "clicking sound")
‌Possible reasons: Stones are stuck in the tread pattern, or the tread is deformed or blistered.
‌Handling: Clear the stones; if the tread is deformed or blistered, it is recommended to replace the tire.
‌Low-pitched "clicking" sound or shaking
‌Possible reasons: Insufficient tire pressure, tire aging, deformation of the wheel hub, or wear of the wheel hub bearing.
‌Recommendation: Check tire pressure, tire condition, and perform four-wheel alignment and dynamic balancing.
‌Prevention and daily maintenance suggestions
‌Check tire pressure monthly (cold tire condition), referring to the standard value indicated on the door frame or the manual.
‌Perform tire rotation every 10,000 kilometers to balance wear.
‌Avoid driving through potholes or curb edges at high speed, especially for low-profile tires which are more prone to damage.
‌Consider replacing tires every 60,000 kilometers or 2 years (whichever comes first), even if the tread appears intact.
‌Regularly clean the stones on the tread surface to prevent long-term embedding that causes internal structure damage. Important Reminder: If the tire develops bulges, exposes the cord, undergoes severe deformation, or has been patched multiple times, do not continue to use it. It should be replaced immediately to ensure driving safety. If you need a more detailed diagnosis, it is recommended that you visit a professional repair shop for a four-wheel alignment, dynamic balance check, and a comprehensive inspection of the tires.
