What is a car oil filter element

Oil filter, also known as oil strainer. It is used to remove impurities such as dust, metal particles, carbon deposits and soot particles from engine oil, protecting the engine.
Oil filters can be classified into full-flow and cross-flow types. The full-flow filter is connected in series between the oil pump and the main oil passage, thus capable of filtering all the lubricating oil entering the main oil passage. The diverter cleaner is connected in parallel with the main oil passage and only filters part of the lubricating oil sent out by the oil pump. During the operation of the engine, metal shavings, dust, carbon deposits oxidized at high temperatures, gel-like precipitates, water and other substances are constantly mixed into the lubricating oil. The function of the oil filter is to filter out these mechanical impurities and gums, keep the lubricating oil clean and extend its service life. The oil filter should have strong filtering capacity, low flow resistance and long service life. In a general lubrication system, several filters with different filtration capabilities are installed - the strainer, the coarse filter and the fine filter - which are respectively connected in parallel or series in the main oil passage. The one connected in series with the main oil passage is called a full-flow filter, through which all the lubricating oil is filtered during engine operation; the one connected in parallel with it is called a split-flow filter. Among them, the coarse filter is connected in series in the main oil passage and is of full flow type. The fine filter is connected in parallel in the main oil passage and is of the split type. Modern car engines generally only have a strainer and a full-flow oil filter. The coarse filter removes impurities with a particle size of 0.05mm or more from the engine oil, while the fine filter is used to remove fine impurities with a particle size of 0.001mm or more.
Filter paper: The requirements for filter paper in oil filters are higher than those in air filters. This is mainly because the temperature of the oil varies from 0 to 300 degrees. Under drastic temperature changes, the concentration of the oil also changes accordingly, which will affect the filtration flow rate of the oil. The filter paper of a high-quality oil filter should be capable of filtering impurities under drastic temperature changes while ensuring sufficient flow.

Backflow suppression valve: Only available in high-quality oil filters. When the engine is turned off, it can prevent the oil filter from drying out. When the engine is reignited, it immediately generates pressure to supply engine oil for lubrication. (Also known as a check valve
Relief valve: Only available in high-quality oil filters. When the external temperature drops to a certain specific value or when the oil filter exceeds its normal service life, the relief valve will open under special pressure, allowing unfiltered oil to flow directly into the engine. Even so, impurities in the engine oil will enter the engine together, but compared with the damage caused by the absence of engine oil in the engine, such damage is much smaller. Under normal circumstances, the various components inside an engine operate normally through the lubrication of engine oil. However, metal debris produced by the operation of the components, dust that enters, carbon deposits oxidized at high temperatures, and some water vapor will constantly mix into the engine oil. Over time, the service life of the engine oil will be reduced, and in severe cases, it may affect the normal operation of the engine.
Therefore, at this point, the role of the oil filter comes into play. Simply put, the main function of an oil filter is to filter out the vast majority of impurities in the engine oil, keep the oil clean and extend its normal service life. In addition, the oil filter should also have strong filtering capacity, low flow resistance and long service life.
There are two major drawbacks to the oil filters available on the market, but the new product has made up for them. Therefore, it is necessary to use the new product, the strong magnetic oil filter.
Disadvantage one: It can only filter out 60% of the impurities in the engine oil, with a low filtration efficiency.
This is because the current oil filters rely on a single paper filter element hole to intercept and filter out harmful impurities in the oil. The smaller the micro-holes of the filter paper, the better the filtration effect, but the poorer the oil's ability to pass through. To address the contradiction that the smallest particles of impurities can be filtered out on the same micro-pore of the filter paper while also ensuring that a sufficient amount of engine oil supplied to the engine can pass through this micro-pore. According to the tests conducted by the Filter Branch of the National Internal Combustion Engine Industry Association using the ISO4548 international standard test method for oil filter filtration efficiency, even the best oil filters on the market can only be designed to remove 60% of the impurities in the oil. This is the maximum filtration value obtained after thousands of experiments. In actual use, there are still 40% of harmful impurities that cannot be effectively filtered out by paper filter elements. Among these 40% of impurities, due to the relatively fine and hard nature of ferromagnetic impurities, they are in the majority and thus cause the greatest damage to the engine.
Disadvantage 2: The filtration efficiency is zero under special conditions.
The currently used oil filters all have bypass valves at the bottom of the paper filter element. This is a direct oil flow channel designed during the design process to ensure that the engine oil can smoothly circulate back to the engine when the engine is cold started and the oil viscosity is high or the paper filter element is partially or completely blocked. When the bypass valve of the engine oil is opened under the pressure of the oil pump, the engine oil that circulates back to the engine through the bypass valve not only fails to be filtered by the paper filter element, but also the large particles of impurities that were originally filtered out by the paper filter element will be re-flushed back into the engine through the bypass valve, causing continuous secondary wear to the engine. Therefore, the oil filters used on the market Under special conditions, it fundamentally plays a filtering role, so the filtering efficiency at this time is zero.
From the above two drawbacks, it can be seen that the currently used oil filters cannot permanently filter impurities larger or smaller than the micro-pores of the paper filter element. They can only permanently remove impurities equivalent to the micro-pores of the paper filter element and embedded in them. Therefore, the filtration efficiency is extremely low.
