The Function of the Front Fender of a Car

The front fender of a car serves as an important covering component above the wheels. It not only optimizes aerodynamics and protects the vehicle's body parts, but is also a key component for maintaining the integrity of the vehicle's appearance. During daily use, it is prone to damage from collisions, scratches, and long-term stress, resulting in various malfunctions. The following are the specific manifestations and targeted solutions for common faults of the front fender.
Deformation and Dents: Choose the appropriate repair method based on the degree of deformation
Dents are the most common fault of the front fender, often caused by collisions, hard objects scraping, or falling objects from high places. For different degrees of dents, differentiated repair methods should be adopted.
Minor Dents (not affecting the paint surface): If the dent diameter is smaller than the size of your palm and the paint surface is undamaged, you can prioritize non-destructive repair techniques. Use an electro-suction pad to adsorb the center of the dent, and apply uniform force to pull and gradually restore the sheet metal; for plastic front fenders, you can also combine with 60°C hot water to soften the material and improve the repair effect.
Moderate Dents (damaging the paint surface but without tearing): When a dent is accompanied by paint cracking but the sheet metal is not torn, a sheet metal repair process is required. First, use the pulling system of the shape repair machine to restore the dent as a whole, then use a pad from the inside to support and a hammer from the outside to strike, finely leveling the local protrusions; then perform sanding, grinding, and painting to ensure the paint surface matches the vehicle color.
Severe Dents (sheet metal tearing or large-scale deformation): If the sheet metal has a tear of more than 10 centimeters or is in a "winding" shape of deformation, attempting to repair it forcefully will lead to a decrease in structural strength and may cause functional failures such as shaking at high speeds. In such cases, it is recommended to replace the original factory parts or those that meet OE standards. After replacement, the gap should be adjusted to the industry standard range of 3 - 5mm.
Loose and Detached: Investigate the root cause of the fixation structure
The front fender loosening and detachment are mostly caused by the failure of fixation components. If not addressed promptly, it may cause abnormal noises during driving or even damage to the tires when scraping them.
Loose Fasteners/Clips: This is the most common cause. First, lift the vehicle, remove the tires, and inspect the fixing screws and clips inside the fender. If the screws are loose, tighten them according to the specified torque; if the clips are broken or deformed, replace the new clips, and pay attention to aligning the positioning holes when installing to ensure a secure fit.
Sheet Metal Shift: If the vehicle has experienced a collision, it may cause the fender installation base to deform, leading to loosening. At this time, use sheet metal correction equipment to stretch and reset the base, adjust the relative positions of the fender, the door, and the bumper, and ensure the gap is uniform before fixing the screws.
Cracks and Damage: Handle according to location and severity
Front fender cracks are mostly caused by material aging, severe collisions, or concentrated long-term stress, and require repair or replacement based on the location and severity of the crack.
Minor Cracks (plastic material): For small cracks in plastic front fenders, plastic welding technology can be used for repair. After welding, smooth the surface and apply paint; if the crack does not affect the structure, a special plastic filler can be used for filling and repair.
Severe Cracks or Metal Tearing: If the crack depth exceeds one-third of the sheet metal thickness or the metal plate tears, it is recommended to replace the new part. When replacing, note that the front fender is a screw-connected component, and during disassembly, avoid damaging surrounding engine covers, bumpers, etc.
Daily Maintenance: Prevent faults from occurring in advance
In addition to repairing after a fault occurs, daily maintenance can effectively reduce the probability of front fender faults. During each car wash, clean the inner side of the fender of accumulated dirt to prevent corrosion of the sheet metal or accelerated aging of the plastic parts; check the tightness of the fixing screws and clips once every six months, and confirm that the fender is securely installed before long-distance driving; if you find uneven gaps between the fender and the door, bumper, etc., promptly check for any shifting or failure of the fixation components, and detect and handle them early.
