The core function of an automotive spark plug is to convert high voltage electricity into an electric spark, which ignites the fuel and air mixture in the engine cylinder, thereby initiating the combustion process and providing power for the vehicle.
Core ignition function: The spark plug, as a key component of the ignition system in a gasoline engine, receives high voltage electricity from the ignition coil. In the gap between the central electrode and the side electrode, it generates a high-temperature electric spark (up to 2000-3000°C), instantly igniting the combustible mixture in the cylinder.
Ensuring engine operation: This ignition process is the foundation of a gasoline engine's operation. The energy from combustion drives the piston to move, propelling the vehicle forward; without the effective ignition provided by the spark plug, the engine will not function properly.
Impact on performance and emissions: The ignition stability, timing, and intensity of the spark plug directly affect the engine's power output, fuel economy, and exhaust emissions levels.
When the spark plug of a car is damaged, the most obvious symptoms include difficulty starting the engine, unstable idle or shaking, lack of acceleration power, increased fuel consumption, and abnormal exhaust emissions.
These symptoms all result from the inability of the spark plug to ignite properly, causing insufficient combustion in the engine.
Main fault symptoms
- Difficulty starting: The vehicle has trouble starting or cannot start at all. This is the most direct manifestation of a spark plug failure.

- Decreased power (acceleration weakness): Due to reduced ignition efficiency, the fuel is not fully burned, resulting in a weakened output power. Specifically, it feels weak when accelerating, and there is a lack of power when climbing hills or overtaking.
- Increased fuel consumption: Inefficient combustion means that the fuel is not effectively utilized, and some of it is wasted and expelled, resulting in a significant increase in fuel consumption.
- Abnormal exhaust emissions: Incomplete combustion produces more harmful substances, which may cause black smoke from the exhaust pipe and exceed the standard in exhaust emissions tests.
- Other important symptoms and manifestations:
- Abnormal noise: Spark plug failure (especially when the calorific value is mismatched or severely damaged) may cause irregular "thumping" knocking sounds during engine operation, which may be more noticeable when accelerating. Unintentional engine shutdown and loss of power during driving: In severe cases, a spark plug problem may cause the engine to suddenly stall at idle or while in motion, or to suddenly feel a lack of power when needed. The dashboard warning light comes on: The engine electronic control system of modern cars may detect ignition-related faults, thereby triggering the engine fault indicator light (such as the EPC light) to illuminate, alerting the owner to conduct an inspection.
