The car windshield wiper switch is the core device that controls the working state of the wipers. Its main functions are to turn on, off the wipers, and adjust their scraping speed and mode to adapt to different weather conditions, ensuring that the driver has a clear view of the front, and enhancing driving safety.
According to the design of mainstream vehicles, the wiper switch is usually controlled by a lever-type or knob-type device. Some electric vehicle models are operated through the central control touchscreen. The main functional positions and their functions are as follows:
Common positions and functions of the wiper switch
OFF (Off)
When the switch is turned to or rotated to the "OFF" position, the wipers stop working completely. This is the standard operation when it rains or when entering a car wash.
MIST / INT (Pulse / Intermittent)
MIST (Pulse): Lightly press or tap once, the wipers only scrape once, suitable for removing small amounts of water droplets, dust, or insect corpses on the windshield.
INT (Intermittent): The wipers automatically scrape at the set interval time (such as scraping once, pausing for a few seconds), suitable for light rain or drizzle weather. Some models allow rotating the knob to adjust the intermittent frequency.
LO (Low Speed) and HI (High Speed)
LO: The wipers scrape continuously at a lower speed, suitable for moderate rain weather.
HI: The wipers scrape continuously at the highest speed, suitable for heavy rain or heavy rain, ensuring rapid removal of a large amount of rainwater.
AUTO (Auto)
This mode relies on the vehicle's rain sensor to automatically detect the rain intensity and adjust the scraping frequency. When it rains heavily, the speed is increased, and when it rains lightly or stops, the speed is reduced or paused. No manual intervention is required, enhancing driving convenience. To turn off this function, the switch should be turned back to "OFF" or exited from the automatic mode in a specific way.
REAR Wiper Control (Rear)
Some models have an independent control position for the rear windshield wipers on the lever (such as "ON/OFF" or a rotating knob) to turn on or off the rear wipers.
Glass Water Spray Function
This is triggered by pulling the handle inward (or the button on the lever) to activate the wipers once or continuously, and the wipers will automatically start working in coordination with the glass water to clean the windshield.
Differences in operation among different vehicle models
Japanese Cars (such as Toyota, Honda): Usually use a circular knob, rotate to "OFF" to turn off.
German Cars (such as Volkswagen, Audi): Usually use a lever-type, push the lever to the top and hold for 1-2 seconds, confirm the dashboard prompt "Auto Wiper Off" before releasing.
Luxury Brands (such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW): May use an independent button, need to hold for 2 seconds to turn off the automatic mode.
Electric Vehicles (such as Tesla, BYD): Enter "Vehicle Settings" → "Driving Assistance" → turn off the "Automatic Wiper" switch through the central control screen.
Note: There may be slight differences in the labels and operation logic among different vehicle models. For the most accurate operation method, please refer to the vehicle user manual. If the rear wipers still start automatically after being turned off, it may be that the rain sensor is blocked by dirt. It is recommended to clean the sensor or visit a professional service center for inspection.
