The function of the rear door of a car

The rear door of a car is an important part of the vehicle's rear section. Its main function is to provide a passage for passengers to enter and exit the vehicle, and to facilitate the loading or removal of luggage and other items. Depending on the type and design of the vehicle, the specific functions and opening methods of the rear door vary. Main function
Passenger Accessory Door: As the main entrance and exit for rear passengers, the design of the rear door directly affects the convenience and comfort of riding. The traditional sliding door rotates outward around a hinge, with an opening angle typically ranging from 60° to 90°, ensuring smooth entry and exit for passengers.
Rear Door Opening: For sedan, SUV, MPV and other vehicle models, the rear door usually refers to the rear tailgate (or tailgate), located at the rear of the vehicle, used to open the trunk or cargo compartment, facilitating the storage and retrieval of items. Some models' tailgates are integrated with the rear windshield, and when opened, the entire part is lifted up, forming a large opening, which is convenient for transporting large items.
Safety and Convenience Control: The rear door integrates multiple control functions, such as:
Window Control: Most vehicles have window control buttons on the inner side of the rear door, which can independently control the opening and closing of the rear window.
Child Safety Lock: The rear door usually has a child lock, which makes it impossible to open the door from the inside once activated, and in some models, it is also impossible to open from the outside. This ensures the safety of children during rides.
Door Lock Control: The door is equipped with a lock/unlock switch, which can be linked with other vehicle doors to achieve one-click locking or unlocking, enhancing driving safety.
Rear Door Opening: Some models (such as Audi A6L) have a trunk lid switch on the rear door, allowing rear passengers to directly open the tailgate.
When the rear door of a car malfunctions and cannot be opened or closed normally, it is a common problem, which may be caused by various mechanical, electronic or environmental factors. The following are the common causes and corresponding solutions based on the latest information, and it is recommended to check and troubleshoot in order:
Common Causes and Solutions
Child Safety Lock Activated
This is the most common and easily overlooked reason. Many vehicles have child safety locks on the rear door, once activated, the door cannot be opened from the inside, and in some models, it is also impossible to open from the outside.
Solution: Open the front door and check if there is a child lock switch indicator (usually "LOCK" or a child pattern) on the side of the rear door (usually on the door frame or door panel), and turn it to "closed" or "unlock" position.
Door Handle or Pull Cord Damaged
The pull cord connecting the inner/outer handles of the door may be worn, broken or due to long-term use, causing the handle to fail to trigger the door lock mechanism.
Solution: Try pulling the handle from both inside and outside, feeling for any abnormal looseness or no resistance. If it is confirmed that the pull cord is the problem, remove the door panel and check and replace the pull cord or handle assembly.
Door Lock Mechanism Failure
The mechanical structure inside the door lock (such as the lock core, lock block, connecting rod) may be stuck or damaged due to dust accumulation, rust, wear or collision.
Solution: Try spraying a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) on the lock core and operate the handle repeatedly to try to loosen it. If ineffective, a professional should disassemble and repair or replace the entire door lock assembly.
Sealant Strip Aging or Deformation
The rubber sealant strip around the door may age, harden or deform over time, causing excessive adhesion to the door frame, making the door "stuck" and difficult to open.
Solution: Check if the sealant strip is cracked, deformed or sticky. A temporary solution can be to apply a small amount of rubber protection agent, but the long-term solution is to replace the new sealant strip.
Door Hinge (Hinge) Rust or Loosening
Loose or rusted hinges screws can cause the door to sink, shift, and affect the smoothness of opening and closing, and even get stuck.
Solution: Observe if the gap between the door and the vehicle body is uniform. If there is sagging or abnormal noise, use a tool to tighten the hinge screws and remove rust from the damaged area and apply lubricating grease.
Door Limit Switch Failure
The limit switch is responsible for controlling the opening angle of the door. If damaged, the door may not fully open or get stuck during the opening process, making abnormal sounds or noises.
Solution: If you hear a "click" sound or feel a jam when opening the car door, it is likely a limit switch issue and a new part needs to be replaced.
Electronic control system failure
This involves electronic components such as the central locking system, remote key, and door control module. Issues such as a dead remote key battery, locked central locking, short circuits in the wiring, or a faulty control module can all cause the door to fail to respond.
Solution:
Try using a mechanical key to open the door, or replace the remote key battery.
Press the central locking switch on the driver's side door panel to ensure all doors are unlocked.
If this does not work, use a professional diagnostic tool to read the fault code and have the repair shop handle it.
Door frame deformation
If the vehicle has experienced a side collision or, the door frame may have slightly deformed, causing uneven gaps between the door and the door frame, making the door unable to close or open properly.
Solution:
Observe if the door is aligned with other parts of the vehicle body. Minor deformation can be corrected by a professional sheet metal worker, while severe deformation requires replacing the entire door assembly.
Special circumstances handling (the door cannot be opened from either inside or outside)
If the door cannot be opened from either inside or outside, try:
• Lightly tap the door panel (not on the glass) with your palm or a rubber hammer. Sometimes this can the misaligned lock block.
• Remove the door panel trim from the inside of the vehicle and manually turn the door lock mechanism (requires some manual dexterity to avoid damaging the latch).
• Use the car window to operate: Lower the window and use a thin, long hook to catch the inner pull rope or lock tongue and try to manually unlock it.
