The function of the tensioner pulley
The core function of the tensioner pulley is to automatically adjust the tension of the belt, ensuring that the belt is always in the optimal working condition. It uses internal springs or hydraulic mechanisms to automatically compensate for tension based on the belt's elongation or wear, thereby:
Preventing the belt from slipping or skipping teeth due to being too loose;
Avoiding the belt from accelerating wear or increasing the engine load due to being too tight;

Due to the aging of the internal damping elements and springs, the lifespan of the tensioner pulley is usually similar to that of the belt. It is recommended to replace the belt along with it to avoid subsequent failures.
The function of the idler pulley
The main function of the idler pulley is to change the transmission path of the belt, rather than transmitting power or adjusting tension. Its specific functions include:
Changing the belt direction: enabling the belt to bypass complex engine components (such as air conditioning compressors, water pumps, generators, etc.);
Increasing the wrap angle: increasing the contact area between the belt and the pulley, improving transmission efficiency, and reducing the risk of slipping;
Reducing belt vibration: providing intermediate support in long-distance transmission, making the belt run more smoothly;
Not changing the transmission ratio: the idler pulley only changes direction, without affecting the proportion of power transmission.
The idler pulley is usually installed between two driving or driven pulleys. When the bearings of the idler pulley wear out, there may be abnormal sounds or vibrations, which require timely replacement.

Causing engine timing disorder: The tensioner pulley is responsible for maintaining the appropriate tension of the belt. This will cause severe timing disruptions, leading to engine shaking, ignition difficulties, and even vehicle inability to start.

The tension of the timing belt connecting the crankshaft and camshaft becomes out of control, causing the opening and closing times of the intake and exhaust valves to be out of sync with the piston movement, potentially resulting in severe accidents such as valves being bent or broken by the piston, causing extensive damage to engine internal parts (such as valves, valve seats, pistons, etc.), with extremely high repair costs and even engine.
Causing abnormal generator power generation: The generator is driven by the belt. Damage to the tensioner pulley causes the belt to slip or have insufficient tension, preventing the generator from operating at a stable speed, resulting in insufficient power generation or unstable output. This will directly affect the normal operation of interior electrical equipment (such as lights, audio) and cause the battery to fail to be fully charged, potentially leading to vehicle breakdowns due to insufficient power during driving over time.
Causing engine overheating: The generator belt usually also drives the water pump. Damage to the tensioner pulley causes the belt to slip or have insufficient tension, resulting in poor circulation of coolant and the inability of the engine to effectively dissipate heat, causing engine overheating. Continuous high temperatures will exacerbate the wear of engine internal parts and even lead to mechanical failures such as cylinder wall pulling and cylinder head deformation.
Producing abnormal noises and accelerating: The damaged tensioner pulley will produce obvious abnormal sounds, especially when the vehicle accelerates sharply or reaches a speed of around 1500 rpm, the noise will significantly increase. At the same time, due to the decreased power transmission efficiency, the vehicle may experience accelerating. Accelerated belt wear and system failure: When the belt is in a slack state, it will have abnormal friction with the pulley, causing its wear rate to far exceed the normal level and requiring early replacement. In extreme cases, if the tensioning pulley experiences a bearing seizure or fracture, the belt will completely fail to operate, leading to a complete failure of related systems (such as generators, water pumps, etc.).
In conclusion, although the tensioning pulley of the generator is a small component, its damage can affect the entire system, seriously impacting the vehicle's power performance, economy, and safety.
