The function of the automotive air flow meter

The air flow meter is a key sensor in the electronic control system of an automobile engine. Its core function is to measure the air flow entering the engine in real time and convert this data into an electrical signal to transmit it to the engine control unit (ECU), which serves as the fundamental basis for the ECU to calculate the fuel injection volume and optimize the air-fuel ratio.
The core function of the air flow meter
Precisely control the fuel injection volume and maintain the ideal air-fuel ratio
The engine combustion requires maintaining the theoretical air-fuel ratio (approximately 14.7:1). The intake air volume data provided by the air flow meter is the "most direct and accurate" basis for the ECU to calculate the required fuel injection volume. The ECU precisely controls the fuel injection pulse width based on this data to ensure that the fuel and air are mixed at the optimal ratio, thereby ensuring combustion efficiency. If the data is inaccurate, it will result in either excessive fuel mixture (increased fuel consumption and increased carbon deposits) or insufficient fuel mixture (decreased power and prone to stalling).
Optimize engine power and fuel consumption
During acceleration and other heavy-load conditions, the air flow meter can quickly respond to the sudden increase in intake air volume, allowing the ECU to immediately increase the fuel injection volume to provide sufficient power. During cruising or idle, it reduces the fuel injection volume to lower fuel consumption. Its response speed directly affects the driving experience. For example, the response time of the hot film type flow meter is usually within 0.1 seconds, ensuring smooth power connection.
Ensure emission compliance
The combustion efficiency directly determines the exhaust emission level. The accurate data from the air flow meter ensures that the fuel is fully burned, effectively reducing the emission of harmful substances such as carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC). If the sensor fails and causes excessive fuel mixture, the exhaust will emit black smoke, and the vehicle will fail the annual inspection.
Adapt to complex conditions and stabilize engine operation
Whether it is a slight intake air fluctuation at idle or a large amount of intake air during high-speed cruising, the air flow meter can monitor and feedback to the ECU in real time, ensuring that the engine can maintain stable operation under various conditions and avoid stalling or power interruption.
Common fault manifestations
When the air flow meter is clogged with carbon deposits, damaged, or has a wiring fault, it usually causes the following symptoms:
‌Idle instability or shaking‌: The engine shakes noticeably when idling, as the ECU receives incorrect intake air signals, causing inaccurate fuel injection volume control.
‌Weak acceleration or "jerkiness"‌: After stepping on the accelerator, the power response is slow, and overtaking is difficult.
‌Abnormally high fuel consumption‌: In driving habits and road conditions unchanged, fuel consumption significantly increases (possibly by 10%-20%).
‌Exhaust emits black smoke and exceeds emission standards‌: Inadequate combustion is the cause.
‌Engine fault light turns on‌: The ECU will store fault codes such as "P0100-P0104" related to the air flow meter.
Maintenance suggestions
‌Regular inspection‌: It is recommended to inspect the air flow meter every 2-30,000 kilometers, especially for vehicles driven on dusty roads.
‌Professional cleaning‌: If there is carbon buildup, use a dedicated air flow meter cleaning agent for cleaning. Do not use carburetor cleaning agents, as they may corrode the sensitive hot film or hot wire components.
‌Replace parts‌: If the sensor is damaged, it is recommended to replace it with original or brand-name genuine parts. Sub-brand parts often cannot guarantee accuracy and lifespan.
The air flow meter (MAF sensor) is a core component of the engine's electronic control system, responsible for measuring the air flow entering the engine and providing the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) with the key basis for calculating the fuel injection volume. Once it fails, it will cause an imbalance in the fuel mixture ratio, leading to a series of engine operation abnormalities.
The following are common symptoms when the air flow meter fails:
‌Idle instability‌: The engine shakes noticeably when idling, as the ECU receives incorrect intake air signals, causing inaccurate fuel injection volume control. ‌Acceleration weakness and sluggish power‌: After stepping on the accelerator, the vehicle responds slowly and accelerates slowly, especially in the 1500-2000 rpm range, feeling "lacking in power". This is because the ECU misjudges the intake air volume and reduces fuel injection, resulting in an overly稀薄 mixture.
‌Abnormal increase in fuel consumption‌: If the sensor signal is too large, the ECU will mistakenly believe that the engine is in a high-load state, thereby increasing fuel injection, causing an overly concentrated mixture, and the fuel cannot be fully combusted, resulting in a significant increase in fuel consumption. Some models will have a "SERVICE ENGINE" warning light on the dashboard.
‌Exhaust pipe emits black smoke‌: When the mixture is too concentrated, a large amount of unburned carbon particles are discharged with the exhaust gas, forming obvious black smoke. This not only pollutes the environment but also indicates poor combustion efficiency.
‌Intermittent engine stalling and engine vibration‌: When driving at high speed (usually over 120 km/h), the sensor signal output is unstable, which may cause the ECU to suddenly reduce fuel injection, resulting in engine power interruption, vibration, or even stalling, posing serious safety hazards.
‌Backfire in the intake pipe‌: During acceleration or deceleration, the engine may emit abnormal sounds of "bang bang", which is caused by abnormal combustion in the intake pipe due to insufficient or excessive mixture resulting in abnormal combustion.
For some models, when the air flow meter fails, the engine fault light (Check Engine) will illuminate. However, there are also cases where the signal deviation is small, and the ECU fails to record the fault code, only showing a performance decline. Professional diagnosis can be confirmed by detecting the sensor waveform with an oscilloscope (the normal thermocouple voltage should be within 2.5-3.2V) or reading the fault code.
If multiple symptoms occur, it is recommended to promptly visit a professional repair shop for inspection. In necessary cases, replace the original air flow meter and pay attention to regularly cleaning the intake system to avoid dust accumulation affecting the sensor accuracy.
