Car radiator: The "temperature control guardian" and troubleshooting guide

The car radiator, scientifically known as the radiator, is the core component of the car's cooling system and can be regarded as the "temperature control guardian" of the engine. It seems to be just a metal component with fine pipes, but it plays an indispensable role in maintaining the normal operation of the engine.
From a core function perspective, the primary task of the radiator is to cool and reduce the temperature of the engine through the circulation of coolant. When the engine is working, it is like a high-intensity "heater", generating a large amount of heat, of which about 30% - 40% of the heat needs to be dissipated through the cooling system. After absorbing the heat from the cylinder body in the engine water jacket, the coolant flows to the radiator, where it passes through the heat dissipation fins in the radiator and, with the forced ventilation of vehicle movement or the cooling fan, transfers the heat to the air. The cooled coolant then re-enters the engine circulation to ensure that the engine's operating temperature remains stable within the ideal range of 85℃ - 105℃. This process can effectively prevent serious faults such as piston jamming and cylinder deformation caused by overheating of the engine, and also prevent efficiency decline due to low-temperature operation.
In addition to the basic cooling function, the radiator also has many auxiliary functions. It can maintain the pressure balance of the cooling system. The pressure valve on the radiator cap, with a pressure of 100 - 150 kPa, can raise the boiling point of the coolant to 120℃, preventing pipe bursts and making the vehicle safer when driving at high speeds in summer. Moreover, the antifreeze in the radiator can form a metal protective film, reducing corrosion of the water pump and pipes, and preventing a 30% decrease in cooling efficiency within 3 years. Some models' automatic transmission oil, steering assist oil cooling, and air conditioning system cooling also rely on the collaborative work of the radiator.
However, this "temperature control guardian" can also malfunction, causing potential hazards to the vehicle's operation. Common radiator malfunctions include the following types.
Firstly, coolant leakage. When the radiator has cracks, damaged seals, or loose pipe joints and aging rubber hoses, coolant will leak. If the leakage is severe, liquid droplets will appear in the engine compartment, and insufficient coolant will directly lead to poor engine cooling and a sharp increase in temperature, causing the water temperature warning light on the dashboard to illuminate. For example, models like Audi Q5 and BYD Song are prone to water tank leakage problems, which may be caused by water scale accumulation due to long-term use, vibration during driving causing pipe damage, or the formation of water scale due to the use of inferior antifreeze over a long period.
Secondly, radiator blockage. External blockage is mostly caused by debris such as leaves, insects, and willow fluff adhering to the radiator fins, affecting air circulation and reducing the cooling effect. Internal blockage often occurs due to the formation of sediment from using inferior antifreeze or water scale formed from long-term use of tap water, blocking the cooling pipes. Blockage will cause poor coolant circulation, preventing the engine from dissipating heat in time, and subsequently triggering high temperatures.
Thirdly, engine overheating. This is often the direct manifestation of radiator failure. Besides the above leakage and blockage causes, pump failure leading to insufficient cooling fluid circulation, thermostat jamming and inability to switch between large and small circulation, and the introduction of air into the cooling system to interfere with coolant circulation, all can cause engine overheating. If not promptly handled, it can lead to severe consequences such as melting of piston rings and valve plates, and cylinder deformation, with high repair costs.
To avoid water tank failures affecting vehicle operation, car owners should perform regular maintenance. They should regularly check the coolant level, ensuring it is between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks on the expansion water tank. Add the same type of coolant when it is insufficient. Avoid using coolant from different brands. Replace it regularly according to the vehicle manual requirements to prevent the formation of water scale. At the same time, they should regularly clean the surface of the radiator to remove attached debris and keep the heat dissipation fins clean and unobstructed.
When noticing signs of water tank failure, such as the dashboard water temperature warning light illuminating, inexplicable reduction in coolant, or white water vapor emerging from the engine compartment, immediate measures should be taken. First, find a safe place to park the car, keep the engine running at idle speed to dissipate heat, and open the engine hood to increase the heat dissipation rate. Do not immediately turn off the engine or rashly open the radiator cover to avoid burns. Then, contact professional repair personnel promptly to identify the cause of the fault and carry out repairs.
Although the car water tank is unremarkable, it is related to the service life of the engine and the driving safety of the vehicle. Understanding its function, attaching importance to daily maintenance, and promptly dealing with faults can ensure that this "temperature control guardian" works continuously and stably, protecting the engine.
