Automobile Turbocharger: The Hidden Hero and Potential Faults of the Power Engine

In the current era of continuous technological advancement in automobiles, the turbocharger has become a key component for enhancing engine performance. It is like a behind-the-scenes hero, bringing more powerful performance and better fuel economy to vehicles. However, this hero also has "temperamental" moments. Various faults can affect its normal operation, thereby impacting vehicle performance.
The core function of the turbocharger
The turbocharger is essentially an air compressor. It ingeniously utilizes the exhaust energy from the engine to drive the turbine inside the housing. The turbine then drives the coaxial impeller, compressing the air and boosting it before sending it into the cylinder. This process significantly increases the engine's intake volume, thereby enhancing fuel combustion efficiency and allowing the engine to output power by up to 30% more with the same exhaust volume.
In terms of power enhancement, the effect of the turbocharger is truly astonishing. For example, the power of a 1.8T turbocharged engine can rival that of a 2.4L naturally aspirated engine, while the fuel consumption is similar to that of a 1.8L engine. In the racing field, the turbocharger shines even more brightly. It enables engines with limited displacement to obtain greater power, giving them an advantage on the racetrack.
In addition to enhancing power, turbochargers also perform well in fuel economy and environmental protection. By improving combustion efficiency, it can reduce fuel consumption, typically saving 3% to 5%. At the same time, the improvement in combustion efficiency helps reduce the emission of harmful components such as particulates and nitrogen oxides, contributing to environmental protection. Moreover, turbochargers have a high-altitude compensation function, which can overcome the power decline of engines in high-altitude areas caused by thin air.
Common faults and solutions of turbochargers
Although turbochargers have obvious advantages, they can also encounter various faults during long-term use.
Leakage faults are one of the most common problems. If the oil consumption is high but the exhaust smoke color is normal and the power is not affected, it may be that the intake or return oil pipe of the turbocharger is leaking. At this time, check if the sealing ring is intact. If it is damaged, replace it immediately. If the oil consumption is high and the exhaust emits blue smoke but the power remains unchanged, it is likely that the sealing ring at the compressor end has failed. Check the ness of the return oil pipe and carry out maintenance. If the oil consumption is high, the exhaust emits blue or black smoke, and the power decreases, it may be that the gap between the piston and the cylinder is too large, causing oil to seep into the combustion chamber. In this case, a more in-depth inspection of the engine is required.
Power loss faults should not be ignored either. For example, when the turbocharger of the BMW 2 Series malfunctions, there may be a power loss phenomenon. The causes of power loss are numerous. For instance, if the intake system is blocked, the air filter blockage will cause insufficient intake air, affecting the normal operation of the turbocharger. At this time, clean or replace the air filter. It may also be that the bypass valve cover plate is not closed tightly, resulting in pressure leakage. Simply replacing the bypass valve cover plate can solve the problem.
Metal friction sounds, black smoke emission, and power reduction are also worthy of attention. If the turbocharger makes metal friction sounds, the exhaust emits black smoke, and the power decreases, it may be that the turbocharger rotor bearing or thrust bearing is worn out excessively, causing the impeller to rub against the turbocharger housing. At this time, it is necessary to repair or replace the relevant bearing components in time. Also, when the flap is loose and collides, the engine will make a loud noise during cold start, and the seal will not be tight. Accelerating sharply will cause transmission system failures.
Foreign object damage faults also occur from time to time. Poor sealing of the intake pipe, with the intake not passing through the filter and directly entering the compressor impeller, or not replacing the air filter as required, can lead to foreign objects entering the turbocharger and damaging the end face of the compressor. Damage to the parts inside the diesel engine cylinder, or foreign objects entering the exhaust manifold during maintenance, can cause radial damage to the rotor or the transmission shaft, ultimately resulting in rotor jamming or shaft fracture. To reduce the occurrence of turbocharger failures, proper daily use and maintenance are of utmost importance. After the engine is started, it should idle for about 3 minutes. In winter, the engine should be warmed up for at least 5 minutes or more to allow the engine oil to fully lubricate the turbocharger. After driving at high speed or climbing a slope, do not immediately shut off the engine. Instead, continue to idle for about 1 minute to ensure that the turbocharger bearings are fully lubricated. At the same time, it is necessary to replace the engine oil and oil filter regularly. Use the specified lubricating oil and filter elements to avoid faults caused by unclean or insufficient lubricating oil.
In conclusion, the turbocharger plays an indispensable role in the automotive power system. Understanding its function and common faults, and mastering the correct use and maintenance methods, can ensure that it continuously provides strong power for the vehicle and accompanies us on a smooth journey.
