What is the electrical resistance of the car blower?

The automotive blower electrical resistance is the core electronic component in the automotive air conditioning system that controls the speed of the blower (fan). Its main function is to achieve multi-level adjustment of the air output volume of the air conditioner (such as low, medium, high three levels or more levels) by regulating the current size. Working principle
Traditional Resistance Speed Control: In most manual air conditioning vehicles, the wind motor's internal resistance is composed of a series of segmented resistance wires or ceramic-based alloy resistors. When the user adjusts the wind speed gear, the circuit switches to different resistance paths, thereby changing the current flowing through the wind motor. The greater the resistance, the smaller the current, and the lower the wind speed. Conversely, at higher gears, the current almost bypasses the resistance, and the motor operates at full speed.
Modern PWM Speed Control: Some newer vehicles (especially those with automatic air conditioning systems) have adopted pulse width modulation (PWM) technology. The air conditioning control unit regulates the average voltage through electronic power transistors (such as MOSFETs) to achieve stepless speed control. However, the term "wind motor resistance" is still often used to broadly refer to the entire wind speed control module.
Common Fault Manifestations
When the wind motor resistance ages or malfunctions, the fault indicator may not be triggered, but the following typical problems may occur:
‌No wind in the highest gear: The lowest or middle gear fails, and the air volume cannot be reduced.
‌No response in a certain gear: For example, "2nd gear" or "3rd gear" does not produce wind when pressed.
‌No wind at all: The resistance is completely broken, and the current cannot pass through.
‌Sudden change in wind speed or buzzing sound: Poor internal contact or oxidation of the resistance wire leads to unstable current.
Causes of Failure and Vulnerability
‌High-temperature oxidation: The resistance is often exposed to high temperatures in the air duct of the air conditioning system, and the resistance wire or solder joints are prone to aging and short circuits.
‌Vibration fatigue: Continuous vibration during vehicle operation causes loose or broken internal connection points.
‌Damp corrosion: In humid southern environments or after washing, moisture seeps in, accelerating the oxidation of metal components.
‌Material and Design: Some older models (such as Audi Q5 B8, Buick LaCrosse, Kia Sportage, etc.) have an original compact heat dissipation design, and the failure rate of vehicles over 5 years significantly increases.
Recommendations for Replacement
‌优先选择 original or compatible modules: Third-party products may have power or resistance values that do not match, potentially causing secondary damage or poor contact.
‌Easy installation: Most vehicles have original vehicle interfaces that are directly connected, requiring no rewiring or programming.
‌Check sequence: If there is a wind speed anomaly, it is recommended to first check the fuse (e.g., Volkswagen Passat SC39/SB29), then measure the resistance value (normal range is approximately 5–15 Ω), and finally check the motor.
The wind motor resistance is small but is a key component affecting the comfort inside the vehicle. Its failure is often mistaken for "no cold air" or "motor failure," but it is actually just a failure in wind speed control. Timely replacement can restore the delicate wind speed adjustment experience.
The core function of the air conditioning wind motor resistance is to regulate the rotational speed of the air conditioning fan, thereby controlling the size of the air outlet. Its working principle and related characteristics are as follows:
Main Function
‌Control wind speed: By changing the resistance value to limit the current flowing through the air conditioning fan motor, achieving multiple wind speed settings (such as low, medium, high, and highest).
‌Auxiliary temperature control: Although it does not directly control the temperature, it affects the mixing effect of cold and hot air after being sent out, indirectly participating in temperature control. Working principle
In traditional mechanical systems, the wind motor resistance is composed of multiple resistors of different values. When users select different wind speed gears, they are actually switching the resistance values in the circuit, thereby changing the motor voltage and speed.
At the highest speed gear (or in automatic air conditioning systems), the resistors are usually bypassed, and the motor is directly connected to the power supply, obtaining the maximum current and speed.
Modern vehicles mostly adopt electronic speed control modules (such as PWM-controlled MOSFETs), which adjust the average voltage by changing the duty cycle of pulse width modulation to achieve stepless speed control, with higher efficiency and less heat generation.
Fault manifestations and protection mechanisms
Common faults: Resistance burnout, fuse melting, causing the fan to be unable to adjust speed, usually leaving only the highest gear or completely not rotating.
Built-in protection: Most fan resistors are integrated with temperature fuses. When the fan is stuck or the current is abnormal, the fuse melts to prevent overheating and fire.
Installation location: It is usually fixed in the air conditioning duct, using the dynamic airflow of the fan for heat dissipation.
If the wind speed cannot be adjusted, only the highest gear is available, or the fan does not work at all, it may be that the fan resistor is damaged. It is recommended to have a professional maintenance personnel use a multimeter to test or replace it to avoid circuit risks.
