What is the function of the car air flow meter?

Measure the intake air volume and control the fuel injection
The core function of the vehicle's air flow meter is to measure the air flow entering the engine and transmit the signal to the electronic control unit (ECU) to precisely regulate the fuel injection volume, thereby optimizing combustion efficiency, reducing emissions, and enhancing power performance. Specific functions include:
- Real-time monitoring of intake air volume: By detecting the air flow velocity using a thermistor or vortex sensor, the physical quantity is converted into an electrical signal (such as resistance change or frequency signal) to ensure the ECU obtains accurate data.
- Controlling the air-fuel ratio: The ECU dynamically adjusts the fuel injection volume based on the air flow data, maintaining an ideal air-fuel ratio (approximately 14.7:1), avoiding overly rich (causing carbon buildup and increased fuel consumption) or overly lean (resulting in power loss) combustion.
- Adapting to different operating conditions: It responds quickly (within milliseconds) during idle, acceleration, or deceleration, for example, increasing fuel injection to enhance power during acceleration and maintaining stable air intake to prevent engine stalling during idle.
When the air flow meter in a vehicle malfunctions, the main symptoms include:
- Idle instability
- Weak acceleration
- Increased fuel consumption
- Black smoke from the exhaust pipe
- Intermittent engine stalling or wobbling
- Specific manifestations:
Core fault symptoms
A damaged air flow meter will cause abnormal intake air volume detection, affecting fuel injection control and leading to typical problems:
- Idle instability: The engine shakes noticeably when idling or at low speeds, with fluctuating RPMs, and even stalling (due to the ECU's inability to accurately adjust the mixture ratio).
- Weak acceleration: The engine responds slowly when stepping on the accelerator, making it difficult to overtake (especially at high speeds, such as when the speed exceeds 120 km/h and the RPM drops).
- Abnormal fuel consumption increase: Fuel consumption rises by 10%-15%, due to incorrect fuel injection volume calculation, resulting in either overly rich (causing carbon buildup and increased fuel consumption) or overly lean (causing power loss) combustion.
- Black smoke from the exhaust pipe: Incomplete combustion produces a large amount of black smoke, accompanied by excessive exhaust pollution (HC emissions can exceed 500 ppm).
- Intermittent engine stalling or wobbling: The engine suddenly shakes or stalls during high-speed driving, and operates normally at idle (due to inaccurate high-speed signal output).
Other associated effects
- Fault indicator light: The dashboard lights up the engine fault indicator (such as "SERVICE ENGINE" prompt).
- Difficulty starting: It is difficult to ignite the engine at cold start due to the ECU's inability to match the correct air-fuel ratio.
- Long-term damage risk: Persistent faults may exacerbate engine wear and reduce cylinder compression force.
If the above symptoms occur, it is recommended to have them repaired promptly to avoid damaging components such as the three-way catalytic converter.
The air flow meter in a vehicle can be cleaned, but it is usually only necessary to clean when it is dirty or faulty.
Cleanability
- Can be cleaned: When carbon or dirt accumulates on the internal sensors of the air flow meter, cleaning can restore its measurement accuracy and solve problems such as engine power deficiency and increased fuel consumption.
- Not necessary: In a well-maintained vehicle, the air flow meter is usually clean and does not require regular cleaning.
Cleaning methods and precautions
- Location and disassembly: The air flow meter is usually located at the air filter behind the intake pipe. Disassembly requires the use of professional tools to avoid damage.
- Cleaning operation:
- External cleaning: Use a non-woven cloth dipped in alcohol to wipe the oil stains on the casing.
- Internal sensors: Use cotton swabs dipped in 95% or higher alcohol or dedicated electronic cleaning agents to gently wipe the platinum wire/thermistor sensors. Do not use corrosive cleaning agents (such as carburetor cleaning agents).
- Grid cleaning: Use a soft-bristled brush to clean the impurities on the grid.
- Drying and reinstallation: Use a hair dryer to coolly blow dry the components thoroughly, ensuring complete drying before reinstalling, and pay attention to secure the wire connections.
- Technical specifications:
- Cleaning agent selection: Only volatile electronic cleaning agents or anhydrous ethanol (concentration ≥ 95%) are allowed. Operate gently: The sensor components are delicate. The wiping force should be light to avoid damage.
After installation, check: After cleaning, start the engine and observe the operation status. If a fault code appears, perform ECU adaptive learning.
