The core function of the car fan

The car fan is a key component of the engine cooling system. Its main mission is to maintain the engine operating within an appropriate temperature range, ensuring the vehicle's performance and durability.
From the perspective of its working principle, the fan generates forced airflow by rotating, accelerating the air flow on the surface of the radiator, thereby quickly removing the engine heat carried by the coolant. When the engine is at idle or low-speed driving, the natural airflow generated by the vehicle is insufficient to meet the cooling requirements. At this time, the fan will start promptly to enhance the cooling efficiency of the radiator; while at high-speed driving, the natural airflow can already provide sufficient cooling, and most vehicles' fans will automatically stop running to reduce energy consumption and noise.
According to the different driving methods, car fans can be divided into two major categories: mechanical fans and electronic fans. Mechanical fans are connected to the engine crankshaft through a belt, and their rotational speed is synchronized with the engine speed. They have a simple and reliable structure and are commonly found in traditional vehicles; electronic fans are driven by an electric motor and are controlled by the on-board computer based on parameters such as water temperature and vehicle speed to automatically start or stop and adjust the speed. They not only have higher cooling efficiency but also can effectively reduce unnecessary energy consumption and are the standard configuration for current mainstream vehicles.
In addition, car fans are closely related to the air conditioning system. When the air conditioning is turned on, the fan will operate forcibly to provide cooling support for the condenser, ensuring the cooling effect of the air conditioning system. It can be said that the car fan is both the "cooling guardian" of the engine and the "behind-the-scenes assistant" of the air conditioning system.
Common faults and judgment methods of car fans
Fan does not operate
This is the most common type of fault, mainly manifested as the engine water temperature rises to the normal operating temperature, but the fan still does not start. The causes of this fault are diverse:
Circuit fault: The fuse melts, the relay is damaged, or the circuit is short-circuited or disconnected, which will directly cut off the power supply circuit of the fan. Owners can check whether the fan fuse in the fuse box has melted or use a multimeter to measure the on-off state of the relay for preliminary diagnosis.
Thermostat system fault: The failure of the water temperature sensor will cause the on-board computer to be unable to accurately sense the engine temperature, thus unable to issue a fan start command; the failure of the thermostat switch will directly lose the function of triggering the fan to operate. Such faults can be diagnosed by reading the vehicle fault codes or detecting sensor data.
Fan motor damage: Wear of the carbon brushes inside the motor, dry bearings, or burned-out coils will cause the motor to fail to work properly. Owners can directly connect the fan motor to a 12V power supply. If the motor still does not operate, it is basically certain that the motor is damaged.
Fan operates abnormally
Abnormal noise: The fan operates with friction sounds, buzzing sounds, or stalling sounds, mostly caused by blade deformation, bearing wear, or foreign objects entangling the blades. Blade deformation will cause friction with the fan housing, bearing wear will produce abnormal noises, and fluff, plastic bags, etc., entangling the blades will not only affect the fan speed but also may cause blade fractures.
Abnormal rotational speed: The fan rotates too slowly to provide sufficient cooling air volume, which may be due to motor aging, insufficient voltage, or control module failure; while the fan continues to run at high speed without stopping, it may be due to the sticking of the temperature control switch or the error in the control module program, causing the fan to fail to receive the stop signal.
Related fault manifestations
Car fan faults may also trigger a series of chain reactions. For example, the cooling effect of the air conditioning system decreases because the fan fault causes poor cooling of the condenser, which in turn affects the cooling efficiency of the air conditioning system; in addition, abnormal fan operation during cold start may be due to the damage of the water temperature sensor or abnormal pressure in the air conditioning system, causing the fan to mistakenly start.
Maintenance and prevention of car fan faults
Maintenance suggestions
For different types of faults, the maintenance methods are also different: circuit faults require replacing the melted fuse or damaged relays, and repairing short-circuited or disconnected circuits; thermostat system faults require replacing the failed water temperature sensor or thermostat switch; When the fan motor is damaged, it usually requires replacing the entire motor assembly. If the blades are deformed or foreign objects are entangled, they can be corrected and the foreign objects can be removed. If the blades are severely damaged, the fan assembly needs to be replaced.
It should be noted that some fault diagnosis and repair require specialized equipment and techniques, such as reading fault codes and detecting sensor data streams. It is recommended that car owners seek professional repair services at a specialized shop when encountering complex faults. preventive measure
Regular cleaning: Regularly remove dust and debris from the fan blades and the surface of the radiator to maintain a good heat dissipation environment and prevent foreign objects from entangling the fan blades.
Routine inspection: Conduct checks on the fan motor, bearings, and circuit system every 20,000 to 30,000 kilometers. Replace aging components in time; before the onset of high temperatures in summer, conduct a comprehensive inspection of the cooling system to ensure the fan operates normally.
Reasonable use: Avoid idling the vehicle for a long time to reduce the workload of the fan; regularly check the coolant level and quality to ensure smooth circulation of the cooling system.
