What is a phase sensor

Phase sensors are important automotive electronic components and are also used in multiple fields to measure physical quantities such as the position and speed of objects.
In the automotive field, it is mainly used to detect the valve timing of the engine to determine the optimal ignition timing.
There are various types of phase sensors, which are classified into magnetoelectric and Hall types, generating sine wave and square wave signals respectively. Generally speaking, it also includes photoelectric sensors and magnetic sensors.
The photoelectric phase sensor outputs signals of different levels by rotating the signal panel and turning on or off the phototransistor based on the transmission or blocking of light.
The Hall type in magnetic phase sensors utilizes the Hall effect, while the magnetoelectric type utilizes the principle of magnetic induction. When the signal rotor rotates, the change in the magnetic circuit causes an alternating electromotive force to be generated in the induction coil.
Its working principle is to achieve the function by detecting the position and rotation Angle of the camshaft. The internal detection coil can sense nearby metal objects. When there are no metal objects, the LC circuit resonates and the output voltage peaks. When a metal object approaches, eddy currents are induced in the detection coil, the inductance of the coil changes, the LC parallel circuit deharmonizes, and the output voltage drops. The change is inversely proportional to the distance of the metal object. The phase change is detected by measuring the output voltage change.
The valve timing refers to the Angle at which the intake and exhaust valves of an engine are opened and closed relative to the rotation of the crankshaft. The correct valve timing is crucial to engine performance, influencing power, fuel economy and exhaust emissions.
The phase sensor is responsible for monitoring the accuracy of the valve train phase. When an abnormality occurs, an alarm will be triggered and the engine fault light will illuminate.
Phase sensors, which are also the general term for camshaft position sensors and crankshaft position sensors, are an important basis for determining the ignition time of an engine.
The camshaft phase sensor detects the rotational position of the camshaft and inputs a signal to the ECU, which is the main signal for ignition control.
The crankshaft position sensor detects the crankshaft Angle of the engine and the top dead center of the piston, and sends the signals to the engine computer to control ignition and fuel injection timing. It is also the signal source for measuring the engine speed.
In other fields, phase sensors, based on the principle of phase measurement, emit signals to objects and calculate the position information of the objects by measuring the phase difference between the emitted and reflected signals.
It is widely applied in fields such as industrial automation, aerospace, medical care, and robotics, and can assist in autonomous navigation control of robots, navigation control of transportation vehicles, and medical diagnosis, etc.
The phase sensor is a core component of modern automotive engine control systems, composed of crankshaft position sensors and camshaft position sensors. The crankshaft position sensor is responsible for collecting the engine speed and crankshaft Angle signals, providing a timing reference for ignition and fuel injection. The camshaft position sensor ensures the precise execution of sequential fuel injection control and detonation control by identifying the position of the top dead center of cylinder compression [3] [8]. Phase sensor failure can lead to a series of problems.
The first problem is the difficulty in starting the engine. The phase sensor needs to provide the ECU with crankshaft position information, and the ECU calculates the ignition time and fuel injection volume based on this information. If the phase sensor malfunctions, it cannot provide accurate information. The ECU cannot precisely control ignition and fuel injection, making engine starting difficult or even impossible.
Then there is unstable idling. Under normal circumstances, the phase sensor monitors the crankshaft position, allowing the engine control unit to adjust the ignition timing and intake volume to ensure a smooth idle speed of the engine. Once the phase sensor malfunctions, the information transmitted to the ECU will be inaccurate, and the ECU's control over the engine will deviate. As a result, the idle speed will be unstable, and problems such as idle jitter and fluctuating speed may occur.
It will also cause poor acceleration. When the vehicle accelerates, the phase sensor needs to provide real-time and accurate information such as the crankshaft position, so that the ECU can promptly adjust the ignition and fuel injection strategies to meet the vehicle's acceleration requirements. When a malfunction occurs, the information is inaccurate, the ECU cannot make correct adjustments, the engine power output is affected, acceleration will be weak, and even a jerky feeling may occur, which affects the driving experience.
In addition, the fault light will come on. When the car's fault diagnosis system detects a phase sensor failure, it will trigger a fault code, and the engine fault light on the dashboard will light up, reminding the car owner that there is a problem with the vehicle.
Finally, fuel consumption increases. A phase sensor failure causes the ECU to be unable to precisely control the fuel injection volume. The fuel injection volume may be either too much or too little, resulting in incomplete combustion and the fuel not being efficiently converted into power, thereby increasing fuel consumption.
