What is the nylon pipe assembly for automotive fuel evaporation emissions?

The automotive fuel evaporation emission nylon pipe assembly is the nylon piping and connectors used in the fuel evaporation control system (EVAP) to transfer fuel vapors.
Main function: It collects the evaporated fuel vapors from the fuel tank and stores them in the charcoal canister. When the engine is running, the vapors are then sent to the intake manifold for combustion, reducing the direct emission of vapors into the atmosphere.
Common materials: Mostly made of long-chain nylon, such as PA12, and some also use PA11. The features include resistance to oil, fuel vapors, aging, good low-temperature toughness, and low permeability.
Common parts: Vapor pipelines connecting the fuel tank, charcoal canister, and intake manifold, ventilation pipes, quick connectors, etc.
Encyclopedia
If these pipes are aged, cracked or have leaks at the joints, it will lead to excessive evaporation emissions, a gasoline smell at the fuel filler opening, and malfunction indicators lighting up, among other issues.

The nylon pipe is mainly responsible for safely transporting fuel vapors in the fuel evaporation emission system, preventing them from leaking into the atmosphere. It connects the fuel tank, the carbon canister, and the engine, and must be both oil-resistant and have good sealing performance. It is a crucial transmission channel in the system.

What does it mainly do?
- Transport fuel vapors: Introduce the volatile gasoline vapors from the fuel tank into the activated carbon canister for temporary storage, and then send them into the engine cylinders for combustion when the engine is running.
- Prevent oil and gas leakage: The pipeline must be sealed reliably to avoid direct release of fuel vapors into the air, causing pollution and safety hazards.
- Cooperate with the system: It works in conjunction with components such as the carbon canister electromagnetic valve and pressure sensor to make the fuel vapor recovery process controllable.

Why use nylon material?
- Oil-resistant and chemically resistant: Long-term contact with gasoline vapors will not be corroded or swollen, maintaining the stability of the pipeline.
- Good barrier properties: Fuel vapors are not easily able to penetrate the pipe wall, resulting in better emission reduction effects.
- Resistant to aging and low temperatures: It can work normally in the engine compartment under high temperatures and in winter under low temperatures, and is less likely to crack.

What will happen if there is a problem?
Pipe damage or aging will cause fuel vapors to leak, and a gasoline smell may be detected inside the vehicle. It may also trigger emission fault codes, affecting vehicle annual inspections and environmental compliance.

If there is a problem with the nylon pipe component of the vehicle's fuel evaporation emission system, it usually manifests as pipe damage, joint leakage or sealing failure, causing the engine fault light to illuminate, increased fuel consumption, unstable idle speed and a gasoline smell inside the vehicle. This type of fault is often a batch issue in some models. The handling process should first confirm the fault code and the specific leakage point, and then decide whether to replace or repair.
Common fault points:
- Pipe damage: If the nylon pipe is placed close to the exhaust pipe, long-term high-temperature baking will accelerate aging and cracking. For example, some owners of the fuel version of BYD Song PLUS have reported that the original pipe was damaged due to high-temperature baking, and the 4S store confirmed it was a batch design defect. It can be replaced with an improved type of pipe through a goodwill claim.
- Joint leakage: The joint of the threaded nylon pipe assembly is a weak point. Insufficient tightening of the nut or vibration of the vehicle can cause leakage. During repair, the sealing can be improved by applying pipe thread sealant.
- Aging sealing ring: If the sealing ring of the fuel filling pipe is damaged, it will cause fuel vapor to escape, resulting in excessive evaporation emissions and failing the emission test during annual inspections.
- Carbon canister electromagnetic valve sticking: When the electromagnetic valve is not tightly closed, fuel vapors will not be controlled and enter the intake tract, causing a rich mixture, with typical symptoms being increased fuel consumption, unstable idle speed, and a stronger gasoline smell.

Suggestions for troubleshooting and handling:
- First, read the fault code: Use a diagnostic device to read the fault code stored in the engine control unit, such as P0440 (evaporation emission system failure), P0441 (blowing flow incorrect), P0442 (small leakage). The fault code can narrow down the troubleshooting scope.
- Check the fuel tank cap: Confirm whether the fuel tank cap is tightened and hear the "click" sound as a sign of completion. This is the most easily overlooked common leakage cause.
- Check the pipe and joints: Visual inspection of the nylon pipe for any damage, deformation, or looseness, and check for oil stains or cracks at the joint; apply soap water to the suspected leakage point and observe if there are bubbles.
- Test the carbon canister electromagnetic valve: Remove the electromagnetic valve, disconnect the power supply, and blow air should not pass through; if air can pass through when the power is off, it indicates internal sticking, and it needs to be replaced.
- Check the carbon canister and filter: Check for cracks in the carbon canister shell, whether the air inlet filter at the bottom is clogged with dust, and the carbon canister has a general lifespan of about 60,000 kilometers.

If you smell gasoline, pull over to the side of the road and avoid any fire sources, then check it out. Do not continue driving with a faulty vehicle. The malfunction of the evaporation emission system will increase fuel consumption, reduce power, and may also affect the passing of the annual inspection.
Regarding claims
If the vehicle is within the warranty period, or the fault is a batch design defect, you can contact the 4S store to apply for a good faith claim for free replacement. Some manufacturers may initially deny the problem and insist on filing a complaint or reporting to the market supervision department, which can help facilitate the handling.
