Car fuel tank - body - assembly function
The fuel tank is an independent functional unit within the vehicle body assembly. Its main functions include storing fuel, ensuring range, and also performing auxiliary tasks such as heat dissipation, impurity precipitation, and bubble separation.
Core functions of the fuel tank:
- Storing fuel: Providing a continuous and stable fuel supply to the engine, which is the energy source for vehicle operation and directly determines the range.
- Heat dissipation and cooling: While storing fuel, the fuel tank helps dissipate the oil's heat, preventing excessive temperature that could affect the normal operation of the system.
- Precipitating impurities and separating bubbles: The internal structure of the fuel tank (such as baffles) helps precipitate impurities and separate bubbles, ensuring that the fuel entering the engine is purer.
The relationship between the fuel tank and the vehicle body, assembly:
- The fuel tank is part of the vehicle body assembly: The vehicle assembly is composed of multiple parts and components that are combined and assembled to form an independent functional unit, such as the engine, transmission, body, frame, etc. The fuel tank, as a fuel storage device, is the key module in the vehicle body assembly responsible for the fuel supply function.
- Installation position of the fuel tank in the vehicle body: It is usually located at the rear of the vehicle and must be installed separately from the engine to avoid the risk of engine overheating causing fuel tank damage in case of an accident.
- Collaboration between the fuel tank and the entire vehicle: The fuel tank is connected to the engine through intake and return fuel pipes. The fuel pump sucks fuel from the tank, passes it through a filter for purification, and then sends it to the fuel rail before being sprayed into the combustion chamber for power generation.
The installation position and structural design of the fuel tank directly affect driving safety. For example, the sealing of the fuel tank cover, the smoothness of the drainage holes, and the position of the fuel supply pipe all require regular inspection and maintenance.
If the fuel tank assembly is damaged, it usually needs to be replaced as a whole. It is not recommended to repair it. The fuel tank is a key component for vehicle safety. Once it is damaged, corroded, or has internal sensor failures (such as the sensor and fuel tank integrated in the Audi saddle-type fuel tank), it can only be replaced as a whole assembly.
Special cases: For some vehicle models, such as the Porsche Cayenne, the fuel tank failure may not allow for the replacement of the ventilation valve alone; it must be replaced as a whole fuel tank assembly.
After repair, there is a high risk of danger with the fuel tank. Residual gas from welding may cause an explosion. Professional technicians must operate it. It is not recommended to handle it yourself.
Processing steps:
- Immediately stop the vehicle: When discovering fuel leakage or fuel tank failure, stop the vehicle by the side of the road, keep away from fire sources, and avoid any sparks or open flames.
- Emergency leak sealing: Small cracks can be temporarily sealed with soap or chewing gum, but this can only be used as an emergency measure and should not be used for a long time.
- Call for a tow truck: In case of severe leakage, call for a tow truck to bring the vehicle to the repair shop for processing. Do not drive the vehicle yourself.
- Confirm the source of the parts: When replacing, pay attention to distinguishing between original factory parts and aftermarket parts. The cost of dismantled parts is low but comes with risks. It is recommended to choose parts with warranty.
