What is the car grille cover plate - component?

"The automotive grille cover plate - component" usually refers to the upper cover plate or closure plate within the front grille assembly. It is a part of the intake grille system, primarily serving the functions of protection, fixation, and assisting in heat dissipation.

Specifically, it can be understood from two perspectives:
From the perspective of the vehicle structure:
The front grille (commonly known as the mesh) itself is composed of multiple components. The cover plate is the part responsible for "closing" or "sealing":
Grille frame: The basic supporting structure, usually made of metal or plastic.
Grille mesh structure: The grid-like main body, allowing air to pass through and blocking debris.
Grille cover plate (upper cover plate): The plate covering the top or back of the grille, used for fixing the grille structure, blocking internal parts, and some models may also integrate ventilation or lighting functions.
Grille decorative parts: Chrome strips, badges, etc., for appearance.
Grille sealing strip: Rubber sealing piece, preventing rain and liquids from entering the engine compartment.

From the perspective of materials:
Another common usage refers to the grille cover plate made of fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP). This cover plate is a closed structure formed by adding a closed cover plate on top of the grid-like grille plate, and is often used in car washrooms, factory trenches, and sewage tanks, with characteristics such as corrosion resistance, slip resistance, and insulation.

In simple terms: The grille cover plate is the plate-like closed component within the grille assembly. It can be either the upper cover plate of the front grille (used for fixation and protection) or an industrial grille cover plate made of materials like FRP (used in trenches, platforms, etc.).

The core functions of the automotive grille cover plate (i.e., the intake grille / mesh) are ventilation and heat dissipation, protection of the engine compartment internal components, and enhancing the visual recognition. It is usually located in front of the vehicle's front end, above the front bumper, and is a key component connecting the vehicle's exterior appearance with the mechanical system.

Three core functions:
Heat dissipation and air intake: Guiding external air into the engine compartment to cool the water tank radiator, condenser, etc., preventing the engine from overheating.
Protection and safety: The grid structure acts like a "guard net", blocking debris such as stones, leaves, and insects from entering the engine compartment, protecting internal components.
Aesthetics and aerodynamics: Blocking internal pipelines to enhance the overall vehicle appearance; well-designed can reduce wind resistance and improve fuel economy.

Advanced functions:
Active intake grille: Can automatically adjust its opening and closing. Closed during cold start to accelerate the warming process, partially closed at high speeds to reduce wind resistance, saving 0.3 - 0.5 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers.
Brand recognition: BMW's double kidney, Jeep's seven holes, Lexus' hourglass shape, etc., have become brand signature designs.
New forms for electric vehicles: Pure electric vehicles often use closed "digital grilles", integrating LED lights and laser radar, reducing wind resistance and enhancing technological sophistication.

Note: When the grille is covered (such as with stickers or snow), it can lead to poor heat dissipation, potentially triggering a water temperature alarm or engine overheating.

Grille cover plate failure usually refers to problems with the components of the active intake grille (grille partition), common in models such as Toyota Corolla, Camry, and Cadillac. The core issues are faults in the blades, motors, or control parts, affecting heat dissipation and fuel consumption.
Common causes of failure:
Motor damage or jamming: The most common. Water immersion, waterlogging, or debris blocking the blades causes the motor to overload and damage, resulting in a fault code such as P059F (active grille fan performance).
Blade jamming or connecting rod detachment: Foreign objects (sand, gravel, leaves) blocking the track or shaft of the blade, or a broken or detached connecting rod, causing the grille to fail to open or close properly.
Line problems: Breaks, short circuits, or poor contact in the motor power supply lines, resulting in abnormal signal transmission.
Computer control mismatch: During rainy weather with water immersion, water pressure causes the grille plate to move without computer instructions, not matching the control system, triggering a fault.
How to identify and handle the issue:
‌First, read the fault code: Use the diagnostic computer to read it and confirm whether it points to the grille fan or the motor. If it's just an occasional occurrence, you can first clear the code and observe.
‌Check the motor and blades: Remove the grille assembly, manually move the blades to see if they are stuck, and check if the motor is working. If the blades are stuck, clean the foreign objects; if the motor is damaged, replace it.
‌Repair vs Replacement:
‌Grille lower part is broken alone: For some models (such as Avanza, Camry), the lower grille can be replaced separately, without replacing the entire large motor assembly, which is more cost-effective.
‌Motor integrated damage: Many models (such as Cadillac) have the motor integrated in the grille assembly, and it is not provided separately. It is necessary to replace the entire air intake grille assembly.
‌Remember to perform initialization: After replacing the new grille or motor, use the computer to perform initialization matching. Otherwise, the fault may continue to occur.‌
Risk Warning:
Grille always open: When the engine is cold, the water temperature rises slowly, and in winter, the heating effect is poor and the fuel consumption is high.
Grille always closed: Poor heat dissipation, high water temperature, and in severe cases, the engine will alarm or even seize, and it needs to be dealt with as soon as possible.‌
If the grille fault is reported after driving through water or in rainy weather, prioritize checking if the lower grille motor and blades are stuck. In most cases, replacing the lower grille can solve the problem, and it is not necessary to blindly replace the entire assembly.‌
Before handling it yourself, confirm if it is within the warranty period. If it is within the warranty period, it is recommended to directly go to the 4S store for inspection to avoid affecting the warranty.‌
