Car front bumper - Body function
The core function of the car's front bumper is to absorb and mitigate the impact force of a collision, protecting the vehicle body and the occupants inside. It also takes into account pedestrian protection, aesthetics, and aerodynamic performance.
Safety protection functions:
- Absorbing collision energy: During low-speed collisions, the plastic shell deforms, and the internal foam buffer layer and metal crossbars jointly collapse to absorb approximately 80% of the impact force, protecting components such as the lamp fixtures, radiator, and water tank in the engine compartment.
- Distributing impact loads: The impact force is transmitted through the bumper to the energy-absorbing boxes on both sides, which then spread to the left and right front longitudinal beams and the vehicle structure, reducing the impact on the passenger compartment.
- Pedestrian protection: The plastic material and buffer foam can reduce the injury to pedestrians' legs. Some high-end models also feature engine sinking technology or an active engine hood lift, further protecting pedestrians' heads.
Structural and functional integration:
- Structural composition: Modern front bumpers are typically composed of plastic outer panels, buffer foam, and metal crossbars (crumple bars). The crossbars are bolted to the longitudinal beams of the vehicle frame, facilitating disassembly and maintenance.
- Integrated functions: The bumper often houses millimeter-wave radars, cameras, license plate brackets, and fog lights, providing data support for adaptive cruise control and automatic braking.
- Aerodynamics: The streamlined design reduces wind resistance, and the lower part of the front bumper also provides an intake channel for the cooling system.
Aesthetics and Practicality
The bumper is an important part of the "front face" of a car, reflecting the brand's design style. Elements such as the double-rim grille of BMW and the large grille of Audi, which are characteristic features, are all concentrated in the bumper area. During daily use, it is recommended to check the bumper fixing clips once every six months to prevent them from falling off during high-speed driving; the corners of the bumper are the most prone to scratches, and additional corner sealant can be installed to reduce the risk of damage.
Replacing only the outer shell (i.e., the bumper outer skin/plastic covering) is feasible in many cases, especially when the shell is cracked or severely scratched but the internal structure is not damaged. This practice is quite common and the cost is relatively controllable.
Conditions for replacing only the outer shell:
The external plastic shell of the bumper is only damaged, while the internal anti-collision beam, energy absorption box, and brackets are intact.
The clips and fixing positions have no large-scale fractures, and the shell can be installed normally.
The radar, camera, etc. sensors have not been damaged or can be disassembled and moved without damage.
Conditions not recommended for replacing only the outer shell:
Internal brackets, hangers, or fixing codes are broken, and replacing the shell will not be secure, posing a risk of detachment.
Cracks exceed 20 centimeters or extensive deformation indicate that the impact force has reached the internal structure.
The bumper is deeply integrated with fog lights, grilles, radars, etc., and local damage requires replacing the entire assembly.
For electric vehicles, the bumper is densely populated with radar, camera, etc. components, and disassembly and assembly require careful assessment.
Suggestion:
First, find a reliable technician to disassemble and inspect the internal structure. Confirm that the brackets, clips, and sensors are intact before deciding whether to replace only the outer shell. New cars or those within 3 years of purchase are recommended to use original factory parts. For older vehicles over 5 years old with minor damage, consider aftermarket parts or repair, but do not compromise on safety by using goods from roadside stalls. Safety should always come first.
