Automobile fuel evaporation emissions - What is the nylon pipe assembly?
Automobile fuel evaporation emissions - Nylon tube components, simply put, are the tube components made of nylon material used in the fuel evaporation emissions (EVAP) system. They are responsible for transporting the evaporated gasoline vapor from the fuel tank to the activated carbon tank for adsorption and storage, and then introducing it into the engine for combustion, preventing the direct emission of hydrocarbons into the atmosphere.
What does it do in the system?
The workflow of the fuel evaporation emissions system is as follows: The gasoline in the fuel tank continuously evaporates, and these vapors pass through the pipeline and enter the activated carbon tank equipped with activated carbon for adsorption and storage; when the engine is running, the vapor in the carbon tank is then drawn into the intake manifold through the pipeline and participates in combustion. The nylon tube components undertake the task of transporting the vapor in these steps, including the pipelines and joints connecting the fuel tank, the carbon tank, and the intake side of the engine.
Why nylon material?
Nylon tubes are widely used in automotive pipelines, mainly due to these advantages:
Good resistance to fuel corrosion: Long-term contact with gasoline or diesel does not cause expansion, softening or cracking.
High heat resistance: The engine compartment has high temperatures, and nylon can stably withstand high-temperature working conditions. Long carbon chain nylon can even meet the usage requirements above 130°C.
Light weight: Compared to traditional rubber tubes, it can reduce the weight by more than 50%, contributing to the lightweighting of the entire vehicle.
Good barrier performance: It can effectively prevent the leakage of fuel vapor, meeting the strict requirements of the sixth emission standard for fuel evaporation emissions.
Common materials include PA12, PA612, PA1012 and other long-chain nylon. Some multi-layer tubes may also add an EVOH barrier layer to further enhance the anti-leakage ability.
Actual application and current situation
Currently, nylon tubes are used in both traditional fuel vehicles and plug-in hybrid models for the fuel evaporation emissions system, and it has become a mature mainstream solution. There are also enterprises in China that specialize in producing such tube assemblies, such as Suolian Co., Ltd., which covers a full range of nylon tube products for fuel pipelines and evaporation emissions pipelines.
The nylon tube components in the automobile fuel evaporation emissions system play a core role as the gas transmission channels, transporting the evaporated gasoline vapor from the fuel tank to the activated carbon tank for adsorption and storage, and then introducing it into the intake manifold for combustion when the engine is running, preventing the direct emission of hydrocarbons into the atmosphere.
The fuel evaporation emissions system (EVAP) is a closed-loop device to prevent fuel vapor leakage, and the nylon tube is the "blood vessels" of this system, responsible for transporting the vapor between the fuel tank, activated carbon tank, carbon tank solenoid valve and intake manifold as required. The reason for choosing nylon material is mainly due to its characteristics of being resistant to corrosion, high pressure, lightweight, and not prone to cracking or deformation in a working environment that comes into contact with fuel vapor.
The specific workflow in the system:
When parking/ refueling: The gasoline vapor in the fuel tank passes through the nylon tube into the activated carbon tank, where it is adsorbed and stored by the activated carbon, preventing direct emission into the atmosphere.
When the engine is running: The ECU controls the activation of the carbon tank solenoid valve according to the working conditions, using the vacuum in the intake manifold to draw the vapor stored in the carbon tank through the nylon tube into the intake manifold and into the cylinder for combustion.
Pressure balance and monitoring: The system also maintains the stability of the fuel tank pressure through the pipeline and enables the ECU to monitor whether there are any blockages or leaks in the system.
This can be understood as: The nylon tube is the gas channel connecting the various components, it does not adsorb the vapor itself, but its sealing and corrosion resistance directly determine whether the entire EVAP system can work effectively and without leakage.
Why nylon material
Compared to rubber or metal tubes, nylon tubes have several prominent advantages in the fuel evaporation system:
Resistance to fuel corrosion: Long-term contact with gasoline vapor does not cause swelling or aging.
Lightweight: The tube wall is thin and the weight is light, contributing to the weight reduction of the entire vehicle.
Wide temperature range: The normal operating temperature is approximately -40℃ to 105℃, and it can withstand higher temperatures for a short period.
Flexible and easy to arrange: It is convenient to bend the wiring in the engine compartment, and the installation efficiency is high.
