The function of the front brake disc of the car

The front brake disc is the core component of the front wheel braking system. Its main function is to generate braking force through friction during braking, converting the vehicle's kinetic energy into heat energy, and causing the front wheels to decelerate or stop. Because the center of gravity shifts forward during braking, the front wheels have to bear approximately 70% of the braking force, so the load and working intensity of the front brake disc are much greater than those of the rear wheel.

Why are the front brake discs more "tired"?
Brake force distribution: During braking, inertia causes the front wheels to sink, and they bear approximately 70% of the braking force, while the rear wheels only account for about 30%. Therefore, the wear and heat generation of the front disc are more severe than those of the rear disc.
Heat dissipation structure: Most family cars use ventilated discs (with internal air ducts, relying on air convection for cooling), while rear wheels use solid discs. This is to cope with the higher temperatures of the front disc and avoid heat attenuation leading to softer braking.
Size and material: The front brake disc is usually 30% - 50% larger in diameter and 5 - 10 mm thicker than the rear disc. The material is also more resistant to high temperatures to match the higher working intensity.
?? How it works
After stepping on the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure pushes the pistons in the caliper, causing the two brake pads to clamp the brake disc, generating frictional force to slow down the wheels. This friction process generates a large amount of heat, so the heat dissipation performance directly determines the stability of the brakes.
Daily precautions
Faster wear: The lifespan of the front disc is usually shorter than that of the rear disc. Generally, the recommended replacement cycle is 6 - 80,000 kilometers, but in heavy traffic and frequent braking, it will be significantly shortened. It is necessary to judge based on actual wear.
Replacement signal: Check the thickness, grooves, and abnormal sounds. For example, when braking, there is a harsh metallic sound, the brakes become softer, or the braking distance increases, it is time to go to the shop for inspection.
Disc plate linkage: When the front brake disc has obvious grooves, even if the brake pads still have some remaining space, it is recommended to replace the pair of discs. Otherwise, the reduced friction surface will reduce the braking force.
Front brake disc failure: Don't rush to replace it. Handle it in a graded manner: "light grinding - moderate replacement - severe replacement of the entire set". Common signals are steering wheel shaking during braking, a harsh metallic sound when braking, a deep groove or obvious step on the disc surface, or a longer braking distance. These all point to wear or deformation of the brake disc.
There is no fixed replacement mileage for brake discs. The core is to look at three hard indicators:
Check the thickness: The new disc thickness is generally 20 - 22 mm. When it is worn down to 17 - 18 mm or lower than the original factory-labeled minimum limit, it is time to replace; the depth of the disc surface grooves exceeding 1.5 - 2 mm also requires replacement.
Listen to abnormal sounds: If there is a sharp metallic friction sound when braking continuously, it indicates that the brake pads have reached the limit and the disc surface may have grooves, requiring a joint inspection of the brake pads and the guide pin.
Feel shaking: If the steering wheel or the vehicle body shakes significantly during braking, it is mostly disc surface deformation. In this case, grinding often cannot restore it, and replacing the new disc is more reliable.
Treatment plan
Light wear: If there are only shallow scratches on the disc surface (depth not exceeding 1.5 - 2 mm), you can find a professional shop to smooth it out and replace a set of new brake pads. After 200 - 300 kilometers of normal driving after the repair and wear-in, it can be used normally.
Moderate wear: If there are obvious grooves or steps on the disc surface, it is recommended to replace the entire set of discs and replace the brake pads and guide pins together to avoid the new pads being further damaged by the old disc.
Severe wear: If the disc thickness is insufficient, there are cracks, or the grooves are very deep, don't hesitate. Replace the front and rear axle brake discs as a set, and also check the ABS sensor and brake fluid.
A common misconception: Abnormal wear of brake pads and single-sided heating of the disc surface. In many cases, it is not a problem of driving habits, but a "drag brake" caused by a rusted guide pin or poor return of the return pin. When repairing, do not just replace the pads, but check if the guide pin is smooth, if the dust cover is damaged, and apply a silicone-based lubricating grease resistant to high temperatures. Ordinary yellow grease will corrode the rubber cover and recur after a few months.
