What is the spiral spring shock absorber pad at the rear of the car?

The rear suspension spring shock absorber pad is, simply put, a high elasticity rubber piece installed at the ends of the rear wheel spring or between the spring coils. Its main functions are to buffer and dampen vibrations, reduce metal collision noises, and provide certain protection for the shock absorber. It has several common names: shock absorber pad, shock absorber block, damping rubber pad, spring pad, limit block, etc. The formal name is generally "automobile spring shock absorber pad".

What does it do?
- Buffer and absorb shock: When passing over potholes, speed bumps, or when the vehicle is heavily loaded and compressed, the spring undergoes intense deformation. The shock absorber pad uses its own elasticity to absorb the impact energy, preventing the spring and the metal parts from directly colliding.
- Reduce noise: It isolates the friction between the spring coil and the metal base, eliminating noises such as "clunking" when crossing obstacles.
- Protect the suspension: It delays spring fatigue, reduces the burden on the shock absorber, and extends the lifespan of the suspension components.

There is a point that is easily confused:
- The original factory-installed and those added later are two different things:
- Original factory shock absorber blocks/limit blocks: Installed inside the shock absorber or on the spring seat, they do not come into contact with the spring during normal operation and only intervene when the spring is compressed to the limit (such as when crossing a large pothole).
- The added shock absorber pad: Placed directly between the spring coils, it effectively occupies the compression space of the spring and changes the original factory-tuned suspension characteristics.

If your car is original, this component is included and it is a normal wear and tear part. It can be replaced when it ages and cracks, for example, some BMW owners reported that after replacing it, the chassis noise improved significantly.

However, if you want to add a third-party shock absorber pad, it is not recommended for most cars in good condition - in the short term, it may feel "harder" and "stiffer", and in the long term, it is likely to interfere with the shock absorber stroke and change the vehicle's center of gravity, and even there is a risk of insurance denial. It is more suitable for temporary relief for old cars with weak springs, but in such cases, replacing the spring might be a more thorough solution.

The rear suspension spring shock absorber pad (also called shock absorber pad, damping rubber pad) mainly has three functions: buffering road impact, protecting the shock absorber and the spring, and alleviating the weakness of the spring. Specifically:
- Buffer and absorb shock: When the vehicle passes over potholes or speed bumps, the spring is severely compressed. The shock absorber pad uses its own elasticity to deform and absorb the impact energy, preventing metal parts from colliding directly, reducing the jolt and "clunking" noise.
- Protect the suspension: It can limit the excessive compression of the spring, preventing the shock absorber piston rod from "bottoming out" and hitting the limit block, thereby reducing the damage to the shock absorber seal and extending the lifespan of the suspension.
- Assist in support: For old cars with weak springs, it can temporarily raise the vehicle height by about 0.2-0.3 centimeters, alleviating the "sagging" phenomenon and reducing the side roll during cornering.

However, note that it is not a universal solution:
- New cars or sport-tuned vehicles are not recommended to install it: It will shorten the effective stroke of the spring by about 20%, making the suspension harder and more bouncy, and instead damaging the original factory tuning.
- There may be side effects in the long term: Some car owners have reported oil leakage in the shock absorber and abnormal deformation of the spring after using it for a long time, even an increase in braking distance.
- It is only suitable for specific scenarios: Old cars with obviously weak springs, those frequently carrying heavy loads or traveling on rough roads can consider it; for cars in good condition, adding it has almost no effect and the disadvantages outweigh the benefits.
