Product knowledge

What is the spacer under the rear coil spring of the car?

The lower gasket of the rear coil spring is the pad installed between the rear coil spring and the lower control arm (or spring tray). It is commonly known as "lower support buffer pad" or "lower coil spring pad". Its functions include:
- Shock absorption and vibration reduction: Absorbing high-frequency vibrations from the road surface and reducing hard collisions and noise between metal parts.
- Preventing direct metal friction: Avoiding the direct contact of the spring end ring with the metal seat surface, preventing abnormal noises and wear.
- Compensating for installation tolerances: Making the spring more evenly loaded and preventing the spring from becoming unstable.
- Supporting and positioning: For some models, the lower gasket is made slightly harder, serving as a support and positioning for the spring.

In simple terms, it is a "soft cushion" between the spring and the vehicle body/handling arm, used for buffering and reducing friction.
If this gasket becomes aged, cracked, or deformed, it may cause phenomena such as "clunking" sounds when crossing bumps, rebound dispersion when decelerating, and slight shaking of the steering wheel.
Some models (such as those with a torsion beam rear axle) may install a plastic protective cover below the spring tray to protect the tray from being hit by mud, stones, etc. This is a separate component from the gasket.
The lower gasket of the rear coil spring (also known as the spring seat pad, buffer rubber pad, or lower support pad) mainly serves the functions of shock absorption and vibration reduction, noise reduction, support and positioning, and preventing direct metal friction. It can also compensate for the slight height drop of the aging spring.
Specifically, its functions can be broken down into the following points:
- Buffer and attenuate vibrations: Located between the spring and the vehicle body/underbody arm, absorbing the high-frequency vibrations and repeated bouncing after road impact, making the crossing of bumps and speed bumps more smooth, and improving comfort.
- Isolate metal collisions and abnormal noises: Preventing the spring end ring from directly rubbing against the metal seat surface, eliminating "clunking" or "thumping" sounds from metal impacts, and making the chassis feel more stable.
- Support positioning and compensate for tolerances: Supporting the spring end ring, compensating for installation tolerances; for worn-out springs that have been in use for a long time, it can provide some support, usually raising the vehicle by about 0.2 - 0.3 centimeters, but it will not change the stiffness of the spring itself.
- Protect the suspension system: Reducing additional wear on the spring and shock absorber, delaying oil seal leakage and other problems, and extending the lifespan of the suspension components.
It should be noted that this gasket is a consumable part. Rubber will age, crack, and deform over time. Once it is damaged, it is prone to symptoms such as "clunking" sounds when crossing bumps, rebound dispersion, and slight shaking of the steering wheel. It is recommended to check regularly and replace it when it is old.
When the lower gasket of the rear coil spring (also called the rear shock absorber lower rubber pad) ages or is damaged, the most obvious feeling is that when crossing bumpy roads or speed bumps, the rear will transmit "clunking" sounds, and the chassis feels loose, with a significant decrease in comfort.
What are the consequences of the fault?
- Obvious abnormal sounds: When driving on uneven roads, the rear suspension will emit "clucking" or "clunking" sounds, especially more clearly from the rear.
- Reduced comfort: When the gasket loses elasticity, the shock absorption effect decreases, the body's bouncing sensation becomes stronger, and when crossing bumps, it feels that the chassis is "loose".
- Unstable vehicle: When the aging is severe, the vehicle will shake or tilt more noticeably during sharp turns or braking, affecting the handling.
- Associated wear: When the gasket fails, the spring and shock absorber will directly collide, accelerating the wear of other suspension components over time.
How to determine if it is a problem with the gasket?
- Press the vehicle body: Press the rear of the vehicle forcefully and then release. If the vehicle body shakes with a large amplitude repeatedly, or accompanied by abnormal sounds, it may indicate problems with the shock absorber or spring system.
- Check the gasket condition: Raise the vehicle and check if the rubber pad has cracks, hardened, damaged, or has fallen off; if it is only slightly worn, it can be observed again, but if there is obvious aging or damage, it is recommended to replace it.
Distinguishing the source of the abnormal noise: If the abnormal noise is concentrated in the rear seats and is most obvious when passing over speed bumps, and the shock absorber does not leak oil, it is likely that the upper and lower gaskets of the spring have aged rather than the shock absorber itself being damaged.
Maintenance suggestions:
Prioritize replacing original or original-matched parts: Third-party parts may have insufficient density and anti-aging capabilities, and they may cause problems again soon.
Check the fixing screws: When replacing the gaskets, also check if the spring seat and fixing screws are rusted. If there is rust or thread slippage, replace them together to avoid loosening in the future.
Wait until the vehicle is on the ground and the body is level before tightening the screws: The screws at the rubber sleeve position must be tightened after the wheels are completely on the ground and the vehicle body is level. Tightening them while the vehicle is lifted will cause the rubber sleeve to be under long-term stress and potentially age and crack prematurely.
Cost reference: The gaskets themselves are not expensive. The accessories range from several tens to several hundred yuan. The main cost is the labor fee; doing it yourself will take about 1.5 to 2 hours, and you will need a jack, a 19mm socket, and other tools.
If the gasket is only slightly worn and there is no obvious abnormal noise, you can observe it for now; but once it is damaged, has abnormal noise, or the body shakes noticeably, it is recommended to replace it as soon as possible. Don't delay too long, otherwise it may affect driving safety.
