What are the components on the top of the car?
"The automotive roof components" is not a single item but a collective term for all the structural and functional parts in the roof area. It can be divided into three categories: body structure components, internal covering parts, and external functional parts.
Body structure components: Mainly include the roof panel, roof cover, roof beam, roof edge beam, etc. They are the "framework" that ensures the roof's strength and protect the occupants during rollovers.
Internal covering parts (automobile roof): Covering the interior of the roof, they serve functions such as decoration, sound insulation, and heat insulation. Common materials include fabric, PVC, and fiberglass. Many cars also integrate them with sunroofs and reading lights.
External functional parts: Equipment installed on the outside of the roof, such as roof luggage racks, roof luggage compartments, antennas (nowadays, the common type is shark fin antennas), etc., to expand storage or receive signals.
In addition, the sunroof itself also belongs to the roof components. Nowadays, many cars integrate solar panels and starry sky atmosphere lights into the roof.
If you want to install a roof luggage rack, be aware that for small passenger cars, after compliant installation, you need to apply for a change registration with the vehicle management office within 30 days. For sedans, unauthorized installation may involve illegal modification.
The components of the automotive roof actually fall into several categories, and their purposes vary greatly. The most common "shark fin" is mainly a signal antenna, while the structural components of the roof itself are responsible for safety and support.
The core functions can be viewed from the following aspects:
Shark fin antenna
Signal Reception: This is its core function. It integrates multiple antennas internally, responsible for receiving GPS navigation, cellular networks (4G/5G), satellite broadcasts, and in-vehicle WiFi signals.
Discharge Static Electricity: Utilizing the characteristic of "electrons flowing to the tip", it conducts the accumulated static electricity on the vehicle body to the tip of the antenna and releases it, reducing the risk of being electrocuted when opening and closing the doors.
Reduce Wind Resistance and Noise: The streamlined design allows air to flow smoothly through, compared to the old-fashioned long antennas, it can reduce air resistance and noise during high-speed driving.
Roof Structural Components
Roof Covering Beam: A horizontal metal beam hidden beneath the interior panel of the roof, responsible for supporting the roof structure, protecting the passenger compartment in case of rollovers or impacts, and enhancing the vehicle's rigidity.
Roof Longitudinal Beam: Longitudinal beams on both sides of the roof, mainly serving to strengthen the roof structure, improve the vehicle's rigidity and torsional strength, and distribute pressure throughout the vehicle.
Sealing Rubber Strip: Black rubber strips on both sides of the roof, used for sealing to prevent rain and dust from entering the vehicle.
Roof Interior (Ceiling)
Soundproof and Insulation: The covering components inside the roof, mainly serving the functions of decoration, soundproofing, and insulation, enhancing the riding comfort.
In addition, the roof can be equipped with luggage racks to expand storage space, but unauthorized installation of such items may involve illegal modifications. Legal installation requires applying for a change registration at the vehicle management office within 30 days.
The faults of the vehicle's roof components are quite extensive. Common issues include roof detachment, abnormal sounds, and water leakage. First, determine exactly which one it is, and then deal with it accordingly. Most cases do not require going to a repair shop immediately.
Common Faults and Their Solutions
Ceiling detachment (velvet falling down): This is mostly caused by the aging of the sponge in the skylight or ceiling fabric, and the failure of the glue. Sun exposure will accelerate the aging process. The edges that have peeled off can be bonded with special car glue; for the middle part that has collapsed or a large area of detachment, it is recommended to go to a repair shop to re-cover the ceiling fabric.
Roof abnormal noise (creaking sound): Start by checking the external decorative parts such as the roof storage box, sunshade, and handles. Then check the sealing strip and the skylight guide rail. The sealing strip that has aged and become hard can be treated with rubber maintenance agent; if the skylight guide rail is lacking lubricating oil, clean it and apply the special lubricating grease; if the internal clasps are loose, insert sponge or sound insulation cotton.
Roof water leakage: Most likely, the drainage holes of the skylight are blocked, or the sealing rubber strip has aged and cracked. Regularly use fine iron wire to clear the drainage holes, check the condition of the sealing strip, and do not use high-pressure water guns to directly spray the sealing strip when washing the car. If it leaks after installing a luggage rack or luggage frame, pay special attention to whether the waterproof glue at the installation holes has failed.
If a luggage rack or luggage frame has been installed
If you have recently installed a roof luggage rack or luggage frame, the fault may be related to the installation method. Installing with the original reserved holes or expansion blocks basically does not damage the sealing strip; using clamp-type brackets or drilling holes for installation increases the risk significantly, as it is prone to compression and deformation, leading to water leakage. Check if the screws are tightened and if the sealing strip has been deformed by pressure. The leakage point may not be the rubber strip, but it could also be that the waterproofing at the screw holes is not done properly.
If the rubber strip has aged and cracked or the installation holes have water ingress, it is recommended to first remove the luggage rack, replace the sealing strip and reapply the sheet metal glue for sealing, and then reinstall it; if you are not handy, it is safer to find a professional modification shop to do the work.
What to do if you can't figure out the problem
If you have checked and still can't find the cause, or if the ceiling has detached in a large area or the structure is damaged, don't force it. Go to a 4S store or professional repair shop for handling, and do a waterproof test after the repair.
