What is an automotive coil spring?
An automotive coil spring is a spiral-shaped elastic element made by winding spring steel wires. It is mainly installed in the suspension system to support the vehicle body and absorb road vibrations.
What does it do?
Supporting weight: Most of the vehicle's weight is borne by it.
Shock absorption and buffering: When the wheels roll over potholes, the spring deforms to absorb impact energy, reducing the jarring sensation transmitted to the vehicle.
Working in conjunction with shock absorbers: The spring itself does not consume energy; it only stores and releases it. Used alone, it would bounce up and down like a trampoline, so it must be used in conjunction with shock absorbers to truly eliminate vibrations.
Common positions on the vehicle
Independent suspension: The mainstream configuration for front and rear wheels of modern passenger cars. Both wheels can move independently, not affecting each other, improving stability and comfort.
Other parts: Car seats, motorcycle seat cushions, etc. are also commonly used for shock absorption and support.
Main features
Simple structure, easy manufacturing, high energy utilization rate - these are the reasons why it is widely used.
Based on force, there are three types: compression, tension, and torsion; based on shape, there are cylindrical, conical, and helical shapes, and cylindrical shape is the most widely used.
Performance can be changed by adjusting parameters such as wire diameter and coil count to adapt to different vehicle models.
If the spring becomes worn or breaks, it will affect the vehicle height and shock absorption effect, and it is necessary to check and replace it in time.
By the way, there is another component on the vehicle called "airbag spring" or "clock spring", which is not a suspension spring but a part in the steering wheel responsible for the electrical connection of the airbag and the horn. Don't confuse them.
The core function of the automotive coil spring is to support the vehicle body and absorb road shocks, and to work in conjunction with shock absorbers to make driving more smooth and comfortable.
In simple terms, it has the following functions:
Supporting the vehicle body: The coil spring is the main load-bearing component in the suspension system, supporting the vehicle body and ensuring a normal ground clearance.
Shock absorption and buffering: When passing over speed bumps or rough roads, the spring compresses and rebounds to absorb part of the road's bumps and shocks, rather than transmitting them directly to the vehicle body.
Ensuring stable control: The supporting characteristics of the spring also directly affect the cornering posture and tire grip, being one of the bases of vehicle handling.
How to work with shock absorbers
Just having a spring is not enough; it tends to shake back and forth. The function of the shock absorber is to quickly hold the spring and "press down" the excessive shaking, otherwise the vehicle would bounce up and down like a boat.
Common application positions
Suspension system: This is the main place. In independent suspensions such as McPherson and multi-link systems, basic coil springs are used, and they are the absolute mainstream configuration for passenger cars.
Clutch: There are also coil springs in clutch plates, used to absorb fluctuations in engine power output, making the power transmission smoother.
Other parts: Car seats, motorcycle seat cushions, etc. are also used, providing basic shock absorption and support.
When the automotive coil spring is broken, the most obvious manifestations are: significant vehicle sinking, increased shaking during driving, abnormal noise on bumpy sections. It is necessary to repair and replace it as soon as possible.
First, determine if it is a broken spring
Abnormal vehicle posture: The vehicle is significantly sinking or getting lower, or one side is higher than the other, with a larger residual vibration when stopped.
Poor driving quality: When passing over bumps or speed bumps, there is a "clunking" or "creaking" sound, strong shaking sensation, and significant increase in side-slip during cornering.
Abnormal tire wear: Failure of the spring will cause incorrect wheel alignment, single-sided or inner-side wear, or even the tires wearing out to the point of not showing the tread pattern.
If the spring breaks, it is a problem affecting driving safety, especially on highways or curves, which may cause the vehicle to lose control. If it is confirmed or suspected to be a broken spring, it should be sent for repair immediately, and do not continue long-distance driving.
How to handle it
Must be replaced in pairs: Replacing only one side will cause inconsistency in height and support on both sides, affecting balance and control. Both sides should be replaced together.
Change through official channels: It is recommended to go to a 4S store or a professional auto repair shop and use genuine manufacturer parts. Don't be tempted to buy inferior products at low prices; otherwise, it will affect safety and lifespan.
After replacement, perform four-wheel alignment: Replacing the springs will change the suspension geometry. After replacement, perform a four-wheel alignment to avoid deviation and uneven tire wear.
Also check the shock absorbers: Springs and shock absorbers are two separate components. They are not usually replaced together; however, fatigue of the springs often increases the burden on the shock absorbers. If you find oil leakage from the shock absorbers, it is recommended to address it together.
