What are the components of the rear torsion beam of the car?

The rear suspension of a car, also known as the torsion beam suspension, consists of two main components: the "beam structure" and the "damping support". Specifically:
‌Torsion beam (crossbeam): A flexible beam connecting the left and right wheels, it is the main load-bearing component. It can allow the left and right wheels to move independently slightly through its own torsional deformation, and also serves as a lateral stabilizer.
‌Long arm (longitudinal arm): Welded to both sides of the torsion beam, the front end is connected to the body through a bushing, and the rear end connects the wheel. It is responsible for transmitting longitudinal forces and positioning.
‌Spring tray: Welded to the long arm, it is used to support the coil spring and increase the stiffness between the wheel and the beam.
‌Coil spring: An elastic element that supports the weight of the vehicle, buffering road impacts.
‌Shock absorber (dampener): Reduces the excessive bouncing of the spring, allowing the vehicle to stabilize quickly.
‌Elastic bushing (connection bracket): Placed at the front end of the long arm and connected to the body, it buffers vibrations and withstands lateral and longitudinal forces, being an important adjustment point.
It should be noted that the specific structure of different models may vary. For example, some may add a Watt connecting rod to improve handling, while others use an aluminum crossbeam to reduce weight.
The core function of the rear torsion beam assembly is to connect the left and right wheels and balance the wobbling on both sides, thus maintaining the stability of the vehicle body, and also acting as a lateral stabilizer to increase the side-slip stiffness.
In simple terms, it is a single crossbeam that connects the non-independent suspension wheels on both sides. When one wheel wobbles, the crossbeam will undergo a flexible deformation, reducing interference with the other wheel, making the vehicle run more smoothly and reducing side-slip during cornering.
Its main characteristics can be viewed as follows:
Structure and working principle
‌Shape like "H"‌: The middle crossbeam connects the left and right trailing arms, and the front end of the trailing arm is connected to the body, forming an H shape as a whole.
‌Half-independent suspension‌: Structurally, it belongs to half-independent suspension, between independent and non-independent, coordinating the wheels on both sides through the torsion of the crossbeam.
Main advantages
‌Simple structure, low cost‌: Low manufacturing cost and easy maintenance, so it is often used in small cars and compact cars.
‌Convenient space utilization‌: Occupies less underbody space, can lower the chassis height, thus providing more rear passenger space.
‌Lightweight‌: The unsprung mass is low, which is conducive to the suspension response.
‌Built-in anti-roll bar effect‌: The torsional stiffness of the crossbeam itself can act as a lateral stabilizer, improving the side-slip stability.
‌Good comfort performance‌: Fixed to the chassis through rubber sleeves, it can provide a buffering effect; during small bumps, it has little impact on the other wheel.‌
Points to note about the shortcomings:
‌The wheels on both sides will interfere with each other‌: During intense steering, a "lifting foot" situation may occur, and the positioning angle cannot be adjusted, resulting in poorer handling than a well-tuned independent suspension.
‌Limited comfort performance‌: Generally, the smoothness and comfort are moderate, and if the adjustment is not done properly, the experience will be significantly inferior to that of an independent suspension.‌
The most common faults of the rear torsion beam assembly occur in the following positions: rubber sleeve aging and cracking, longitudinal arm deformation or fracture, and shock absorber leakage and failure. Many faults accumulate gradually, not suddenly breaking down.‌
First, clarify which situation you are in, and then decide how to handle it:
Common fault types
‌Rubber sleeve aging and cracking‌: The torsion beam is connected to the body through a rubber sleeve. Over time, the rubber hardens and cracks, causing the vehicle body to shake and making it "creak" when passing over speed bumps. This is a normal aging process, and replacing the rubber sleeve alone can solve the problem, with a low cost.
‌Longitudinal arm deformation or fracture‌: This is the most dangerous fault. If the longitudinal arm develops fatigue cracks, in extreme cases, it will directly fracture, causing the vehicle to suddenly veer off course or lose control during driving. Once cracks or obvious deformation of the longitudinal arm are detected, it must be stopped immediately for maintenance, and the vehicle should not be driven further.
Shock absorber oil leakage failure: After the shock absorber leaks oil, the damping decreases, and the body's bouncing sensation becomes significantly worse. When driving over uneven roads, there will be a "thumping" sound. If pressing on one side of the body causes it to rebound more than three times, it is basically considered to be failed.
Alignment parameters deviation: The torsion beam itself cannot adjust the inclination or beam angle. If the four-wheel alignment data cannot be restored even after repeated adjustments, it is usually because the torsion beam itself has deformed. At this time, replacement is the only option.
How to diagnose and handle
Mild problem: The rubber sleeve is cracked, and the shock absorber leaks oil slightly. Simply replace the corresponding component and do not need to replace the entire torsion beam.
Moderate problem: There is an abnormal noise during driving or the vehicle veers off course. First, lift the vehicle to check the gap of the rubber sleeve and the condition of the shock absorber. Confirm which component is the problem and then replace it specifically.
Severe problem: There are cracks in the longitudinal arm, the torsion beam itself is deformed, and the four-wheel alignment data cannot be restored. The entire torsion beam assembly must be replaced. Sheet metal repair cannot restore the original strength, and forced repair will leave serious safety hazards.
If the vehicle shows obvious veering during driving, there is a metallic impact sound from the chassis, or the body shakes more severely at high speeds, immediately slow down and pull over to the side of the road for inspection. Do not continue driving. There have been cases in history where fatigue fractures of the torsion beam longitudinal arm caused the vehicle to lose control during driving.
