What is an automotive elastic torsion bar?
The elastic torsion bar in automobiles usually refers to the torsion spring, which is an elastic component in the car suspension. It uses its own torsional deformation to absorb and buffer road impacts.
Its working principle can be simply understood as "twisting a towel": a steel rod made of spring steel, one end is fixed to the frame, and the other end is connected to the suspension arm and the wheel. When the wheel moves up and down, it will cause this rod to twist, and the elasticity of the rod absorbs the vibration energy, and the wheel releases the energy and resets after passing over an obstacle.
Main features
Compact structure: It occupies little space and is easy to arrange, especially suitable for front-wheel drive vehicles and those with limited space.
High energy storage per unit mass: It can store more elastic energy with the same weight, helping to reduce the vehicle weight.
Basic maintenance-free: Daily use does not require lubrication, and the reliability is high.
Adjustable vehicle height: By adjusting the installation angle of the fixed end, the vehicle height can be adjusted.
It should be noted that it is not the same as the "lateral stabilizer bar".
Although the lateral stabilizer bar is essentially also a torsion spring, in automobiles, it usually has its own specific functions:
Torsion spring (elastic torsion bar): As the main elastic component of the suspension, it replaces coil springs or leaf springs and is responsible for absorbing road impacts.
Lateral stabilizer bar: It is an auxiliary elastic component, placed horizontally and specifically used to reduce during turns, improving handling stability.
The materials and working principles of the two are similar, but their functions are different. The "elastic torsion bar" commonly referred to in daily life mostly refers to the former, that is, the torsion spring.
In addition, the torsion spring is also widely used in tracked armored vehicles such as tanks. Modern main battle tanks almost all adopt this suspension form. In the passenger car field, it is more often found in off-road vehicles, light passenger cars, and some sedans.
The core function of the elastic torsion bar (also called torsion spring) is to utilize the torsional elastic deformation of the rod to absorb and buffer the vibration energy brought by road impacts, allowing the wheels to automatically reset after jumping, while maintaining the elastic connection between the vehicle body and the wheels.
The specific functions it plays at different positions can be divided into two categories:
As a suspension elastic component: One end is fixed to the frame, and the other end connects the suspension arm or balance elbow. When the wheel jumps, it will cause the torsion bar to twist, generating elastic force to absorb the vibration, providing a similar shock absorption effect as a coil spring, and is often used in car, off-road vehicles, and tracked vehicles such as tanks.
As a lateral stabilizer bar (anti-roll bar): It is placed horizontally and connected to the left and right suspensions on the chassis. During turns, the vehicle body sideslips, and the left and right wheels jump inconsistently. After the rod is twisted, it generates an opposing torque to resist the vehicle from continuing to tilt, thereby improving cornering stability and handling performance.
Main advantages and limitations
Advantages: High energy storage per unit mass, which can reduce the vehicle weight; fixed to the frame, reducing non-sprung mass, resulting in better ride comfort; compact structure, maintenance-free, and can be adjusted to fine-tune the vehicle height and handling characteristics.
Limitations: High manufacturing process and material requirements, and it only performs elastic functions. The suspension must be equipped with a guiding mechanism to transmit force and control the wheel movement trajectory.
Note: The torsion spring is only an elastic component of the suspension. It does not attenuate vibrations itself; shock absorption is achieved by shock absorbers; at the same time, the surface coating is prone to corrosion once damaged, affecting the lifespan. Daily care should avoid bumps, scratches, and impacts.
