The function of the car headlight assembly
The core function of the automotive headlamp assembly is to provide illumination for night or low-visibility driving, ensuring driving safety. It is composed of components such as the lamp housing, lamp cover, light source (halogen, xenon or LED), reflector bowl/ lens, and adjustment mechanism, and it has the functions of lighting, signal indication, and active safety.
Main function
Road lighting: The near light is responsible for illuminating the road surface within 40-60 meters in front of the vehicle. The far light has a coverage range of over 100 meters and is used when driving at high speed.
Width indicator warning: The width indicator lights use amber/red lights to indicate the width of the vehicle, preventing collisions and rear-end accidents.
Automatic adjustment: Some headlights have light sensors. When meeting another vehicle, they will automatically switch from far light to near light to avoid glare; they will also adjust the illumination range according to the vehicle speed.
Structure composition
The headlight assembly includes the lamp housing (protection and support), lamp cover (light transmission and wear-resistant), lamp bulb (light source), reflector (reflection), turn signal, fog light, fixed structure and control circuit. The assembly is a fully pre-installed unit that can be replaced directly without disassembling internal parts; non-assemblies require self-assembly and debugging.
When modifying the headlights, be aware that upgrading halogen lamps to LED or laser lights requires considering heat dissipation, circuit matching and compliance with regulations to avoid light type deviation or water ingress and fogging.
Headlight assembly problems: Do not rush to replace when the assembly is faulty. Most cases are problems with the bulb, fuse or circuit contact, which can be solved with a small investment. First, check the specific phenomenon and then deal with it accordingly.
First, determine the type of fault:
Completely off: Check if the fuse is blown and if the bulb is burned out. Also, check if the plug is loose or oxidized.
Dim or yellowish light: Most likely the bulb is aging. Replace the same specification original factory bulb directly.
Flashing or intermittent on/off: Focus on checking for poor contact of the wiring harness plug, corrosion of the grounding terminal, and cleaning and re-plugging firmly.
Fault code reported by the dashboard: If it involves the lighting control module or sensor, use a diagnostic tool to read the code to confirm, do not blindly disassemble.
Troubleshooting sequence for self-manipulation
Turn off the power supply: Turn off the engine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent short circuits.
Check the bulb: Open the headlight cover and observe if the filament is blackened or broken. An appearance that is normal but aging can also affect brightness.
Check the fuse: Locate the corresponding number in the user manual, replace with a new fuse of the same amperage if it is blown; if there is a short circuit, check the wiring.
Check the plug and grounding: Check if the plug at the rear of the assembly is oxidized or loose. Clean with electronic contact agent and re-plug firmly.
If all are normal: It may be a problem with the control module or switch. Go to a repair shop to use professional equipment for testing.
Special attention
Faults after modifying the headlights: For headlights like the Hercules Eye, common problems include water ingress and fogging due to poor sealing, incompatibility of decoding and fault code reporting, and scattered and dazzling light patterns. It is necessary to go back to the construction shop for re-sealing, software matching or recalibration of the lights.
Faults after replacing the assembly: For some models (such as BMW adaptive headlights), after replacing the assembly, programming and coding are required; otherwise, it will report failure. This must be handled by a professional shop.
Can be repaired without replacement: For turn signal faults in Mercedes-Benz models, the 4S store may ask to replace the entire assembly (costing tens of thousands), but replacing the module alone separately for repair can often save a lot of money.
Night driving safety is the top priority. If the problem still cannot be solved after troubleshooting, go to a regular repair shop for a system inspection in time.
