The lower part of the vehicle's side bumper - what is it?
The area below the car's side bumper is usually referred to as the side skirt (side skirt panel), also known as the side guard or lower beam guard plate. It is a protective panel located at the bottom of the car's sides and beneath the doors.
Its main functions are threefold:
- Aerodynamics: Like a air dam, it reduces air flow entering the car's bottom, lowers wind resistance, and makes the car more stable at high speeds.
- Body protection: It blocks road debris, mud, and water splashes, reducing chassis corrosion and scratches.
- Decorative aesthetics: It makes the side lines of the car more smooth and visually lowers the chassis height.
The material is usually ABS engineering plastic, fiberglass, or aluminum. In lower-end models, it may not be standard, but it can be added later.
Note the distinction: The side skirt is mainly an aerodynamic and protective component, while the inner part of the threshold beam is the actual structural component responsible for side impact safety. They are not the same thing.
The component below the car's side bumper is usually called the side skirt panel (also known as the lower beam or side skirt). It is not just a decorative panel and has three practical functions: optimizing aerodynamics, protecting the car's bottom, and assisting in structural strength.
Main functions:
- Optimizing aerodynamics: The side skirt can prevent air from flowing into the car's bottom from the sides at high speeds, reducing turbulence and air resistance, and improving the stability and handling at high speeds. Some models can reduce the drag coefficient by about 0.01-0.03 with it.
- Protecting the car's bottom: It can block road debris, mud, and water splashes from directly impacting the paint and chassis lines beneath the doors, reducing the risk of scratches and rust, and avoiding damage to the chassis critical components from road bumps or shoulders.
- Assisting structural strength: In some models, the side skirt is connected to the chassis longitudinal beam, which can enhance the vehicle's rigidity and improve handling performance; minor scratches can also be absorbed first, reducing damage to the main structural components of the vehicle.
Confusing components:
- Side skirt (below the doors): This is the one mentioned above, mainly responsible for side airflow and protection.
- Lower guard plate/ front lip (below the front bumper): In the area beneath the bumper, it mainly prevents bottoming out, protects the engine oil pan and transmission housing, and helps to guide the chassis airflow.
The material of the side skirt is usually steel plate, engineering plastic, or aluminum. Different materials have differences in impact resistance, lightweight, and repair difficulty. Common wear and tear during daily driving includes being scratched or chipped by curb stones or gravel.
If there is a problem with the lower part of the car's side bumper, first assess the extent of the damage and decide whether to repair or replace. Minor scratches, dents, or small depressions can be repaired; if the dent is large or the fasteners are broken and loose, it will require replacement or reinstallation.
Handling by damage type:
- Minor scratches/scratches: If the paint is not exposed, use scratch repair agent or toothpaste to polish it; if the paint is exposed but the area is small, use a paint pen to dot it, which will not affect use.
- Dents (no damage): Try using a bumper repairer to heat and push out, or use an air suction device to pull it out. Do not apply too much force; if it cannot be resolved, leave it to the shop.
- Cracks: For minor cracks, plastic welding can be used to repair the crack with a plastic welding gun and then polish and paint; if the crack is long or at a stress point, it is recommended to replace it directly.
- Loose/deflected: It is mostly due to aging or deformation of the fasteners, requiring disassembly of the bumper to replace the fasteners and reinstalling them. Do not use glue to patch it up; it is very dangerous if it falls off at high speeds.
Plastic bumpers do not rust like metal; simply letting them lose paint and leaving them alone is fine for a short period. However, if there are obvious cracks, loosening, or detachment risks, it is recommended to handle it at a professional repair shop as soon as possible, do not delay.
Special attention:
- Check fasteners and fixation points: If there is a noticeable widening of the gap or shaking, it may be that the fasteners are broken; only repairing the paint surface is not enough, the fasteners need to be replaced.
- Bumper-equipped models with radar/camera: After repairing the bumper, the sensors need to be recalibrated and calibrated; otherwise, parking assistance may fail.
Don't compare the prices of family cars with those of luxury vehicles: The labor costs for repairing vehicles with integrated sensors will be significantly higher.
If you're not sure, just drive your car to the repair shop and let the technician take a look, then quote a price and make a decision based on the most convenient option.
